Dictionary has many functions, in which the function of definition is of very importance because the main purpose of dictionary is providing the entry’s meaning information for the readers so that the readers can understand and use the entry-word and the realization of the purpose completely depends on lexicographical definition. However, the function of definition is limited, which need the exemplification to assist it. Therefore, the exemplification becomes very important, too. Good exemplification can assist definition, provide grammatical information, and supplement the information usage and so on. Many researches studied the exemplification of dictionary, its principles and so on. Dictionary changed much with the development of technology and many kinds of electronic dictionaries appeared. Few studies are involved with the new-type dictionary. Based on the general principles of the exemplification in a learner’s printed dictionary, it is necessary to construct the general principles about the exemplification in the electronic learner’s dictionary.  相似文献

The symbolist use of Epiphany in Ulyssess is James Joyce’s inheritance and development of Aquinas’ three aesthetic principles --"Wholeness, harmony and radiance". On the one hand, Joyce makes his readers realize the brief experience which, whether it is trivial or momentous, impinged on a person with the light of a sudden revelation of truth about life. On the other hand, he employs Aquinas’s three principles to guide the readers to understand the whole structure and connotations of the novel.  相似文献

The thesis will study Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon under the guidance of Bakhtin’s of theory of dialogism. Through a de tailed case study, the thesis comes to a rational conclusion at last: by choosing a complex way to reflect a simple "root-searching" theme, re gardless of the reader’s difficulties in understanding, Toni Morrison actually has something more to tell to her readers, that is, by picturing the course of the protagonist’s searching for "African root", she parallels a way for the African American literature to keep its essence and characteristics.  相似文献

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle. He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle. In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about, then he can omit the things he knows, and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water."Here, one eighth refers to the information given by the author, and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth. The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle. This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story. With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.  相似文献

Color terms perform both the aesthetic and informative functions and possess various meanings according to different cultural backgrounds. It seems that people are more likely to label colors in a consistent fashion in each unique culture. Therefore, it is highly essential to investigate the cultural relevance of color terms, especially the color words in Chinese and English. Translation of color terms is also discussed from different aspects to show people’s cultural preferences.  相似文献

The Relevance Theory put forward by Sperber and Wilson not only gives rise to a new research on pragmatics, but also provides a new theoretic foundation for other disciplines. Gutt applies the theory to translation and gives a relevance-theoretic account of translation. The relevance-theoretic communicative model provides rational explanation for existence of the implicit information. The appropri ate treatment of the implicit information is consistent with readers’ cognitive environment and expectation. Human communication de pends on not only the text, but also the inferential context. The adequate contextual effect is derived from the correct judgment and infer ence of the implicit information in communication. Therefore, the translator should match the original author’ s intention with target text readers’ expectation to make sure that they yield adequate contextual effects with appropriate processing efforts. Implicitness is one of the features of Shakespeare’ s works. It is more demanding for the translators to catch and transfer to the target readers the implicit information. Zhu Shenghao and Liang Shiqiu, the two famous translators adopt different translation strategies to deal with the implicit information in the works.  相似文献

Movie is a popular art which occupies an important position in people’s leisure time. Movie title,as the most direct and accessible tool for audience to know about the movie,is very significant to attract audience into the cinema. Therefore, the translation of movie title cannot be ignored. However, due to the cultural differences in Chinese and English culture, the problem of movie title translation is obvious which needs to be paid attention to the translation and people working in movie industry.Traditional translation theory puts more emphasis on the important and authoritative status of original text and author. But this notion cannot satisfy the needs of movie title translation to the largest extent. Movie is not only a cultural and linguistic product,it also is a special commercial product. The ultimate objective of movie is to allure the audience into the cinema to watch and appreciate it in addition to provide the cultural information. Reception aesthetics,as a theory of literary criticism, gives priority to readers’ role in literary understanding and interpretation. According to reception aesthetics, the horizon of expectation should be taken into consideration when the translation work begins to be done. Horizon of expectation is composed of the readers’ or audiences’ previous cultural norms, assumptions, and criteria in the source language and culture at a given time. Movie title,as a special text,is also understood and influenced by the audience’s horizon of expectation. Chinese audience, before they decide to watch a movie, are naturally harbor their horizon of expectation about the movie. They will form their judgment and assumptions about the genre, plot, story, background about the movie from the movie title. These kind of horizon of expectation will consequently influence their ultimate decision to watch the movie or not. Hence,in doing the movie title translation, the translator is supposed to keep the audience’s horizon of expectation in mind and try his utmost to achieve the fusion of expectation. In this way,the comparatively satisfactory version is likely to come into being and finally will live up to the audience’s expectations. As a result, from the perspective of reception aesthetics, the author proposes three feasible translation methods of movie title: literal translation, free translation and adaptation.  相似文献
