Part Five: Iron Cage and AtticV.铁笼与阁楼Before reaching my imagined destinations: the 8th district where the Elysee Palace and the Matigon Hotel were situated, the van stopped in front of an old building in the 6th district, near the Church Saint-Germain. It was a police station. Of course there was no red carpet out for me. The waiting hall was an iron cage where there were already plenty of sardines(沙丁鱼). The cage was so full that my bodyguards had to cram (填满) me into it, boxed in with at least 15 people. It must have had the highest population density(人口密度) of anywhere in the word. Squeezed in among the others, I could hardly breathe and soon was dripping with sweat. The waiting time was long; one minute seemed to me a century.  相似文献

(A) I have had thousands of classes since I started school nine years ago. But only one class was the most important. It happened last term just after I had got a bad result in an exam. I was sad and had lost my confidence ( 信心). I decided to go to a class which can tell me how to be successful. The speaker walked into the room. But she did not start talking like a teacher. In- stead, she held up a 20 yuan note! “Who wants this?”she asked. Unsurprisingly, everyone in the class held up …  相似文献

The only Chinese person who worked in my office was Gillian Tang. She had come to London from south China to complete her education and this was her first job. To us westerners she was a most unusual person. She was kind to everyone, and never suspected that anyone might abuse her kindness. She was the sort of person who, if she heard any of us talking about a book or a video or something else which we wanted to borrow or buy, she  相似文献

The Unexciting Election Process 平淡的选举过程 The polling place was located in a church. There were a few desks with volunteer workers sitting behind them, all smiles. No one checked my ID.I just went up to the volunteer workers and told them who I was,and one of them found my name from a voters' list. The only thing I needed to do was to sign next to my name to validate the information.  相似文献

Mom
I was only two and a half when my real mom died. One morning, my brothers and I went to wake her up, but she wouldn't answer us. When she didn't respond (应答;响应) to our calls, my oldest brother, Shane, got my dad. The last thing I remember about my real mom was watching the ambulance (救护车) taking her away from  相似文献

Invisible Racial Disparities 隐形的种族差异 One aftemoon when I was going out to do some errands (差事),I sew three young men, about 15 to 17 years of age, standing in front of a house in my neighborhood, chatting and laughing.I took a notice of them because they looked different and kind of out of place:They were not white.I continued on to run my errands without thinking too much of it.When I came back about an hour later, there was a police car parked in front of the house where these young folks were. After I drove around the comer,I saw a second police car,and one of the three youths was in the back seat of the car, handcuffed (带着手铐),with two officers questioning him.A thought shot across my mind:Are these young people members of a local youth gang,or are they just in a wrong neighborhood?  相似文献
