The pH dependency of turmeric, used as a dye or pigment on ethnographic objects from the Santa Cruz Islands, can present a conservation problem. Abstract

This paper describes the examination and treatment of three polychrome wooden sculptures by Pedro de Mena, an important seventeenth-century Spanish sculptor. These were three interesting cases, involving not only the usual conservation processes but also special situations such as the recovery of a glass eye, the replacement of missing parts and polychromy with the help of old photographs, and the analysis of a sculpture where the flesh colours varied depending on whether or not they had been exposed to sunlight. Our understanding of polychrome sculpture technique is enriched with new information concerning the blues of the cloaks, coloured glazes, and materials added to the paint to achieve different effects.  相似文献

Abstract

Since 1980, much research in the field of treatment and conservation of archaeological wood has been carried out at the Conservation Department, Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University. Materials and methods used in conservation have been changing gradually over the years worldwide. It was necessary to study critically previous masters and doctoral dissertations on Egyptian archaeological and historic wood, all written in Arabic. This review of them includes a brief history of the Conservation Department at Cairo University and five main focal points of past research: types of wood used throughout Egyptian history, assessment of wood decay, wood properties and composition, treatment and conservation of decorated wood, and the evaluation of chemicals and polymers used in the treatment of archaeological wood and composite objects containing wood.  相似文献

Abstract

Chloride-contaminated archaeological iron is unstable and problematic to store and display within museum collections. Reducing its chloride ion content using aqueous desalination followed by storage in controlled relative humidity offers one treatment option. This study reports a quantitative assessment of chloride extraction by aqueous deoxygenated alkaline desalination solutions from 120 individual archaeological iron nails. The three treatment methods comprised alkaline sulphite solution (0.1 M NaOH/0.05 M Na2SO3) at room temperature and at 60°C and sodium hydroxide solution (0.1 M) deoxygenated using a nitrogen gas positive pressure system at room temperature. Chloride extraction was monitored using a specific ion meter. The nails were digested after treatment to measure their residual chloride content. A wide range of extraction patterns emerged, with the majority of individual treatments extracting 60–99% of the chloride present. Residual chloride levels for 87% of the objects fell below 1000 ppm and 42% were below 200 ppm. Although no treatment extracted 100% of the chloride in the object, alkaline desalination produced very significant reductions in chloride content. The impact of this on future corrosion of the objects is discussed. This quantitative and statistically viable assessment of deoxygenated desalination treatments provides evidence to support their use in conservation practice, which will impact on procedures for the preservation and management of archaeological heritage.  相似文献

Abstract

Although desalination of archaeological iron reduces its chloride concentration and enhances object stability, the reduction in corrosion rate that this produces has never been quantified. This study measures post-treatment corrosion rates in accelerated corrosion environments to identify the impact of removing chloride ions on corrosion rate. Thirty-five archaeological iron nails, treated individually in either alkaline sulphite or nitrogen-deoxygenated sodium hydroxide, were exposed to 75°C and 75% relative humidity together with 31 untreated objects from the same archaeological sites. Object weight change and visual examination of physical change before and after the test period were used to monitor corrosion. 77% of treated objects showed no weight gain and no visible signs of corrosion, while 90% of untreated objects did corrode. The impact of chloride on corrosion of untreated objects was clearly established by a significant linear correlation between chloride content and weight gain. Treated objects with <400 ppm chloride content showed no corrosion behaviour. Corrosion of treated objects was attributed to incomplete treatment: 93% of objects treated to <5 mg/l Cl? in the final solution bath displayed no corrosion behaviour. Based on these results, desalination of iron objects to enhance their stability offers a valuable option for reducing corrosion rates of archaeological iron, which should increase object lifespan. The results also raise the question of whether low levels of post-treatment residual chloride produce corrosion of any significance. Answering this will be an important step forward for managing the preservation of archaeological iron.  相似文献

The treatment of flaking pigment on two paintings, one on ceramic and the other on glass, is described; a brief history of painting on glass and ceramics places these works in context. The treatments are discussed in relation to other types of treatment for paintings on similar rigid supports. ABSTRACT

Aspects of preventive conservation are central to the long-term preservation of archaeological sites such as Pompeii. Mitigating moisture ingress and its manifold effects on decay mechanisms such as salt degradation are of critical importance when planning durable conservation strategies. A suite of non-destructive techniques was used to diagnose decay mechanisms at an ancient tomb monument at the Porta Nocera Necropolis. Rising damp and salt contamination are shown to be actively contributing to on-going deterioration of the plaster surfaces. An existing shelter is shown to be inadequate in its protection. These initial results are used to inform a more in-depth, long-term survey as well as the design of a holistic preventive strategy.  相似文献

The surviving gilded and polychrome altarpieces and sculptures in Portuguese churches, and the historical documents relating to them, offer an opportunity for understanding material and technological choices regarding gesso grounds. This paper focuses on the historical documentary research about gessoes — one aspect of a wider research project which also involved investigation of physical/chemical evidence, and archaeological reconstructions of gilded gesso grounds. Documentary research sheds light on the meaning of the terms used in historical documents, and on artists’ choice of materials and practices, production, and trade patterns of materials. It informs technological investigations and conservation decisions. The paper also stresses the importance of the evidence gained by using the historical and archaeological methodology applied in material culture studies, in which documentary, analytical, and experimental information complement and/or elucidate each other, leading to a comprehensive understanding of this technology.  相似文献

Abstract

The surfaces of acrylic emulsion (dispersion) paint films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), with supporting chemical information provided via infrared spectroscopy. The morphological and chemical features of the surfaces of a series of recently cast reference paint films were explored, including characterization of changes induced by exposure to water and mineral spirits. A portable in situ AFM system was also used to document the surfaces of acrylic emulsion paintings in Tate's collection. The complete and partial removal of migrated surfactant was successfully imaged alongside features arising from mechanical action. Differences in paint surfaces and migrated surfactant layers were observed in relation to pigment type, paint brand and exposure to accelerated ageing, in addition to applied wet surface cleaning treatments. The findings contribute to further understanding of the subtle changes occurring at acrylic emulsion paint film surfaces and are relevant to current debates on the removal/disturbance of original surface surfactant from these films through conservation treatment.  相似文献

This paper arises from a wider research project focussed on Portuguese gilded altarpieces and sculptures of the Baroque period, which also involved research into contemporary documents and into historical context, as well as into the history of use of materials and practices in gilding technology. It focuses on the results from analyses of historical samples and samples from archaeological reconstructions of gessoes and gilded surfaces. Analytical and experimental research shed light on diverse aspects of the technology of gilding grounds, such as range and composition of materials within historical objects, methods of production of gilding materials, gilding practices, actual performance of materials and gilded surfaces, and the science underlying the artists’ empirical choice of materials and practices. The documentary research (discussed in Part 1) elucidated the analytical and experimental research presented here, and vice-versa, resulting in a richer and more balanced understanding of the gessoes and of the motives of the people involved in their production. It is hoped that the results will inform future technological studies and conservation decisions.  相似文献

Abstract

This study concerns a group of objects excavated in First World War trenches in France and Belgium and brought for conservation to the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. These objects were associated with unidentified human remains thought to be of soldiers killed in battles between 1914 and 1918. The contribution of the Institute to this project was to investigate the objects in relation to their context in an attempt to identify the human remains with which they were associated. The experience of working on sensitive material in a very particular context is discussed, and how this influenced the conservation context in which the decision-making process happened is described. It also addresses how some conservation boundaries were crossed, in order to contribute to a better understanding of life during the First World War, and discusses how material culture is valued differently in different contexts (and how this will influence conservation decisions). It concludes that neither object meaning nor conservation decisions can be viewed objectively and that conservation has to be viewed as a social process governed by economic, political, religious, social and cultural dynamics, rather than a primarily technical process.  相似文献

Abstract

A study of the composition and phase distribution of the corrosion layers on three ferrous objects, excavated at K2 (Bambandyanalo), an archaeological site in South Africa, was conducted. The objective of the study was to obtain information that can contribute to conservation procedures to be performed on the iron artefacts from this site. Examination of cross sections by means of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy coupled to a scanning electron microscope (SEM–EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed the same corrosion composition and structure for all the objects under study, namely an internal layer adjacent to the metal surface with ghost inclusions and an external layer containing quartz grains. The study also revealed that the presence of magnetite (Fe3O4), maghemite (γFe2O3), and lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) within the internal layer is the only difference between the chemical compositions of iron corrosion products within the two layers. The results also made it possible to retrace the corrosion history during burial and long-term storage.  相似文献

Abstract

The removal of calcareous accretions from archaeological bronzes can be a difficult step in their conservation. Chemical cleaning with chelating agents might be an alternative to mechanical methods. In this study the use of the chelating agent sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) was examined to determine whether it is effective in discriminating between calcium carbonate and copper patina, and non-corrosive to copper alloys in the presence of air. Comparative experiments with STPP and disodium ethylenediamine-tetraacetate (Na2-EDTA) were carried out on synthetic malachite, cuprite, calcium carbonate, naturally polished malachite surfaces and sheets of bronze and brass. In addition to the properties of the chelating agent, the solubility of the salts and the pH values of the solutions are crucial factors in the removal of compounds of low solubility. The quantity of metal ions dissolved, estimated by atomic absorption spectral analysis and scanning electron microscopy, showed that the calcareous accretions could be removed satisfactorily, but STPP also dissolved constituent parts of the patina, such as malachite and cuprite, and may harm bronze or brass. Compared to Na2-EDTA, STPP is less effective in dissolving calcium carbonate. It is less harmful to the patina and base metal, but may lead to patination of the underlying metal.  相似文献

Abstract

Various desalination methods had been used in the past to treat a large collection of archaeological iron objects. In order to establish whether desalination treatments had been effective, the condition of the objects was assessed and the data analyzed using statistical methods. It was found that objects which had been treated using desalination methods were less likely to re-corrode, and the conclusion was that the development of more effective techniques of chloride removal would be useful.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Preventive conservation, with its origins grounded in the material fabric of cultural material, is in a period of transformation, with numerous practitioners, in and outside of the field of conservation, considering its broader and holistic objectives. The conventional tools for the assertion of preventive conservation principles, namely the assessment and management of risks to cultural material from the ‘ten agents of deterioration’, have a central focus on the primacy of physical materials and degradation, with less clear relationships with people, place, and time in their modelling. With a case study focus on collections in the Philippines, this paper argues for a practice of preventive conservation that incorporates a balanced assessment and broader thinking around the contexts of objects, people, place, and time. The case studies of ecclesiastical Church collections, and museum environments in the Philippines, demonstrate how the interdependency of objects, people, place and time forms a holistic and conceptual preventive conservation framework. Through a cyclic renegotiation of these four parameters, this paper speculates on the gaps and opportunities for an inclusive view of preventive conservation that is current and more sustainable.  相似文献

Abstract

Insect infestation is a serious problem in museum collections in Spain and Latin America. This paper investigates the efficacy of modified atmospheres as an anoxant for museum pests, using wooden objects including polychrome sculptures infested by Cerambycidae and Anobiidae species. Insects of long life cycle have been found to be very resistant to carbon dioxide atmospheres. However, inert gases such as argon and nitrogen used in plastic barrier bags effectively eliminated insects in all stages of development. No chemical alteration was observed in the treated materials, including polychromy. These treatments are in progress in a project for biodeterioration control in countries with both tropical or subtropical and Mediterranean climates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Outdoor sculptures are part of the sociocultural identity of cities, but are extremely vulnerable to deterioration due to exposure to harsh environmental conditions and climate change. Furthermore, deterioration by micro-organisms renders urgent the need to design protective coatings. This research proposes an integrated methodology for the development of innovative and sustainable nanofilms for applications in the area of art conservation, very specifically in the preventive conservation of outdoor sculptures. Gathering objective data for the characterization of the surface microbiota is important in order to design strategies that make use of bio or nanotechnology innovative coatings. Methodologies for the characterization of the microbiota present in a granite outdoor sculpture, followed by preliminary results on the application of protective antimicrobial coatings for surfaces of cultural objects are described.  相似文献

Abstract

During the Italian Renaissance wax was used to produce polychrome relief portraits on a miniature scale. This use of wax as a material for finished sculpture was subsequently adapted to the production of tableaux, of anatomical models, of life-size wax-works and of wax dolls. This article gives a brief account of the techniques of this type of sculpture and describes problems of conservation and restoration. Methods of repairing, cleaning and restoration are discussed, and the article concludes with a full account of the restoration work carried out on an allegorical tableau by Gaetano Zumbo and on two 17th-century ecclesiastical dolls.  相似文献

Abstract

A small but significant proportion of the archaeological iron objects in the British Museum collection have been problematic in that some of them have required repeated treatment. The deterioration of iron objects during storage was studied using microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and ion chromatography. A total of 125 iron objects, including 56 from two British Roman sites and 69 from three Anglo-Saxon sites, were studied. Both surface corrosion and corrosion layers on polished cross-sections were investigated. The study revealed that the present condition of the iron objects varies; some are in a stable condition and others have been deteriorating, with pitting and weeping present on the surface. No treatment method had stopped corrosion for every object, although the alkaline sulphite treatment seemed to be more effective than the other methods. The results also showed that chloride ions can be present at the interface of the metal and inner corrosion layers. It is recommended that iron objects which have been mechanically cleaned without desalination treatments are kept in a dry environment to prevent further deterioration.  相似文献
