Jef Verschueren is the representative of European Continental pragmatic thought. He puts forward a new theory that pragmatics is a perspective on language and he uses the theory of adaptation to analyze pragmatics."The general concern for the study of linguistic pragmatics is to understand the meaningful functioning of a language as a dynamic process operating on context-structure relationships at various levels of salience"(Verschuren 2000:69).The focal points in contexts are the utterer and the interpreter, for the physical, social and mental aspects of contexts are activated by language users’cognitive processes.Verschueren divided interpreter’s roles into five types:addressee, side participant,bystander,listener-in and eavesdropper, which can explain the adaptation of context and language choices. This is also applicable in college English classroom as the English class is also a context. At present students taught at the same time by the same teacher do not master the knowledge at the same level. One of the reason is that students are not engaged in the class at the same level.According to the Verschueren’s theory, the best English teaching class is one that each student in the addressee of teachers.Addressee is a metaphor which means everyone should follow the teachers’explanation carefully and take part in the teaching activities. It has something to do with interaction theory, which considers students as active individuals but not passive receivers. One of the common interaction patterns is questioning. In this thesis, the question how to make students addresses through adoption of questioning approach in college English class will be researched.  相似文献

In the process of classroom education, setting questions in class is an important teaching method, which is used in the whole teaching activity and acts as the link between the thoughts of teachers and students. Hence, creating a wisdom class and using according questions to aid the class are of great significance to both students and teachers. In this paper, 40 elementary students from the 9th grade and 10 of their teachers were studied and the result showed that learning requirements facing to the whole class and students' learning beliefs are essential principles, and questions should be set by having an exhaustive understanding of the textbook, giving previous homework, creating a thinking atmosphere, and setting a proper difficulty for the students. The proper time to set questions is when the old knowledge and new knowledge of the student conflict in the awareness of the student, when the teacher wants to spread thought, and when the teacher wants to make a conclusion.  相似文献

It is difficult for teachers to track student learning on a daily basis. However, the Intemet and new technologies that students use every day can make this much easier and more accessible. This article intends to make evident that using student response systems, such as Socrative and a smartphone, teachers can get more control of their students' pace of learning and their progress. Socrative is a very useful tool that helps teachers track student learning in real time. Socrative software can be downloaded on students' smartphones, tablets, or laptops and can facilitate online testing with immediate feedback and access to test results. Students receive immediate feedback as soon as they finish answering test questions. It can also promote cooperative learning when students work in groups discussing coursework. Use of the software can increase motivation, self-esteem, and understanding of concepts discussed in class.  相似文献

The role of textbooks,as one important channel between teachers and students, has always aroused scholars’interests, but what indeed are the roles of textbook for students and teachers? This paper aims to evaluate a listening textbook that is used by English major university students in China.Three research questions are proposed which are:(1) What are the students’per ceptions about the listening textbook? (2) What are the teachers’opinions about the listening textbook? (3) To what extent do students and teachers perceptions match? In order to answer these three research questions, questionnaires were designed for both students and teachers to obtain the data. This study is supported both qualitatively and quantitatively. The data of this research suggested that both students and teachers have found advantages of this listening textbook, which they may find helpful for their learning and teaching, but they are also not satisfied with some aspects of the textbook, which they think need further improvement. The students’and teachers’opinions to some extent have reached some agreement about the textbook, but students may not be so enthusiastic about the textbook, while the teachers may show much reliance on the text book. This study has its limitations, but it also provides some insights for teachers and textbook writers.  相似文献

Cultural differences have a great effect on English learning, especially on college English reading.Reading is a crucial tool in acquiring information and knowledge.Culture cannot be separated from language.College English reading should focus on the differences of culture. It is important to understand how to lay stress on the differences in the course of college English teaching and learning about reading for increasing students’ ability of reading. This thesis analyzes the influence of culture on English reading and tries to set up a principle of teaching English through culture. To support my point of view, the relationship between language and culture is discussed first.Language is a part of culture and shaped by culture;it is also the carrier of culture and reflects cultural features of a community in which the language is spoken.Language and culture are closely related with each other. From the aspect of language teaching and learning,to teach a foreign language is to teach another culture;to learn a language is also to learn another culture.  相似文献

In EFL teaching environment, classroom is the main place where language acquisition occurs. In the classroom, teacher question is viewed as an important constituent of teacher talk. Teacher questions also give impetus to classroom interaction. The quantity and quality of teacher questions have a great influence on learners. However, in China, few aspects of the research on teacher questions have been discussed in some relevant articles. This paper attempts to analyze the characteristics of teacher questions from two aspects: display questions and referential questions. Moreover, it explores the relationship between teacher question and student output. Finally, according to the survey results in this paper the researcher gives some implications and guidance to English teachers.  相似文献

With the reform of college English course, the objectives, philosophy and models of Chinese EFL teaching have been deeply changed. So college students are required to have higher language proficiency;it is also a challenge for the English teachers in our country. The traditional teaching mode should be changed.College English teaching is not only to input knowledge to students, but also to foster their skills on the application of knowledge, and excavate their potential in order to promote their language proficiency.Writing,as one of the efficient ways to measure students’comprehensive English ability, has attracted more attention in the field of English researches, which, however, got little improvement so far. What we can see from the requirements is that college students and teachers should put more attention on their output instead of input alone. Therefore, this paper intends to apply Swain’s "Output Hypothesis" to the college English teaching of non-English major students in China, and make some teaching suggestions based on the three functions of the "Output Hypothesis".  相似文献

Understanding the distinctions among heat, energy and temperature can be difficult for students at all levels of instruction, including those in engineering. Misconceptions about heat transfer have been found to persist, even after students successfully complete relevant coursework. New instructional methods are needed to address these misconceptions. This pilot study examined whether researcher-developed and inquiry-based activities could increase conceptual understanding of heat transfer and alter common misconceptions. Twenty-two undergraduate chemical engineering students were assessed before and after instruction with inquiry-based activities using a ten-item concept inventory. Concept inventory questions were developed to assess students' performance on questions closely related to the inquiry-based activities and questions applying concepts in new contexts. Participants significantly improved their overall scores from pre-test to post-test. An examination of performance on individual items revealed significant improvement on half of those questions closely related to the instructional activities and half of those applying concepts in new but related contexts. Results are examined in light of the assessment and inquiry activities that were used, as well as the difficulty of the concepts. Educational implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of English teaching is not only to make the students learn new words and grammar, answer multiple-choice questions to get good scores, but also to enhance the students’abilities of the integrated application of English, speaking and listening in particular. The ultimate goal of learning English is to use English to communicate with others in the future jobs and real life. However, the non-English majors have great trouble speaking English in class and in real life. Such ways as Socratic dialogues, cause analysis and questionnaire are used to investigate the reasons. In order to improve speaking ability, group discussion is used in class. In consequence, the students have more interest, motivation, courage and confidence in speaking English. Meanwhile, they have also established the concept of using what they learned in class, in practical work and real life.  相似文献

This study examined the use of Prompt Sentences (PSs) in lower level Chinese classes. By asking three types of PSs to students and quantitatively analyzing their responses, the author tried to answer the questions (1) whether it is effective to use PS in the beginning Chinese class, and (2) when to apply which type of PS to which group of students and what situations. The author found that using PSs in beginning Chinese classes is only effective when students have some grip on vocabulary. No particular type of PS stood out as more or less effective in terms of developing language skills. PS's have an insignificant impact on students' pronunciation in the short term.  相似文献

It is known that the IELTS test has not been a good predictor of English capability in academic settings. More information is required. Are students not motivated to keep improving their English; what obstacles do they face? The English language issues facing international students from China at one University are explored through a survey and focus groups. It is observed that a lack of motivation is not the key factor. Rather one core problem is the very difficult demands of acculturation within a short time frame which would enable confidence for the students to continue to engage with other English speaking students. When faced with such immediate and hard to achieve acculturation, many retreat to their language groups. In the academic context, support for the transition to discipline based academic genres is double difficult as the time frame for second language learners is longer, but performance requirements are more immediate. Many first language students also have difficulties in this area, but have the easier language path to mastery. The study draws usefully on a comparison made with students studying English in China.  相似文献

Teachers are often urged to use a variety of modes of instruction to ensure that diverse student interests and abilities can be accomodated. Yet teachers can be limited in the instructional modes they can use because of insufficient background or knowledge about a specific instructional mode (Dawson, 2004). Teaching approaches are various in purposes such as to trigger students' interest in science, to discover through inquiry approach, to build students understanding through constructivism approach or to introduce a concept through demontration approach. Every approach has the strength and weakness in its use. Although inquiry may not be the only way to teach science, many science educators believe that it may be the best way for students to learn science (Audet & Jordan, 2005). According to Woolfolk (2001), constructivism is a mode of instruction that emphasizes the active role of the learner in building, understanding and making sense of information. Demonstrations by teacher can be used with students of all ages and across all subjects. The teacher is not only knowledgeable about the topic but also uses a variety of aids to ensure that students understand what is being demonstrated (Marsh, 2004). By studying their teaching approaches and methods, the actual practices could be analysed and the effectiveness status of their effectiveness could be determined. Specifically, this study aimed to answer these questions in terms of three approaches namely inquiry, constructivism and demonstrations; how far is this approach effective in terms of teaching and learning, and what is the correlation between these three approaches. Data were collected from primary school science teachers (N=239) and the results shown that the teachers were agreeable with the three approaches, inquiry approach (mean=3.74, SD=0.27), demonstration approach (mean=3.61, SD=0.27) and constructivism approach (mean=3.86, SD=0.30). The results also showed that there are significant correlations among inquiry, demonstration and constructivism approach. This finding showed that primary school science teachers not depend only on one type of approach and apply variously in teaching science. There are also positive and significant correlation between that approaches used by primary school science teachers.  相似文献

This paper presents the EUCLIDES (Enhancing the Use of Cooperative Learning to Increase Development of Science Studies) project (134246-LLP-1-2007-1-IT-1-COMENIUS-CMP), which aims at introducing and pilot-testing an innovative teaching and training methodology, based on the constructivist approach and on problem-based learning (PBL), through the use of information communication technology (ICT) instruments. This methodology has been developed for the study of science subjects and, is currently used in some European schools of secondary education, involving teachers and students. A moodle platform has been developed to enforce the application and use of the methodology. Through this platform, teachers can monitor the progress of the work of the students and intervene as facilitators when it is necessary to provide further co-ordination, pose questions and suggest problem-based approaches. The use of the platform secures that the teachers remain distant from the students allowing students to work by themselves and find solutions to the problems posed.  相似文献

The research questions being asked are: 1. How do architectural students learn with mobile technology? and 2. What predictors lead to satisfaction in a mobile learning (M-Learning) environment? It is understood that environment and culture contribute to the development of cognition. Critical pedagogical and constructivist theories ground this research with the view that "one learns from their experiences with their environments". The methodology used in this research includes both quantitative and qualitative methods: case studies and surveys. This research investigates how mobile technology is influencing learning. Outcomes of this research include a better understanding of how students learn with present technology, their preferred mobile devices, barriers to M-Learning, methods by which students learn best, and suggestions on how to improve M-Learning. Other outcomes of this research are the identification of variables leading to student satisfaction with M-Learning.  相似文献
