Tape recordings of cerebral palsied children with speech problems were played back to 10 speech correctionists on three different occasions one week apart. On the third occasion eight out of ten of the children were judged as having a less severe speech problem even though the correctionists were listening to exactly the same recordings under identical conditions. The results indicate that some of the improvement reported by speech therapists in the speech of cerebral palsied children, following a period of therapy, might represent a change in the listener rather than a change in the child's speech.  相似文献

Research indicates that individuals with elevated levels of public speaking anxiety report significantly different mental representations of the public speaking context, when compared to individuals with lower levels of anxiety. To examine the effect of the differences in mental representations, narratives for three public speaking contexts were developed. Results indicated that disposition (i.e., trait apprehension) was a better predictor of state anxiety when giving an impromptu speech. Situational factors (i.e., importance, skills, impression), however, were better predictors of state anxiety when either giving a speech to a 5th grade class or giving a speech to friends.  相似文献

A ten year update of Michigan secondary school speech programs indicated little change in curricula. The basic course is best described as an elective, semester, combination course for ninth through twelfth graders. Most frequently offered advanced courses are drama, debate, and advanced speech. Most respondents graduated from one of Michigan's state universities, and usually teach English in addition to speech. Few are involved in professional associations.  相似文献

Scant research has centred on the wellbeing of librarians. This paper seeks to answer how do librarians in the Higher Education sector describe their wellbeing, including what enables and impacts it?MethodAn Adapted Interactive Model of Research Design (AIRD) (adapted from Maxwell, 2009) was used together with Contributive Research Method (Puig et al., 2018). Data was collected during an online satellite event where 97 people from 34 institutions in three countries participated, from which 57 contributed data to the study through a workshop presentation on maintaining wellbeing. During the online interactive workshop, data was gathered in a contributory a manner, using embedded digital tools Mentimeter, and Hypothes.is.ResultsHigher Education librarians in the study aligned with Diener's (1984) conceptualisation of subjective wellbeing when defining wellbeing. Data also surfaced a shared understanding of subjective wellbeing, and identification of impactors and enablers to the wellbeing of librarians in the Higher Education Sector. The study surfaced two key findings: firstly six enablers to wellbeing were identified; and secondly, the wellbeing of Higher Education sector librarians is heavily impacted by work intensification.ConclusionsThe voices of librarians in the Higher Education sector have surfaced the need for inclusive wellbeing programs and strategies.  相似文献

The principle of congruity was proposed several years ago as an explanation for certain behavioral changes in communication situations. In this article the principle of congruity is offered as an explanation for attitude change in an oral communication situation. A predictive model is developed, taking a listener's attitude toward the speaker, the speech topic, the speaker's delivery, and the stylistic treatment of the speech topic as the significant variables in determining what the listener's attitude toward the speaker and the speech topic will be after listening to the speech. An experiment to test the predictive model is reported. The results generally support a principle of congruity in this type of oral communication situation.  相似文献

Anxiety experienced while in a public speaking situation (speech anxiety) is discussed within the framework of Trait‐State Anxiety Theory. Speech anxiety may be considered a dispositional variable designed to measure individual differences in speech anxiety proneness (Speech A‐Trait) or a measure of anxiety experienced during a particular speech (Speech A‐State). Physiological and behavioral measures of speech anxiety are typically viewed as A‐State measures. Self‐report indices may be considered either state or trait anxiety measures depending on the context in which the measures were obtained. The development of a scale to measure both Speech A‐State and Speech A‐Trait, including initial normative, reliability, and validity data, is reported.  相似文献

The following study details the procedure by means of which a Semantic Differential for use in investigations in the area of speech correction was developed. It is the third in a series of studies by the same author to appear in SM, the preceding two having dealt with general speech and the theatre arts, respectively. The three studies are similar in scope and content, defining the problems, demonstrating the methodology, and offering suggestions concerning possible applications of the measuring instruments. The author acknowledges that the studies are exploratory and the results tentative. He suggests that the Semantic Differential offers a new approach to certain dimensions of meaning in the speech area which have been slow to yield to older methods.  相似文献

Abstract

Authors of basic public-speaking course textbooks frequently encourage students to select speech topics in which they have vested interest, care deeply about, and hold strong opinions and beliefs. This study explores students' level of ego-involvement with informative and persuasive speech topics, examines possible ego-involvement predictors of students' speech grades, and investigates the influence of preparation time and process activities on public-speaking grades. Results reveal that students' ego-involvement is positively related to their speech success; however, the explanation is more complex than those offered by basic public-speaking course textbooks. Pedagogical implications and areas for future research are discussed.  相似文献

The goals, pedagogy, and structure of the first course in speech communication often convey an unintended but nonetheless erroneous implication of audience control by a speaker. Using the persuasive campaign as the pedagogical basis for the speech fundamentals course allows for a broader range of rhetorical strategies and new criteria for evaluating student performances. Use of the persuasive campaign is also totally consistent with contemporary theories of human behavior.  相似文献

This essay examines the issue of “hate speech,” racial, sexual, and ethnic‐based expressions of hate, on the college campus. Many commentators have called for colleges and universities to create polices to prohibit such expression. Others have noted that First Amendment rights protect such expression. This essay discusses both positions, and offers a third perspective designed to protect expression without dismissing the damage caused by hate speech.  相似文献

A persistent problem faced by the speech fundamentals instructor is that of evaluating student performance and assigning a numerical or letter “grade.”; Unlike courses in which the final grade is based upon one or two tests or projects, in the fundamentals course it most often is based on a series of performances, both spoken and written, which occur throughout the duration of the course. This study was designed to examine evaluation procedures in the speech fundamentals programs found in colleges and universities in this country. Although evaluation procedures were the primary focus of the investigation, other factors relating to the general organization and conduct of the beginning speech course also were considered.  相似文献
