Summary Bibliographic protocol (bibp) is a new web-based protocol designed to provide library-based services for bibliographic links on the web. Links to books and journals may be easily created using bibp:ISBN and bibp:ISSN hyperreferences. A decentralized service model ensures that local bibliographic servers take precedence over publisher and global servers. The required resolution technology is widely deployed on the Internet and bibp-Z39.50 gateway software is available for implementation of library-based services. In April, 1994 Mercy College completed an extended self-study in preparation for a team visit from The Commission on Higher Education, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. This article examines the impact of institutional evaluation on the library's bibliographic instruction program, and its evolution into an information literacy program responsive to changes in student demographics, curriculum content, assessment methods, and communication technologies. Three initiatives are described: (1) an effort to increase course-integrated information literacy instruction in the general education requirement; (2) development of an information literacy assessment plan; and (3) recruitment and training of information literacy peer tutors to assist public services librarians. As scholars are well aware, the scientific and technical periodicals of the 17th and 18th centuries are difficult to identify and to locate. To test this observation 640 scientific and technical periodicals published in the period 1791 to 1800 were drawn from four well-known source lists and searched in three major national union lists of serials. The results revealed that not only were the titles widely scattered in the source lists, but that only 57 percent of all the titles could be located in any of the national union lists. 相似文献
