Problem-Based Learning (PBL), an instructional approach originated in medical education, has gained increasing attention in
K-12 science education because of its emphasis on self-directed learning and real-world problem-solving. Yet few studies have
examined how PBL can be adapted for kindergarten. In this study, we examined how a veteran kindergarten teacher, who was experienced
with PBL in her own learning, adapted PBL to teach students earth materials, a topic emphasized in the new state curriculum
standards but students had difficulty understanding. The pre-post tests showed that students improved their content understanding.
Analysis of the classroom discourse showed that PBL and the teacher’s facilitation strategies provided opportunities for students
to develop their questioning skills. In conclusion, we discuss the implications of this study for using PBL in kindergarten
classrooms. 相似文献

This case study of a preservice secondary mathematics teacher focuses on the teacher’s beliefs about his role as mathematics
teacher. Data were collected over the final 5 months of the teacher’s university teacher education program through interviews,
written course assignments, and observations of student-teaching. Findings indicate that the preservice teacher valued classroom
roles in which students, rather than the teacher, explained traditional mathematics content. As his student-teaching internship
progressed, the teacher began to develop new roles and engaged students in additional mathematical processes. These results
emphasize the need for preservice teachers to recognize how teacher and student roles impact interrelationships between understanding
and mathematical activity, and illustrate the nature of teacher learning that can occur during an internship. 相似文献

This paper reports on one preservice teacher’s use of the Inquiry-Application Instructional Model (I-AIM) to plan and teach
an instructional sequence on photosynthesis to 5th-grade students. Analysis of the preservice teacher’s planned and enacted
instructional sequences and interviews shows that the preservice teacher was successful in leveraging the conceptual change
but not the inquiry aspects of the I-AIM. The mediators of this preservice teacher’s use of the I-AIM included her approach
to teaching science, the curriculum materials she had available, and the meanings she made of the underlying frameworks. Understanding
the mediators of preservice teachers’ uses of instructional models can inform teacher educators’ approaches to supporting
preservice teachers in using instructional models for organizing science instructional sequences. 相似文献

As an action research project, using mixed methodology, this study investigated how the use of math journals affected second
grade students’ communication of mathematical thinking. For this study, math journal instruction was provided. The data gathering
included pre- and post- math assessment, students’ math journals, interviews with the students, and teacher’s reflective journal.
Findings of the study indicated that the use of math journals positively influenced the students’ communication of mathematical
thinking and the use of math vocabulary. Additionally, math journals served as a communication tool between the students and
teacher and an assessment tool for the teacher. The implications of this study regarding students’ writing ability and time
constraints issues were also discussed. 相似文献

This article reports on a study that investigated a professional development initiative in Australia to address a decline
in reading comprehension scores in the middle and upper years of Primary school. It describes the professional learning journey
of a middle primary teacher and his literacy coach over a period of 12 months as they worked to improve the teacher’s knowledge
and skills to explicitly teach reading comprehension. A series of classroom observations and interviews at the beginning,
middle and end of the school year were analysed for the kinds of reading skills taught and the nature of the instruction.
The data suggest that there were significant changes in the teacher’s pedagogical repertoires and practices and an observed
improvement in the student’s understandings of different comprehension knowledge, skills and strategies. 相似文献

Worldwide proliferation of pedagogical innovations creates expanding potential in the field of science education. While some
teachers effectively improve students’ scientific learning, others struggle to achieve desirable student outcomes. This study
explores a Taiwanese science teacher’s ability to effectively enhance her students’ science learning. The authors visited
a Taipei city primary school class taught by an experienced science teacher during a 4-week unit on astronomy, with a total
of eight, 90-minute periods. Research methods employed in this study included video capture of each class as well as reflective
interviews with the instructor, eliciting the teacher’s reflection upon both her pedagogical choices and the perceived results
of these choices. We report that the teacher successfully teaches science by creatively diverging from culturally generated
educational expectations. Although the pedagogical techniques and ideas enumerated in the study are relevant specifically
to Taiwan, creative cultural divergence might be replicated to improve science teaching worldwide. 相似文献

In this article, we present a case study of a beginning science teacher’s year-long action research project, during which
she developed a meaningful grasp of learning from practice. Wendy was a participant in the middle grade science program designed
for career changers from science professions who had moved to teaching middle grade science. An extended action research experience
in the second year of induction proved valuable to her in learning how to modify her teaching to reach her goal, using evidence
of student learning as her guide. This article closes with reflections on the value of extended action research within science
teacher preparation, particularly early in one’s career, and explores the promise for ongoing practice-based professional
development throughout a teacher’s career. 相似文献

We describe research carried out with a prospective secondary biology teacher, whom we shall call Miguel. The teacher’s conceptions
of the nature of science and of learning and teaching science were analyzed and compared with his classroom practice when
teaching science lessons. The data gathering procedures were interviews analyzed by means of cognitive maps and classroom
observations. The results reflected Miguel’s relativist conceptions of the nature of science that were consistent with his
constructivist orientation in learning and teaching. In the classroom, however, he followed a strategy of transmission of
external knowledge based exclusively on teacher explanations, the students being regarded as mere passive receptors of that
knowledge. Miguel’s classroom behavior was completely contrary to his conceptions, which were to reinforce the students’ alternative
ideas through debate, and not by means of teacher explanation. 相似文献

In this case study, an exemplary seventh grade science teacher’s beliefs, planning decisions, implementation, and student
reactions to her student-centered methods were examined over a 4-week unit on genetics. This situation was unique because
the teacher was new to the profession and her students had no prior experience with student-centered methods. The teacher
designed a learning environment where students were expected to take responsibility for research, but initially students felt
unsure about the tasks they were assigned and sought out more structure. As the teacher began to scaffold the material, a
balance was achieved that resulted in student engagement during the unit. Findings from the case study can provide teacher
educators with factors promoting skillful implementation of student-centered classrooms. 相似文献

Research shows that minority students continue to fail in the Taiwan public school system. That failure has sharply focused
on the urgent need for teachers with the skills to work effectively with minority students. The purpose of this study is to
investigate the experiences of an exemplary Taiwanese teacher who teach Indigenous students and to obtain insights about teaching
Indigenous students. Four themes can be drawn from the teacher’s beliefs and knowledge about educating Indigenous students
and her efforts on behalf of that cause. The themes are to adapt teaching to students’ learning needs, to believe in their
learning ability, to provide curriculum in context, and establish caring relationships with students. The implications for
teaching practices and teacher education are provided. 相似文献

The aim of this article is to make a close case study of one teacher’s teaching in relation to established traditions within
science education in Sweden. The teacher’s manner of teaching is analysed with the help of an epistemological move analysis.
The moves made by the teacher are then compared in a context of educational philosophy and selective tradition. In the analyses
the focus is to study the process of teaching and learning in action in institutionalised and socially shared practices. The
empirical material consists of video recordings of four lessons with the same group of students and the same teacher. The
students are all in Year 7 in a Swedish 9-year compulsory school. During these lessons the students work with a subject area
called “Properties of materials”. The results show that the teacher makes a number of different moves with regard to how to
proceed and come to a conclusion about what the substances are. Many of these moves are special in that they indicate that
the students need to be able to handle the procedural level of school science. These moves do not deal directly with the knowledge
production process, but with methodological aspects. The function of the moves turns the students’ attention from one source
of knowledge to another. The moves are aimed at helping the students to help themselves, since it is through their own activity
and their own thinking that learning takes place. This is characteristic in the teacher’s manner of teaching. When compared
in a context of educational philosophy, this manner of teaching has similarities with progressentialism; a mixture of essentialism
and progressivism. This educational philosophy is a central aspect of what is called the academic tradition—a selective tradition
common in science education in Sweden between 1960 and 1990. 相似文献

The purpose of this case-study is to narrate a secondary science teacher’s experience of his professional development (PD)
education and training in innovative technologies (IT) in the context of engaging students in environmental research projects
The sources from which the narrative is derived include (1) the science teacher’s reflective reports during three summer institute
programs and (2) the science teacher’s reflective reports while subsequently engaging students in IT-embedded environmental
research projects in his classroom. The science teacher’s explanations for changes in students’ perception of their IT fluency
illuminate his personal narrative. The science teacher attributed his growth and significant changes in students’ perceptions
of their IT fluency to the following mechanisms: (a) a personal commitment to developing his own and his students’ IT abilities
in the context of doing environmental research projects, and (b) an increase in class time devoted to science education due
to school-time scheduling policy. The study implies that immersive professional development opportunities have the potential
to produce significant increases in students’ perceptions of their IT fluency. 相似文献

The research area of teacher narrative inquiry has identified links between the personal and professional identities of teachers.
Although teacher narrative inquiry takes narrative texts as its data, insufficient attention has been given to the functions
of narratives as forms of discourse that are utilized in the construction of identity. In the present study, the concept of
narrative identity guided the analysis of a Chicana teacher’s personal experience narratives. The analysis of six narratives
told during interviews conducted across a year’s time examined how the voices in the narratives, communicated through reported
speech, represented the relational, discursive, and ideological social worlds within which the Chicana teacher’s occupational
identity was shaped. The reported speech in the Chicana teacher’s narratives quoted the voices of significant Others, such
as her family members and the parents of her students. The Chicana teacher’s narratives crafted her response to the tensions
and challenges that these voices represented to her emerging occupational identity as a bilingual education teacher. In her
narratives, the Chicana teacher also constructed continuity across the distinct phases of her occupational identity as a bilingual
teacher that included transitions from college student, to novice bilingual teacher, to experienced bilingual teacher.

Case-based learning has long been used to bring students into contact with the complexity of real-world situations. Despite
this popularity and considerable history, research into how case analysis can support future problem-solving has been limited.
The study reported in this paper investigated learners’ understanding of multimedia instructional design and development derived
from the analysis of two richly detailed cases, and how this understanding then supported learners in their own design projects.
A qualitative case study approach was used to follow a class of Masters students engaged in a technology-supported, case-based
learning environment. Student work from case analysis, group project and reflective tasks was the key data source, complemented
by interviews with students and their instructor, observations of class meetings, and the collection of online discussion
list records and electronic resource files. The study found that the case analysis task raised learners’ awareness of design
approaches and project management strategies, and that discussion and reflection play critical roles in developing students’
understanding. The study also highlighted some limitations of the case approach, suggesting the need for strategies that support
learners’ thinking and reasoning. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the debate about how to tackle the issue of ‘the teacher in the teaching/learning
process’, and to propose a methodology for analysing the teacher’s activity in the classroom, based on concepts used in the
fields of the didactics of mathematics as well as in cognitive ergonomics. This methodology studies the mathematical activity
the teacher organises for students during classroom sessions and the way he manages1 the relationship between students and mathematical tasks in two approaches: a didactical one [Robert, A., Recherches en Didactique
des Mathématiques 21(1/2), 2001, 7–56] and a psychological one [Rogalski, J., Recherches en Didactique des Mathématiques 23(3),
2003, 343–388]. Articulating the two perspectives permits a twofold analysis of the classroom session dynamics: the “cognitive
route” students are engaged in—through teacher’s decisions—and the mediation of the teacher for controlling students’ involvement
in the process of acquiring the mathematical concepts being taught. The authors present an example of this cross-analysis
of mathematics teachers’ activity, based on the observation of a lesson composed of exercises given to 10th grade students
in a French ‘ordinary’ classroom. Each author made an analysis from her viewpoint, the results are confronted and two types
of inferences are made: one on potential students’ learning and another on the freedom of action the teacher may have to modify
his activity. The paper also places this study in the context of previous contributions made by others in the same field. 相似文献

This study investigated Korean and foreign students’ perception of the teacher’s role in multicultural online learning environments
in Korea. On the basis of a literature review, a survey questionnaire was developed and piloted with 248 university students
in Korea. The questionnaire was subsequently modified on the basis of the results of the pilot study, and a final 20-item
questionnaire was constructed. Three hundred and eighty-four university students participated in the main study. Exploratory
factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used for statistical analyses. The results indicated that
students have a particular perception of the teacher’s role in a multicultural online learning environment. Five different
types of teacher’s roles—pedagogical, managerial, technical, affective, and differentiating—were identified. The teacher’s
affective and differentiating roles, which were not identified as crucial in previous research, were found to be significant
roles for both Korean and foreign students. 相似文献

The present study builds on research that indicates that teachers play a key role in promoting those interactional behaviours
that challenge children’s thinking and scaffold their learning. It does this by seeking to determine whether teachers who
implement cooperative learning and receive training in explicit strategic questioning strategies demonstrate more verbal behaviours
that mediate children’s learning than teachers who implement cooperative learning only. The study also sought to determine
whether students who receive training in explicit questioning strategies demonstrate more explanatory behaviour than their
untrained peers, and, as a consequence, do these same students demonstrate more advanced reasoning and problem-solving skills
on follow-up reasoning and problem-solving tasks. The study involved 31 teachers in two conditions, the cooperative + strategic
questioning condition and the cooperative condition, and two groups of students from each teacher’s classroom. The results
show that the teachers in the cooperative + strategic questioning condition used significantly more mediating behaviours than
their peers in the cooperative condition. The study also showed that the children in these teachers’ classes engaged in more
elaboration and obtained significantly higher scores on the follow-up reasoning and problem-solving tasks. The study demonstrates
the importance of explicitly teaching strategic questioning strategies to children during cooperative learning. 相似文献

Collaborating closely with a tenth-grade science teacher, we designed a Web-Based Learning Environment (Web-LE) to improve
the students’ motivation to learn science. Factors believed to enhance intrinsic motivation (challenge, control, curiosity,
and fantasy) were integrated into the instructional design of the Web-based learning tool. The Web-LE was implemented in the
teacher’s tenth-grade classroom as a three-day student-centered learning activity. Data collection methods included individual
student interviews, teacher interviews, motivation questionnaires, and observations. This study revealed multiple forms of
evidence that the Web-LE and the associated learning activity improved students’ motivation. This study illustrates the benefits
of educational researchers working closely with teachers using design-based research methods to successfully solve instructional
problems and identify reusable design principles. Design principles for the integration of intrinsic motivation factors into
the development of similar Web-LEs are presented as well as directions for future research. 相似文献

Current research indicates that students with enhanced knowledge networks are more effective in learning science content and
applying higher order thinking skills in open-ended inquiry learning. This research examined teacher implementation of a novel
teaching strategy called “web diagramming,” a form of network mapping, in a secondary school earth science class. We report
evidence for student improvement in knowledge networking, questionnaire-based reports by the students on the merits of web
diagramming in terms of interest and usefulness, and information on the collaborating teacher’s perceptions of the process
of implementation, including implications for teacher education. This is among the first reports that teachers can be provided
with strategies to enhance student knowledge networking capacity, especially for those students whose initial networking scores
are among the lowest. 相似文献
