This article explores the impact of quality assurance and enhancement initiatives on teacher identities in higher education. Data from an interview-based study of a research-led institution in the United Kingdom are drawn upon to consider the implications of quality – for example, whether it has captured the inner assumptive worlds of higher educators (and supplanted their own understandings of quality) or whether it has opened up new subject positions and possibilities for change. I focus on a particular group of people within the article – those who have demonstrated an interest in higher education teaching by participating in professional development programmes. Such programmes have proliferated in the light of the quality movement whilst offering exposure to ‘educationalist’ discourses. Contextualising the work through previous critical higher education research, I consider the group’s perceptions of quality initiatives and the construction of their teaching identities within a research-led institution.  相似文献

The notion of flow of a proof encapsulates mathematical, didactical, and contextual aspects of proof presentation. A proof may have different flows, depending on the lecturer’s choices regarding its presentation. Adopting Perelman’s New Rhetoric (PNR) as a theoretical framework, we designed methods to assess aspects of the flow of a proof. We present a case study from a Number Theory class at the beginning undergraduate level, focusing on an intervention concerning one lesson given in two consecutive years. The intervention consisted of a discussion with the lecturer about findings from Year-1 and potential changes in the flow of the proof before the Year-2 lesson. We analyze two aspects of the flow of the proof: the scope and organization of the argumentation and the presence (in the PNR sense) of different elements. Our analysis revealed that the intervention caused global and local changes in the flow and that PNR enables us to capture these changes.  相似文献

Eight- to 12-month-olds might make A-not-B errors, knowing the object is in B but searching at A because of ancillary (attention, inhibitory, or motor memory) deficits, or they might genuinely believe the object is in A (conceptual deficit). This study examined how diligently infants searched for a hidden object they never found. An object was placed in A twice, and then in B. In a different task the object was placed beside A twice, and then in B. Infants made more A-not-B errors in the former task, and perseverating infants searched diligently in A rather than in B. Infants seemed to believe the object was in A, suggesting that both a conceptual deficit and ancillary deficits account for A-not-B errors.  相似文献

The use of the 'Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education' (CASE) intervention programme was explored in Malawi to see if the critical period for cognitive transition from concrete operations to formal operations at 12-14 years of age actually exists. The older pupils (16-17 years of age) in secondary school classes in Malawi made similar cognitive gains to younger English pupils after being taught CASE for 2 years. This was taken to suggest that the critical period does not exist. However, in Malawi, girls, who are on average a year younger than boys in the same class, and older boys, had lower academic achievement than younger boys. The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a nonlinear system that is hard to model by conventional methods. So far,most existing models are based on conversion laws,which are too complicated to be applied to design a control system. To facilitate a valid control strategy design,this paper tries to avoid the internal complexities and presents a modelling study of SOFC per-formance by using a radial basis function (RBF) neural network based on a genetic algorithm (GA). During the process of mod-elling,the GA aims to optimize the parameters of RBF neural networks and the optimum values are regarded as the initial values of the RBF neural network parameters. The validity and accuracy of modelling are tested by simulations,whose results reveal that it is feasible to establish the model of SOFC stack by using RBF neural networks identification based on the GA. Furthermore,it is possible to design an online controller of a SOFC stack based on this GA-RBF neural network identification model.  相似文献

In this mixed-methods study, we investigated how doctoral students used asynchronous online discussions that were added to a face-to-face research methods course. We focused specifically on what sociocognitive tools the students used and what they thought about the value of the online discussions for their learning. Our data included three online whole-class discussions from the course and students’ self-evaluations, which they completed three times during the semester. Our findings support the usefulness of online discussions in providing a site where students could draw on a rich repertoire of tools and strategies as well as on the knowledge of others to enhance their thinking and understanding of theory and research.  相似文献

The present study focuses on student teachers as a prospective special resource in the prevention of school bullying in the course of their future professional careers. Special attention is paid to the influence the respondents' own childhood experiences of bullying may have in this regard. To investigate this question, we assessed the respondents' estimations of the level of empathy they felt towards the victims of bullying, the degree of effort they made to prevent bullying, and their ability to identify it. Further, an attempt to assess the long-term consequences of bullying was made, using two different communicative indices: the willingness to communicate and self-perceived communication competence. It is suggested that teachers' own experiences of victimization may enhance their ability to communicate effectively when fighting against bullying at school.  相似文献

Besides three dimensionless numbers, i. e., the impact function I, the geometry function of projectile N and the dimensionless thickness of concrete target X, which are employed to predict the ballistic performance of perforation of concrete slabs, the reinforcement ratio Ps of concrete and the tensile strength fs of reinforcing bars are considered as the other main factors influencing the perforation process. Simpler solutions of ballistic performances of normal perforation of reinforced concrete slabs are formulated.
