The inclusion of students with disabilities at the university is a relatively new occurrence in the field of special education. Although legislation in the United States has supported the acceptance of students with disabilities at the post-secondary level, it has only provided minimal support with the emphasis on the learner rather than the curriculum. Now we are looking for multiple ways for students to access learning and demonstrate mastery. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is currently seen as a means to reconceptionalize curriculum. This study examines the experience of four professors and their effort to use a Classroom Performance System (CPS) as part of reformatting their courses using UDL. The Center for Applied Special Technology, CAST (2001) states that the goal of Universal Design for Learning is to develop teaching methods that enable all students with diverse learning needs, including those with disabilities and cultural differences, to have equal access to classroom curriculum. This paradigm shift echoes the move in special education from a deficit model to a minority rights model put forward by Hahn (1989), and which is the basis of inclusive educational philosophy. Together inclusion and UDL create learning environments that strive to serve all students. This research describes the implementation of clickers as part of the CPS program in college courses in a special education teacher preparation program. The case study demonstrates how technology can provide access for all learners with positive outcomes such as increased participation and application of knowledge. It also illustrates some of the difficulties in making this pedagogical paradigm shift particularly in the use of technology, and the value of overcoming the existing barriers in place.  相似文献

The rapid development of ICT (information technology and communication) in the last two decades has changed society substantially as a whole. For higher education institutions, the external environment pressure to incorporate ICT in their educational and administrative processes has forced them to invest in resources for infrastructure and training. In addition, teachers have found that they can use technology in their teaching, but lack of full knowledge of how to use it effectively from a pedagogical point of view. The incorporation of new education modalities depends largely on the contextual variables prevailing in the institution and teachers. In UABC (Autonomous University of Baja California), the early days of online education go hack to 1996, so the study period was from 1996 to 2009. An online survey was designed to fmd out the teachers' backgrounds and involvement in online education, their experience as online teachers, and the tools and practices used. Of 97 teachers who were identified with some experience in online teaching, 70% responded to the Survey (68). It was found that the highest percentage (33%) of teachers who responded the survey started teaching online between 2003 and 2006. 56% of teachers have been teaching between one and five online courses. On the other hand, most teachers recognized that 30%-79% of the content of their courses were online based. The most popular learning management system used is moodle followed by blackboard in teachers' preference. In general, teachers expressed using the three main communication tools of online education: forums, chat and e-mail, favoring the use of e-mail. The communication slrategies teachers often use in their courses promoted student-student and student-teacher interaction. In their evaluation strategies, most said that they used self-assessment, rubrics and to a lesser extent online exams and co-evaluation. The results show that most teachers who have been involved in online education in UABC campus have expressed havi  相似文献

A Model of Teaching and Learning Online in Asian Context   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Online teaching and learning practices in Asian universities are different from that in western universities. Western universities give emphasis on student-student interaction for learning. Online courses offered by most Asian universities are a kind of mixed mode that comprised simultaneous face-to-face tutorials and online interaction facility. In this situation most students use the online facility to collect resources and to contact their teachers. The quantity of student-student interaction was sporadic in many courses. So research is needed to improve the situation and create an environment for students where they can learn what peer group interaction is and practice it. This paper has presented for Asian universities. Possible barriers in teaching and learning have been considered to develop the model. a model of teaching and learning online situations in Asia and students'abilities  相似文献

While the majority of nonnative speaker English teachers teach alongside NS teachers, research on the role of native speaker English teachers in China’s teaching context and the attitudes of university students towards them have been rarely conducted. This essay discusses the implications of cultural differences for the language classroom, and the different cultures of learning with regard to language teaching and learning in China and the Wes.The conclusion suggests that it is of great importance to have a good sense of cultural awareness and an open mind for cultural interactions,in order to benefit both language learners and native speaker teachers in the cross-cultural classroom.  相似文献

The results of a great deal of research have suggested that language learning strategies can be taught and that instructing learning strategies and integrating them into regular instruction can greatly facilitate the learning of a second/foreign language. The aim of this article is to draw the readers’ attention to strategic teaching that should be introduced in the foreign language classroom in order to meet the demands of contemporary language education. In particular, it points to the necessity that teachers should change their attitudes towards the roles they play in the classroom to become truly responsible for their learning.  相似文献

Now that the readiness of students in Nigeria higher institutions regarding e-learning have been established in a previous work (Awoleye & Siyanbola, 2007) there is also a need for evaluation of teachers' skills vis-a-vis their preparedness towards online teaching. This work therefore measured both technical and attitudinal capacity (Pillay, et al., 2006) of the teachers across the institution types (the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of education). In the overall, intensity of computer access is better than Internet access in all the institution types and the intensity of Intemet access is better than personal office connectivity. Although there are varied levels of access relative to institution types, Nigerian university teachers have better access to computer (98.4% of all respondents) and the Internet (94.8% of all respondents) than their counterparts in the polytechnics and colleges of education. Furthermore, computer access is better in the polytechnics (96.4%) than in the Colleges of Education (87.7%). Further measurement with bias for age on teachers' technical proficiencies revealed that there would be no threat for continuity if online teaching were to be adopted. The research further showed that after the passage (which may be due to retirement) of the teachers who are over 50 years old, there are teachers between 41-50 years who will take over, thereby removing the burden of succession. Based on a number of issues identified, the research suggests some useful policy directions, which wilt enhance the use of computer and the Internet to facilitate teaching and learning in the institutions.  相似文献

The role of textbooks,as one important channel between teachers and students, has always aroused scholars’interests, but what indeed are the roles of textbook for students and teachers? This paper aims to evaluate a listening textbook that is used by English major university students in China.Three research questions are proposed which are:(1) What are the students’per ceptions about the listening textbook? (2) What are the teachers’opinions about the listening textbook? (3) To what extent do students and teachers perceptions match? In order to answer these three research questions, questionnaires were designed for both students and teachers to obtain the data. This study is supported both qualitatively and quantitatively. The data of this research suggested that both students and teachers have found advantages of this listening textbook, which they may find helpful for their learning and teaching, but they are also not satisfied with some aspects of the textbook, which they think need further improvement. The students’and teachers’opinions to some extent have reached some agreement about the textbook, but students may not be so enthusiastic about the textbook, while the teachers may show much reliance on the text book. This study has its limitations, but it also provides some insights for teachers and textbook writers.  相似文献

The early immigrants of American were English Puritans who settled down in northeast part. Rough as the environment was, they believed that it could purify their mind. From 1607 to 1892, frontiers were pushed further west. They had been looking for a land of rich resources as well as a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they were in search for a better life. So individualism, self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values closely associated with the frontier heritage of American. The greatness that the frontiers achieved, in a way, is due to their strong religions, which is so powerful that is beyond our understanding. Who know what miracles, they can achieve. There is a good example to prove this. It is rehgion that Moses led the Israelites out of their bondage in Egypt, and led the children of Israel out of the Egypt.  相似文献

Learner autonomy is considered as one of the key educational goals in all the countries of the world since 1980s.In China, developing learner autonomy is particularly emphasized in College English Curriculum Requirements. Some researches have been made on developing learner autonomy, which seem to prove that the training of language learning strategies helps to develop learner autonomy. But because the traditional teaching method has been dominant in universities, college students,in particular art majors are passive and lose interests in English.Consequently,English teaching method must be reformed and learn er autonomy must be developed. In the relevant researches on learning strategy training and the development of learner autono my,the subjects are not involved in art majors. So the author tries to make a research in the field by combining with her teaching experience.Developing learner autonomy in art majors through the training of metacognitive strategies may lay the basis for their future learning and development, which is important for the college English teaching of art majors.Key wrods:learner autonomy;art majors;metacognitive strategy training  相似文献

The purpose of the research is to find out which job skills Greek graduate students of high school and their parents consider as important qualifications for the youngsters' entry into the active working life with regard to their gender. The sample, consisting of 215 graduate students of high school and their parents (210), evaluated the importance they think the examined job skills have for the students' future entry into the labor market and also the extend to which the youngsters possess these skills. Results have shown that there were significant differences between students' and their parents' opinions with regard to gender concerning job skills that are considered as important for finding a job. This was also confirmed by the factor analysis applied. Significant gender differences were also found concerning the degree to which teenagers possess the examined skills. In concluding, male young students and their fathers believe that skills related to self-management, self-discipline and the use of technological means are more important for finding a job, whilst female young students and their mothers outline a more positive and social profile, confirming typical and stereotypical attitudes and vocational choices.  相似文献

Now more than ever teachers and those in teacher training positions are being confronted with the prevalence of multicultural and multilingual classroom environments. Along with this presence, they also face international and national policies which call for effective and successful strategy building for coping with diverse settings. This appeal often manifests with an inability on the teacher's part to effectively facilitate these multicultural classrooms, as well as an inability on the students' part to interact and finally contribute to a larger national and global goal of intercultural cooperation. A growing body of research suggests that as those in the field of teaching and teacher education seek to improve classroom techniques, curricula, and teaching practice in the area of diversity they continue to face disparaging and almost disillusioning results. What were traditionally seen as venues in dealing with issues in multiculturalism and diversity through multicultural education have been left unanswered? The purpose of this article thus seeks to explore the pedagogical concept of intercultural education as a way to suggest discourse of dealing with the challenges to diversity in the classroom.  相似文献

The Internet penetrates deeply into the everyday life due to the availability of broadband networks and mobile devices. The widespread of the Internet, along with the development of innovative services, social networking, and tools (known as Web 2.0), gives rise to the phenomenon of the digital world. A university striving not to be "an ivory tower" should meet the needs of the "Net Generation", prepare the graduates for professional work and life in the digital world and comply with the social demand for providing lifelong learning services, especially, in the vulnerable crisis times. MESI (Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics, and lnformatics) started implementing ICTs (information and communication technologies) both in the academic and administrative processes more than 15 years ago. Today, its unified e-learning environment allows rendering educational services to students of all levels and forms (both on-campus and off-campus) and 24 × 7 × 365 support (24 hours-7 days in a week-365 days in a year). Information system for administration comprises electronic document management systems, students' records, and the results of their individual learning activities for the current, interim, and final assessment. The university management system empowers centralized management of its Moscow headquarters and branches, as well as regulation of teaching/learning process. Long-term development of education in Russia is directly dependent on large-scale introduction of e-learning tools, design and implementation of new methods of organization of educational process on its base, creating and using an appropriate electronic teaching and learning practices, and new approaches to the management of the education system and educational institutions.  相似文献

It is found in the study that there is a big difference concerning the overall frequency of Do with Hong Kong students using much more DO in their writings than native speakers.Besides,Hong Kong university students tend to overuse the verbal operator DO,which is contrary to Qi Yan’s study(2006).At the same time, they also misuse Do;When Do is used as de-lexical verb,Hong Kong students share the same characteristics with the study of Fu zhuqin(2006),that is,they allow more freedom to collocate with more Nouns, some of which are inappropriate collocates in native English. The potential reasons for these problems might be illustrated as overgeneralization,mother-tongue interference, and lack of vocabulary etc.Based on the findings, the paper presents two pedagogical implications about vocabulary teaching and learning:the content of vocabulary teaching should be extended and enriched, and the corpus-based vocabulary teaching methodology should be integrated into class practices.  相似文献

Web-based application has been complained a lot because of some serious problems, such as the limitations of browsers, security problems and the lack of offline access. To solve these, online applications are set to go offline and free from the browser. Some organization has already gain achievements on this area. As the first mover, Google is expected to use Google Gears to offer offline functionality for web applications, and Firefox3.0 are expected to support it. Microsoft’s Silverlight and Adobe’s Air technologies allow online applications to run independently of the browser. (Nuttal, 2007) Organizations willing to launch this technology should not only pay attention on the SWOT of this technology itself, but also take a look of their information and business strategies and figure out the right way they utilize this technology. Therefore they need to take advantage of the strengths and opportunities to meet their business strategies and achieve objectives.  相似文献

Implementation of information and communication technologies as well as emersion of new user interfaces and web 2.0 technologies changes the way of education system, the way of living and business transactions in general. The way we communicate, operate, produce and live is also changing. In accordance with it, the systems of education change from traditional to modern. The following changes occur: from content delivery to knowledge production, from transfer of knowledge from teachers to students towards encouragement of development and construction of knowledge, from courses and programs changing to the adaptation of the study environment, from the faculty professionalism to the quality of teaching and student learning and the early involvement of students in research work and projects. These occurring changes also affect the students' and professors' mobility. Here, the word "mobility" represents not only the student exchange programs and the easier transitions from one's home university to a foreign one, but also the way professors conduct their classes. With the development of certain software, students' class attendance no longer represents an important factor, as they can now learn from distance using the mentioned software, taking the learning process one step further. In order for above-mentioned changes to occur, the use of e-learning and the development of new tools are almost mandatory. With this in mind, the goal of this paper is to analyze quantitatively the changes that are occurring almost every day that affect the students' learning and the professors' teaching methods.  相似文献
