This article examines the American-mediated myth of ‘new China’ spanning from the Chinese Revolution in 1911 to the American recognition of the Chinese Republic in 1913, in an effort to understand the complicated relations between news discourse, cultural issues and foreign relations in this particular historical context. The Chinese Revolution, overthrowing a deep-rooted feudalism and establishing an Americanized republican government, appealed to American sentiments of religious sympathy and ethnocentrism during the Progressive Era. The media myth of ‘new China’ was not only a significant part of discourses which enhanced American identity and nationalism, but also acted as the cognitive context and a determinant reason in the political discourse towards recognizing China. 相似文献

Connect is a column that will explore opportunities for libraries to foster, build, and strategically expand connections in the many forms they take. It is true that unifying metaphors, such as connect, have their limitations and can be prone to simplification or generalization, but they can also serve a useful purpose. The idea of connecting has a tangible sense beyond the figurative. It is for this reason I feel that connect works well as a rubric for organizing our thoughts regarding the present state of library services within the changing horizon of academia. It is also why I think that the concept makes a fruitful header for a column dedicated to such exploration. This first article sets the broader stage for the idea of connections, presenting a wider breadth and sampling of views, concepts, and possible issues. Future articles will explore in greater depth topics of relevance to academic libraries that highlight successful connections. 相似文献

To assess future priorities for cultural studies, this essay returns to the later writings of Raymond Williams, in particular his concerns about “new conformism.” It is argued that today we face comparable analytical challenges in which the pressures of institutionalization, and a strain of ahistoricism, have produced a “weak materialism” in contemporary cultural critique. The essay recommends a flexible and context-driven navigation of the current dominant tendencies toward micro-recuperative and macro-epistemological analysis, and proposes that this flexibility is the preferred mode of assuring that the dynamism of culture is captured by our critical methods. 相似文献

Abstract The Downtown Collection's holdings expansively redefine traditional archival models enabling us to rethink key elements of archival theory, methodology, and practice. Further, its commitment to documenting non-traditional subject matter and maintaining dynamic relationships with artists, donors, scholars and the public mirrors the post-structural influence that is felt in the collection. Ultimately, the Collection's efforts to open up the content of its subject-the Downtown New York scene from 1975 to the present-as well as its holdings and follow the material's lead in pushing the limits of library structures, produces an expanded archival model that houses rich forms of material, better intellectual access, and even, for some, social activism. 相似文献

In this research, we performed radiographic experiments exploiting polychromatic phase-contrast imaging, a method for contrast enhancement in transmitted neutron beams by measuring a sample made with a homogeneous material but exhibiting a different microstructure induced by mechanical actions. This qualitative case study, based on the principles of grounded theory, develops a holistic business model for media outlets by investigating the organizational structure and corporate culture of a unique agricultural radio station that operated successfully for over 60 years. It examines the station in the context of its founding era and determines the process used to create this survivor.
