AbstractThe creation and the maintenance of three (name, title and subject headings) authority files in the Central Library of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, is discussed. The reasons for establishing bilingual (Greek and English) authority files are explained, and the necessary modifications of the AACR2 Rules, which were imperative for the establishment of bilingual headings in the authority files, are represented. The benefits of an OPAC that uses bilingual authority files, which allow one to search in two languages, are described. 相似文献

Study findings suggest that access to Spanish language adult fiction through bilingual records in the OPAC is mutually beneficial for RA librarians and patrons. Subject access depends on local cataloging policies regarding enhancements for bibliographic records and catalogers' Spanish language proficiencies. Without incentives to enhance bibliographic records, local bilingual cataloging will continue but may not be shared. Reader advisory can be improved with the multicultural RA tools, multilingual RA websites, incentives to libraries for enhancements to non‐English records, and linking individual bibliographic records in OPACS to reviews and comments for titles in languages other than English. 相似文献

This is a review of the literature and a selective, annotated bibliography on serials automation from 1976 to 1984 with an emphasis on recent English language publications. The bibliography is subdivided by topic: bibliographies; reviews and collections; bibliographic control, including ISBD(S), ISDS, ISSN, NSDP, CONSER, and AACR2; serials control, including chcck-in, claiming, binding and routing; systems and vendors; standards; union catalogs; fiscal control, and the organization of serials work. The selection of 150 citations highlights important events and trends and describes some lesser known developments. 全国图书馆联合编目中心的书目数据存在着部分分类号和主题词错误、责任方式错误等质量问题。这些质量问题的产生原因是没有统一的著录细则、数据监控不完善、数据质量把关不严、编目员和校对员的综合素质和职业水平良莠不齐。全国图书馆联合编目中心应采取如下策略提高数据质量:制定统一的中文图书机读目录数据处理细则;建立奖惩制度,加强对成员馆的质量监控;培养优秀的编目员、校对员,加强审校机制;建立月结报送制度,定期向联编中心提交反馈的数据质量问题。 相似文献

After moving for the past several years toward internetwork cooperation, the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and its two competitors, the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) and the Western Library Network (WLN), have entered into an agreement with one another and with the Library of Congress to implement the Linked Systems Project. Its goal is the eventual creation of a single bibliographic network. Some of OCLC's regional networks are also cooperating in order to improve service to their members, and the CONSER Program has recently expanded its levels of participation. All of these dcvclopments should have a positive impact on serials control. Increasing levels of automation in the treatment of serials should lead to increased efficiency in serials proccdures. 相似文献

Serials represent a growing proportion of published literature and budget allocations. Since serials frequently contain the most current information and latest reports of research activity, they both generate many reference questions and supply the answers. Due to the continuing and changing nature of serials, their records are more difficult to interpret than are monograph records. The philosophy underlying the creation of serial records, the variations in serial cataloging rules, and the effects of automation partially explain what appears in our catalogs. A review of the essential elements in serial bibliographic records accents the unique characteristics of serials and the problems encountered in trying to create records that are consistent and intelligible. 相似文献

Whether or not uniform titles serve any useful purpose has been debated almost since their implementation in 1981 with the adoption of AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. Second Edihon). The problems posed by a separate bibliographic record for each physical manifestation of the same intellectual work (e.g., original, reprint, microfilm) apply to some extent to all categories of material, but present special problems for union lists of serials. This article discusses these two problem areas of serials cataloging. A proposed solution to the multiple versions dilemma is also briefly discussed. 相似文献

Up to 1976, serials automation had progressed to a point where the activities of the bibliographic networks was increasingly important, and the CONSER project had been launched. However, most union lists of serials were still being compiled manually, and the computers used for library applications consisted primarily of (expensive) mainframe computers. Several events took place in 1976: the Library of Congress received a grant for CONSER 11; OCLC's serials check-in system became available; NCLIS established a Task Force on a National Periodicals System; and the first major revision of the copyright law was passed. This article discusses the progress made or the changes that have occurred since 1976 in: CONSER, the bibliographic networks, union lists of serials, stand-alone systems, electronic mail, full text services, copyright, and organizations providing services involving serials. 相似文献

The 2005 revision of Library Congress Rule Interpretation 22.17, allowing the addition of death dates to personal name headings with open dates, had a significant impact on the maintenance of bibliographic records. The decision not to include open date forms as “see from” fields in revised authority records destined catalog maintenance staff to higher levels of manual review and editing. At Kent State University this prompted a search for better options and resulted in the creation of a shadow authority file intended solely for automated “flipping” of open date headings to the new forms. The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, R&D arm of the National Library of Medicine, has had under development a minicomputer based INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM (ILS). ILS Version 1.0 has recently become operational and supports modules for master bibliographic file (MBF) creation and processing, circulation control, and serials check-in. A major emphasis in the design of the ILS has been on collection management and control. The present implementation supports "intelligently" assigned bar-codes for both monographs and serials from the MBF. The barcodes contain sufficient information about each item to provide efficient processing and allow easy use of portable devices for inventory control. In addition, unique functions have been included to allow identification of temporary item locations as well as to allow the compilation of statistics on items removed from the shelf but not circulated. The potential impact of these features on collection management will be discussed. 相似文献

Historically, serials departments have been organized in diverse ways. The integrated serials department arrangement, including all serials functions, facilitates bibliographic control, provides effective service to the library user and promotes better communication. This study maintains the need for the integrated central serials department, with the University of Oklahoma Libraries Serials Department used as an example.
