ABSTRACTIn 2006, the University of California launched a Cooperative Online Serials Program (CONSER) Funnel. It paved the way for serials catalogers across UC libraries to work with CONSER records in the OCLC WorldCat database. The first funnel dealing with bibliographic records in a decentralized approach in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's history, it has had significant impact locally and nationally. The UC Davis Library was one of the early participants. Valerie Bross was instrumental in its establishment and implementation. This article presents the view from a participating library's standpoint and complements Valerie's article which was published here in 2010. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In October 1997, the CONSER Program will join the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). Hirons and Schottlaender discuss the developments that led up to the consolidation, the new vision for the combined program as expressed in a set of principles, and the benefits to each program. They also examine the potential for change in CONSER and PCC inherent in the acceptance of the principles. 相似文献

Abstract The CONSER Program has been a leader in developing standards for cataloging electronic resources. Members from several CONSER institutions will discuss their experiences with the Program's interim guidelines for cataloging remote-access versions of print serials which allow the option of creating separate records for online and print versions or, alternately, of identifying the online version on the print record. Pro's and con's of each approach will be examined from the point of view of the cataloger as well as public service staff. Long-term directions will also be explored. Since the guidelines are still very much a work-in-progress, the session is designed to include input and questions from the audience. 相似文献

Summary Many aspects of electronic serials cataloging have not yet developed standard practice, or are still in transition. This article will explore some problematic issues in electronic serials cataloging first by presenting current CONSER policy in these areas and then by examining the practices of three institutions who are cataloging electronic serials. For brevity, the term “electronic serial” will be used to mean “remote access computer file serial” unless the more specific term is needed for clarity. The five topics covered in this discussion are: Access and Location Information, Multiple Versions, Definition of Electronic Serial, Bibliographic Access Points and Display of Computer File Characteristics. 相似文献

AbstractBIBCO is one of four programs in the PCC. This article summarizes the development of BIBCO and how its cataloging training program was strikingly different from the other three programs: NACO, CONSER and SACO. BIBCO grew out of the 1990–1991 recession which created widespread anxiety over the cost of original cataloging. BIBCO attempted to reduce the cost without sacrificing quality and increase record production through the use of core records. The early training emphasized the value of cooperation. PCC’s strength in this area is seen today in its partnerships and leadership in metadata initiatives such as linked data. 相似文献

The CONSER Editing Guide (CEG) gives extensive information about the nature of the CONSER Project, as well as comprehensive instructions and copious examples for content designation and input of serial records cataloged according to AACR2 and CONSER policy The reasons for creating the guide, its method of preparation. and the basis for some of the decisions reflected in it are discussed. Part II of the CEG, to a great extent, replaces the MARC Serials Editing Guide. Second CONSER Edition (MSEG); a comparison is made with the MSEG to reveal what is new and different in the CEG. The contents of the yet to be published Part I, made up of current policies and procedures as applied in the project, are summarized. 相似文献

Abstract Librarians and patrons can access many thousands of electronic journals today. Librarians who incorporate records for these journals into their OPACs will maximize the journals' access and use, but accurately tracking them can be difficult. This paper describes a commercial solution to the problem. Serials Solutions combines aggregator title lists with CONSER MARC records to improve access to these titles. This paper reviews the benefits and challenges associated with this process, and identifies several areas in which aggregators and OPAC vendors can improve the services they provide, to facilitate this process. 相似文献

Summary The published literature specific to electronic serials cataloging over the decade of the 1990s and the work of CONSER, MARBI, the ALCTS Committee to Study Serials Cataloging, and others were reviewed to identify issues and developments. The proliferation and the changing nature of e-serials were challenges to catalogers throughout the period examined. Policies and procedures were offered by CONSER and its members. Multiple versions, revising AACR2, metadata, and aggregator databases were among the issues actively discussed at the close of the decade. 相似文献

AbstractEstablishing Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Chinese Japanese Korean (CJK) NACO, BIBCO, CONSER, and SACO funnels grew out of the PCC’s strategy of engaging and inclusion of diverse membership, and the commitment of the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) to collaboration with PCC, the Library of Congress, and the American Library Association. Together, PCC CJK funnels and CEAL’s Committee on Technical Processing (CTP) have been taking leadership roles in contributing quality metadata, developing CJK-specific training programs, participating in the development of PCC policies and best practices, and engaging in international collaborations. This article discusses challenges the CJK funnels and CEAL CTP have faced and strategies taken in this ongoing collaborative endeavor. 相似文献

AbstractIn the early 2000s, the dissemination of digital information resources was overwhelming library collections. Libraries struggled to make these materials discoverable in OPACs. The PCC stepped up its priorities to develop training, standards, and procedures for addressing digital content. Two events influenced the thinking and the direction of the PCC: The Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium: Confronting the Challenges of Networked Resources (2000) and the 2004 CONSER Summit on Serials in the Digital Environment. The discussions and the priorities resulting from these events provided guidance to the PCC. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The author presents the results of the December 1998 CONSER “Survey on Providing Access to Serial Titles within Aggregator Databases.” Major findings include 71% of respondents desiring to see full-text serial titles incorporated into the online catalog and nearly 75% interested in acquiring record sets. Also included are an analysis of the numerous survey comments received, strategies toward creating the necessary records and integrating them into OPACs, examples of aggregator analytic records, and other background information on the work of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's Task Group on Journals in Aggregator Databases.1 相似文献

Abstract Many library directors and administrators spend a significant portion of their time attempting to market the library and its services. Getting patrons into the library and keeping their business is an integral part of the day-to-day management of the library. This mission, however, is not always effectively passed on to the front lines to the one group of people who face the patrons on a daily basis -the reference librarians. This article will show how the library's service points can be used as marketing tools; outline what librarians and public service staff should know about their library; and discuss ways in which reference service librarians can help further the library's marketing and public relations goals. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article discusses how a broad understanding of community engagement has influenced the conception, realization, and services of one of the most internationally lauded modern public libraries, Dokk1, opened in 2015 in Aarhus, Denmark. Leveraging the power of networking and partnerships and the engagement of citizens and stakeholders is a key component in the success of the library. Input derived from the engagement process has informed decisions and influenced planning profoundly, contributing to the library’s evolution into a significant cultural and communal hub with 1.4 million annual visits from people from all walks of life. The article examines the journey toward this achievement through the lens of the author, who has been a central actor in the decision making and planning processes leading up to Dokk1 相似文献
