Responses to the Approaches to Studying Inventory were obtained from 2,288 post-foundation students taking courses by distance learning at the Open University. A factor analysis of their subscale scores produced a solution that was commensurable with results of earlier research carried out with campus-based students. Indeed, their approaches to studying were more appropriate to the avowed aims of higher education, but this could be attributed to age differences between campus-based and distance-learning students. The approaches to studying of distance-learning students were affected by background variables such as gender, age, academic discipline and prior education, and they were more appropriate to the avowed aims of higher education than those of other students taking foundation courses by distance learning. Even when effects of background variables were taken into account, the distance-learning students' approaches to studying were related to pass rates and final grades. In particular, there was a strong negative association between reproducing orientation and academic outcome.  相似文献

Interaction and feedback on performance are essential elements of the language learning process. On a distance-learning course, since opportunities for interaction may be limited, feedback plays a crucial role in opening and maintaining a dialogue between tutors and students. Using text analysis, questionnaire and interview data, this study explores both tutor and student perspectives on the feedback offered on a distance language course. It finds that there are considerable individual differences in the feedback offered by tutors and there is also variation in the type of feedback the students want and their reported uses of it. The article suggests that more training for both tutors and students is necessary to adequately exploit feedback's potential in a distance-learning context.  相似文献

The uses of case studies of failures of technological systems are discussed, and methods for analysis are described. Starting from the simple examination of broken components in engineering, the article goes on to trace the development of systems methods for the study of accidents and large-scale disasters having technology as a major component. Methods used in two distance-learning courses are described, which employ the comparison of standard models of failure and success against the actuality of given scenarios. Details of the teaching and learning materials are set out, together with sources. Application is to aspects of design, manufacture, inspection, use and maintenance in engineering and technology management. The aim is to help engineers being educated to gain in the assurance of safety, through the study of its opposite, failure.  相似文献

Information technology (IT) has become a common component in the process of designing and delivering distance-learning courses of study. Many researchers have addressed the technical and pedagogical issues surrounding IT-enabled or IT-enhanced distance-learning systems. However, studies of the management of the student's learning experience as it is influenced by the emerging virtual organization would assist practitioners and researchers as they seek to understand the important challenges of current practice in distance-learning systems. This paper reports on the operation of a one-window approach to serving students, using the organizational structure and technological innovation of a call centre. Before the call centre was established, it was hypothesized that the call-centre approach would be well suited to routine tasks of supporting student learning. In practice, it was found that most student inquiries were indeed in the category of routine tasks and that only a small proportion of student inquiries could be categorised as uncertain events that required the specialised knowledge of the professor or other academic expert. Implications for the management of other distance learning systems are considered.  相似文献

Environmental policy-making with the goal of implementing sustainable development is finding its way to local municipalities. Several towns and cities in Europe have already produced detailed environmental programmes for their decision-makers to carry out. However, the demands can sometimes overpower personnel and their capacity to deal with rapid changes, if they are not provided with ‘target training’ or given temporary help by those familiar with these new environmental concepts. This paper discusses some of the various experiences gained in a collaboration between the City of Tampere and the environmental engineering education offered by the Tampere Institute of Technology during recent years. Joint practical and research projects at home and abroad, environmental surveys, short courses and theme days, and practical placements for both Finnish and foreign exchange students are described in this paper. It is the writer's hope that this report will encourage other educators to make similar approaches in their teaching work; to share responsibility in the community between those who know and those who want to know the way of solving some of our local and regional problems.  相似文献

Increasing enrollment in undergraduate and graduate economics courses that focus on the natural world (natural resource, environmental, energy, and mineral economics) is important for preparing a work force capable of addressing complex environmental issues. This is especially challenging for smaller universities that want to offer diverse electives in economics. This study seeks to obtain information on the effects of course attributes and student characteristics on preferences for and probabilities to enroll in economics courses offered at Michigan Technological University. A discrete-choice experiment is used to elicit 723 students’ stated preferences for eight different course attributes. A latent-class model is used to probabilistically group students into different preference classes. The cost-effective methods demonstrated in this study can be applied to any courses in any fields to inform course-level marketing efforts aimed at bolstering enrollment while addressing administrative budget constraints.  相似文献

在哈尔滨工业大学留学生本科教育全英文体系中针对机械类及土木类开设全英文工程图学课程。很大程度上改善了留学生中文水平低,难以掌握知识,通过率低下的现状。全英文课程提高了学生的学习兴趣,通过率也明显高于参加中文课程的留学生。2012—2018完成八轮授课积累了一定经验,已协助一兄弟院校建设土木类全英文授课体系。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Community colleges are actively involved in distance-learning programs in Career and Technical Education (CTE). Over 76% of community colleges offer some form of distance learning in CTE. Over the years, only a few isolated studies have compared the effectiveness of distance CTE courses to traditional face-to-face courses. Typically, the findings of previous studies indicate no significant differences between the two methods. This study was designed to address the lack of systematic studies of this question. It also examines how student motivation and learning strategies differ for campus-based and online students. Finally, it investigates how online and campus-based courses differ in terms of course interaction, content organization, student support, and transactional distance (i.e., feelings of closeness to the instructor and the program).  相似文献

Middle and secondary schools have increasingly offered distance-learning classes as a means of meeting diverse student needs and curriculum requirements while using instructional and budget resources efficiently. Little emphasis has been placed on the readiness of students to participate and succeed in these less conventional learning environments. The ill-prepared and apprehensive student may be prone to academic dishonesty. This investigation seeks to synthesize how pedagogical efforts to foster the development of self-regulated learning skills may reduce instances of cheating and plagiarism in online classes.  相似文献

Engineering education has more than 200 years of tradition in Hungary. Chemical engineers are trained at the Technical University of Budapest (TUB) and at the University of Veszprém. The curriculum of the TUB chemical engineering education is given. Undergraduate environmental engineering education is offered at the University of Miskolc, at the Janus Pannonius University in Pécs and at the University of Veszprém. Curricula of the latter two are given. The TUB has several environmental specialization opportunities for engineering students, but at present no separate undergraduate environmental engineering education is offered. Such a curriculum is now under preparation and will be introduced in 1998. Several technical colleges also offer environmental engineering education, where the duration of the training is 3 years. Postgraduate education is a very suitable form to add environmental knowledge to the existing engineering knowledge of graduate engineers. The TUB and the universities in Miskolc and Veszprém are all very active in this field.  相似文献

Abstract

Environmental education is “coming of age” at U.S. universities and colleges. Baccalaureate, master's, and PhD programs in environmental engineering, environmental science, and civil-environmental engineering are now available in U.S. colleges and schools of engineering. A rich program of research supports environmental graduate students and faculty at many engineering colleges and schools. Although specialists are trained in environmental subjects, the multiplication effect of “greening” all engineering students is nascent. Deans of leading engineering schools were surveyed to determine the level of environmental curriculum offered to nonspecialist engineering students. The purpose of the research was to provide educators with a baseline of approaches to environmental education for nonenvironmental engineering students. The survey determined the scope of environmental programs offered as special programs: minor, general education, concentration, special interest, and degree core requirement. Analysis of the survey responses and suggestions on program implementation are presented.  相似文献

Abstract

After more than 20 years of exploring liberal arts education in Chinese universities, its curriculum development has been institutionalized. Efforts to build localized curricula that fit the realities at each institution have shifted from focusing on quantity and structure to emphasizing curriculum quality assurance based on teaching evaluation by students. An empirical analysis using Fudan University’s teaching evaluation data shows that some liberal arts core courses offered by technical and engineering departments are too specialized, while some offered by social sciences and humanities and languages departments lack rigor. Student evaluations of such courses therefore tend to be low. Improving the quality of liberal arts courses can begin by examining both teaching evaluations by students and course grading, starting with the less rigorous courses for non-majors.
