In order to make effective decisions based on probability, one must be able to distinguish between the objective‐factual aspects of the decision and the subjective aspects. This study examines the hypothesis that academic studies contribute to the development of the ability to make such distinctions in day‐to‐day decision‐making. Some 940 subjects, including some holding Bachelor's degrees and others with Master's degrees in the Exact Sciences, the Social Sciences, and the Humanities, responded to a questionnaire on decision‐making situations which examined the degree of their awareness of the objective and subjective elements of decisions. It was found that the respondents made the distinction in the situations with which they were presented. A rise in academic level from the Bachelor's degree to the Master's Degree led to increased awareness of the objective aspect of decisions among scholars in the Exact Sciences and the Humanities. Holders of Master's degrees in all of the fields of specialty showed a greater awareness of the subjective aspect than did holders of Bachelor's degrees. The application of these insights in the field of education is discussed.  相似文献

On September 22, 1982, the State Council Committee on Academic Degrees issued a Circular on Further Improvement of the Master's Program. Excerpts from the circular are as follows:

In November 1981, the State Council Committee on Academic Degrees issued the (81) Academic Degree No. 019 Circular on Doing a Good Job of Awarding Masters Degrees to This Years Graduates. The leaders of the various government departments in charge and the academic-degree-conferring units and many specialists and cadres worked very hard and achieved great success. On the whole, Chinas first masters degree holders are of high quality. However, there ar problems in some cases. For instance, some units bend the rules to accommodate second-rate students. Some succumbed to personal pressures, and some compromised quality while pursuing quantity. We have to correct these mistakes now that we have experience in training this first cohort. It is hereby notified:

1. It is necessary to follow the Regulations and maintain quality. The academic degree evaluation committees of the authorized units should closely supervise these matters.  相似文献

A consortium of seven universities and two polytechnics is developing an international postgraduate degree programme consisting of course modules and directed research to train effective leaders in aerospace engineering. The programme's initial funding is a jointly awarded grant from government funding agencies in both the USA and the EU (DGXX II, European Commission, Agreement No. 98-00-USA-0010-00, US Department of Education, DUNS No. 00-743-1505). The purpose of the Masters programme is to train effective leaders for aerospace engineering development, by developing both their professional capabilities and their understanding of the operation of global markets. Course content and management structure is currently under development. This programme comprises the formation of an International Master of Science (IMS) Degree Programme in Aerospace Engineering. Under the IMS programme, qualifying students at each participating university will assemble a personalized degree programme, choosing course and project modules from among the partner universities. Approximately one-third of each student's chosen modules will be taken in overseas institutions. The IMS Degree Programme will include both coursework and research project work in aerospace engineering. Students begin the exchange programme in the year 2000, and the first degrees will be conferred in the year 2001. The project was successfully introduced to the European Forum for continuing Engineering Education in 1999 (Smrcek and Horner 1999, The 4th European Forum for Continuing Engineering Education, Trondheim, Norway).  相似文献

The action-learning-related approaches incorporated in the Adult Education and Human Resource Development Master's Degree Program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) are considered unique in their overall design. They replaced a long-established and much more traditional curriculum design in 1995. The final capstone course in the program was shifted to an action learning format, with students directly involved with real, highly complex problems in the community and elsewhere which they were expected to help clarify and resolve. The basic fabric of the Master's Degree Program was re-engineered to promote the linkage between action and reflection, the questioning of underlying assumptions, and incorporation of portfolio assessment techniques. In each course, students are now encouraged to keep learning logs, determine their own best work for the semester, and prepare a “reflective essay” indexed to their own self-assessment of critical incidents (e.g., the point at which they were most engaged or distanced from what was occurring and why). Overall evolution of the VCU program and its benefits are outlined as well as how to go about implementing such an approach.  相似文献

Reading is a communication process that is crucial to students in science. Printed text materials are the most widely used teacher aids in the classroom. But reading as a major focus of science instruction has been out of favor with the mainstream of science education since the late 1950s. Despite this, few would deny the value of reading skills in a science class. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine how the use of Newsday's Science Education Series Program affected selected ninth-grade students' comprehension of science reading material. Analysis of covariance showed that students with standardized reading and mathematics scores at least two years above grade level who were taught using newspaper science articles alone had Degrees of Reading Power posttest scores higher at the 0.05 level of significance compared to students taught using Newsday's Science Education Series Program or using only the science article's content as part of class lessons. Students with standardized reading and mathematics scores on grade level taught using Newsday's Science Education Series Program had Degrees of Reading Power posttest scores higher at the 0.01 level of significance compared to students taught by either of the other methods.  相似文献

Because of the crisis in the western European welfare state, government by itself can no longer provide the full range of social services that populations have come to take for granted. The shortfall must be complemented by an increasing variety of voluntary organizations. In order to be effective, however, such organizations as well as the more traditional service‐providing government organizations must have good leadership. As good leaders are as much trained to be good leaders as born, an efficient means must be developed for training leaders. Given the rapidity of social change, training must be provided on a permanent basis. The authors therefore propose the setting up of a European Master's Degree programme in leadership training. It would be modelled upon a distance Master's Degree programme in Educational Administration (Northern Interior Master's Programme ‐NIMB) that the University of Victoria in Canada offered in a large area of northwest Canada. Much of the course work for such a programme would be provided by distance means using new communication technologies. Universities in seven countries: England, Belgium, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, and Finland, that formed a consortium, would administer and offer this programme in which employed administrators could enroll.  相似文献

Abstract

This article briefly reviews and compares three offerings of graduate degrees via the Internet—two Master's programs in the field of Management and one Master's program in the area of Library and Information Science. Three different management degrees offered by the University of Phoenix, the Master of Arts in Management offered by The Graduate School of America, and the Master of Science in Library and Information Science offered by the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign are described according to each program's online and printed prospectus. Based on this information, the three programs are compared and evaluated. The article concludes with a “Consumer's Guide” that formulates some key questions that any potential student of these types of programs should ask before enrolling in such a program.  相似文献
