Abstract

Analyses of pigments from palettes used by J.M.W. Turner (active c.1792–c.1850) by means of microscopy, microchemical analysis, thin-layer chromatography, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are given. The occurrence of pigments in Turner's dated oil paintings and watercolours is also given, arranged by five-year periods. These findings are discussed in the context of published analyses of pigments from the first half of the nineteenth century. Turner used cobalt blue, emerald green, viridian, orange vermilion, barium chromate, chrome yellow, chrome orange and chrome scarlet within a few years of their known dates of discovery. It has become clear that Turner was using, or at least experimenting with, practically all the pigments known to be available at that time. In a few cases, in the light of these results, ideas on the availability of pigments to English artists have been revised backwards to the first known date of manufacture. Turner also possessed and used a wide range of red and yellow organic pigments, but few organic greens. The dyestuff extracted from Rubia tinctorum L. madder on an aluminiumcontaining substrate can be distinguished from the same madder on different substrates by its strong pink fluorescence in both ultraviolet and green light. The other red organic pigments (a second madder, brasilwood and cochineal dyestuffs on a range of substrates containing aluminium, copper, iron, aluminium/copper and clays) show negligible fluorescence. The red organic pigments were used in oil medium as well as watercolour, the yellows only in watercolour medium.  相似文献

A multi-analytical approach for the study of brazilwood and its lake pigments was carried out based on historically accurate reconstructions. Recipes for brazilwood lakes from the fifteenth century technical text Livro de como se fazem as cores and the Winsor & Newton nineteenth century colourman's archive were reproduced and compared. Both primary sources allowed for the successful preparation of brazilwood lake pigments with colours that vary from light pink to dark red. The main steps and ingredients for the manufacture of these pigments were common in both sources, particularly the addition of Al3+ in the form of alum, and calcium carbonate (chalk). Reconstructions revealed that the latter acts as a pH buffer and filler, controlling the pH at which the lake pigment precipitates. The main difference between the two sources is that the nineteenth century recipes give the quantities for all ingredients, the precise temperatures and time, and achieved higher relative pigment yields (75% versus 45%). Full chemical characterisation of the reconstructions provided detailed information on the individual steps in the pigment manufacture and revealed that the presence of calcium sulphate dihydrate (gypsum) in the final pigment was a result of its formation in situ. Infrared, reflectance, and fluorescence spectroscopy proved to be essential and complementary techniques: while infrared was used to characterise additives and binders, reflectance and fluorescence data were fundamental for identifying the chromophore. The pigments and paints produced can now be used as standards for the identification and investigation of brazilwood lake pigments found in artworks.  相似文献

Abstract

The small areas of white metallic pigment seen on the south wall of J. M. Whistler's ‘Peacock Room’ in the Freer Gallery of Art are platinum; this has been used, with a yellow-brown ground, to overpaint a preceding layer of silver which, in one place only, is over a preceding layer of gold. The yellow metallic pigment is confirmed as gold and the blue colour of the south wall and elsewhere is based on Prussian blue. On a separate wood panel a green was tentatively identified as copper resinate, and iron-oxide-based pigments appear to be present. In all areas investigated a white, used as a ground and in admixture, was essentially lead white and calcium carbonate. The significance of these results is discussed briefly.  相似文献

Abstract

The study focuses on the range of pigments and media that the Italian artist Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) employed for selected works dating between 1949 and 1968. Samples were taken from ten groups of works, all on canvas support, as well as from painting equipment that survived in the artist's former two studios. Techniques of analysis used were pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for media identification, and laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and Raman microspectroscopy for pigment identification. Fontana's reputation as a daring and experimental artist, best known for his group of slashed paintings called tagli, is seen to correspond with certain unusual material choices he made. The study also points to several links that exist between seemingly unrelated cycles. These links are, among others, based on experiences with in part novel media such as oil, alkyd, polyvinyl acetate, acrylic, acrylic–vinyl, and mixtures of them. With regard to pigments, the selection of samples showed that they were mostly of a synthetic organic nature.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This work presents a study of samples of the mural painting The Allegory of the Industrial Development of São Paulo (Alegoria ao Desenvolvimento Industrial Paulista), made in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, by the artist Fulvio Pennacchi. Using transmitted light petrographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and X-ray fluorescence, the stratigraphy, the textures, the mineralogy, and the chemical compositions of the mural were established; therefore the painting techniques, pigments, and materials applied by the artist were identified. The mural was painted with the fresco technique and variations. This technique involves the use of materials of mineral origin, both in the support and for the pigments. About the artist’s relevance, Fulvio Pennacchi is considered an important muralist of his time, being one of the pioneers in the production of frescoes in Brazil. The mural, measuring approximately 11?×?6?m, painted in 1954, was removed from where it was originally made, in consequence of a fire that affected the place. Specialized engineers transported it, and today it is stored awaiting restoration. The data presented here can support the process of restoration of the mural, as well as contribute to the improvement of protocols for the analysis of works of art, and to the historical record of mural painting techniques over time.  相似文献

Summary

A Roman wall painting of the first century AD, recently discovered in Rome, has been studied extensively, in situ, by non-destructive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The coloured pigments, the medium and the plaster were all examined. The presence of potassium and calcium in all coloured layers demonstrates that the painting technique is of a type very similar to that used in Pompeian wall paintings, and described in the 1950s by Selim Augusti. In this type of wall painting, the pigments were dissolved in a lime/soap/water solution, the function of the soap being to mitigate the negative effects of lime on alkali-sensitive mineral-based colours.  相似文献

Abstract

The red iron oxide pigment known as burnt yellow earth has been used as a substitute for naturally occurring red earth since earliest times. Documentary evidence indicates that this pigment was often produced by heating yellow earth for anywhere from a few minutes up to several hours at temperatures below 8000 C. When yellow earth is burnt under these conditions, its constituent goethite is transformed to red iron oxide with an anomalous diffraction pattern corresponding to a disordered haematite crystal structure. Using pigments of known origin and processing, it is shown that X-ray microdiffractometry can be used to classify very small samples of red iron oxide pigments and that, in some cases, the diffraction pattern can provide evidence to support or refute the use of burnt yellow earth.  相似文献

The Shosoin treasures, which include the belongings of Emperor Shomu (CE 701–756) and Empress Komyo (CE 701–760), have an honorable origin and have been continuously handed down for generations since the eighth century in the Todaiji temple in Nara, Japan. Some of the beautiful artifacts found among the treasures display the bachiru carving technique, in which a delicate pattern is produced by carving dyed ivory or antler using additional painting. To elucidate the colorants used for dyeing and painting in the bachiru technique, non-invasive scientific analyses using fiber optic reflectance spectrometry in the visible region, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were performed for eight treasures: a go game board, two go pieces, a nyoi (ritual nail pole), a kugo harp, a bird-shaped accessory, a kaburaya arrow, and a ritual ruler. Second derivatization of the reflectance spectra led to characterization of the dyes in the treasures as sappanwood, lac, madder, gromwell, and indigo. Lac and atacamite were respectively identified in the red and green areas of the painting by reflectance spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. These results indicated the use of a variety of colorants for the bachiru carving technique in the eighth century.  相似文献

Abstract

An investigation for light exposure on pigments in low-oxygen environments (in the range 0–5% oxygen) was conducted using a purpose-built automated microfadometer for a large sample set including multiple samples of traditional watercolour pigments from nineteenth-century and twentieth-century sources, selected for concerns over their stability in anoxia. The pigments were prepared for usage in watercolour painting: ground and mixed in gum Arabic and applied to historically accurate gelatine glue-sized cotton and linen-based papers. Anoxia benefited many colorants and no colorant fared worse in anoxia than in air, with the exception of Prussian blue and Prussian green (which contains Prussian blue). A Prussian blue sampled from the studio materials of J.M.W. Turner (1775 ? 1851) was microfaded in different environments (normal air (20.9% oxygen) 0, 1, 2, 3.5, or 5% oxygen in nitrogen) and the subsequent dark behaviour was measured. The behaviour of the sample (in normal air, anoxia, and 5% oxygen in nitrogen) proved to be consistent with the 55 separately sourced Prussian blue samples. When exposed to light in 5% oxygen in nitrogen, Prussian blue demonstrated the same light stability as in air (at approximately 21°C and 1 atmosphere). Storage in 5% oxygen is proposed for ‘anoxic’ display of paper-based artworks that might contain Prussian blue, to protect this material while reducing light-induced damage to other components of a watercolour, including organic colorants and the paper support.  相似文献

Abstract

A wide-ranging sample set consisting of dry pigments, dyed textiles, organic and aniline-based dyes, gouaches and watercolors, fluorescent inks, and natural history specimens was exposed to light in air (20.9% oxygen) and near-anoxic environments. After a light dosage of approximately 17.5 Mlux-hours under controlled temperature and humidity conditions, 113 of 125 samples (90% of the sample set) were shown to exhibit less color change in a low-oxygen environment compared with its behavior in air. Thirty-nine percent of this subset displayed color change in anoxia that was between two and four times lower than that observed in air, whereas 47% showed color change in anoxia reduced by a factor of four or more. In contrast, six samples exhibited greater color change in anoxia than in air – these samples included Prussian blue watercolor (three samples), Antwerp blue watercolor, Verdigris dry pigment, and Fluorescent Yellow Winsor & Newton Gouache. Although the results from this small sample subset may cause concern when considering the use of anoxia in the conservation of cultural heritage, particularly for colorant systems whose behavior in anoxia has not yet been identified, this study demonstrates the overwhelming benefits of anoxic light exposure for the vast majority of samples investigated here.  相似文献

Abstract

Naturally occurring pigments used by Aborigines in rock paintings have been collected in Western Australia. They area red pigment (mainly hematite, Fe2O3)(from a red ochre mine worked until historic times by Aborigines, and a white pigment (huntite, Mg3Ca(CO3)4) which is still collected and used by Aborigines. Samples were also taken from rock paintings in which these pigments were used or were thought to have been used. The pigment samples were analysed to establish chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties. The paint samples were examined microscopically and with an electron probe to study their relationship with the rock surface and with other paint layers. The relationship between the pigments’ properties and their durability is discussed.  相似文献

Two red dyes from 21st dynasty Egypt and one from the 12th dynasty were analyzed. The first two were essentially madder, in one case mixed with small amounts of tannins. Abstract

Study by X-ray microanalysis of 155 coloured grounds from French paintings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries allowed us to establish the nature of their constituents. The colour was introduced by three varieties of pigment, brown earths, ochres and iron oxides which were used in combination with calcium carbonate, lead white and minium. This confirms the recipes mentioned in the old treatises. The presence of barium sulphate, unexpected in this period, is connected with the nature of the coloured pigments and the place of execution of the works.  相似文献

Abstract

A very moderate, non-destructive radioactivation of oil paintings, induced by thermal neutron bombardment, such that approximately only one in 1012 of the atoms comprising any painting is transformed into a radioactive species, has been found to produce temporary radioactivity sufficient to expose photographic film placed in direct contact with the paintings.

The resulting autoradiographs resemble conventional X-radiographs in that they reveal structural details in depth of both the painting and its support. Since the radioactivities arising from the different elements within a painting decay in different manners and at different rates, a series of significantly distinct auto radiographs can be obtained of any painting by making exposures through appropriate filters and at varying times following the original activation. Analysis of such a series of autoradiographs permits the identification of a number of the pigments used in a painting, together with information about the manner in which they were originally laid down by the artist and their distribution throughout the body of the painting.

Preliminary investigations have shown that the stability of oil paintings is unaffected by the activation procedure. The inherently necessary radiation dose absorbed by a painting as a result of activation sufficient for autoradiography is of the order of 50 rads. Paintings subjected to absorbed doses one hundred times as great as the dose necessary for autoradiography exhibit no changes in color, hardness, flexibility and solubility three years after their original activation.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents the first evidence of lapis lazuli or lazurite that was detected unexpectedly using micro-Raman spectroscopy during research to identify an enigmatic purple hue on the thirteenth-century BC Greek Bronze Age wall paintings from Gla. The lapis lazuli material was found as part of a mixture including a red iron oxide and an as yet unidentified purple staining material. Existing purple mixtures of that period are also discussed. The identification of lapis lazuli at Gla may prove to be the earliest known use of this pigment in buon fresco, in both Eastern and Western painting traditions. Furthermore, this precedes the next known use of the material as a pigment by 1800 years. The existence of this blue pigment is also discussed within the context of the blue pigment palette of the Bronze Age Aegean and eastern Mediterranean Bronze Age (3300–1100 BC), to show its use in relation to other blue materials and to demonstrate the technology and knowledge mastered by the artists who used this lazurite.  相似文献

Abstract

Samples of pigments from excavated wall-paintings at the great civilization center of the Greek Bronze Age, Thera, have been analysed by the non-destructive methods of X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and mineralogical microscopic examination. The results showed that three types of blue pigment were used, namely the well-known Egyptian blue, glaucophane, which is a sodium magnesium (or iron) aluminium hydroxide silicate which occurs as a natural mineral on Santorini, and a mixture of Egyptian blue and glaucophane. Black pigments were rather puzzling in that some of them are carbon as expected, and some are manganese compounds. The rest of the pigments are very similar to those previously examined from Mycenae and Knossos.  相似文献
