In two experiments, rats received preexposure to three compound flavor stimuli, AX, BX, and CX, where X represents a saline solution. AX and BX were presented in alternation; CX, on a separate block of trials. The value of X was then modified, being devalued by aversive conditioning in Experiment 1, and rendered valuable by the induction of a state of salt need in Experiment 2. When given a choice between BX and CX, the rats consumed more of BX than of CX in Experiment 1, and more of CX than of BX in Experiment 2, suggesting that B and C differed in their ability to modulate the response governed by the X element. It was suggested that blocked preexposure to CX reduces the salience of the C stimulus but that the salience of B is maintained by preexposure in which BX is alternated with AX. The implications of this result for the phenomenon of perceptual learning are discussed.  相似文献

Four experiments examined generalization of latent inhibition (LI) as a function of the length of preexposure in a conditioned taste aversion procedure with rats. Experiment 1 showed that one or four nonreinforced presentations of a flavor compound (BX) retarded subsequent conditioning to another compound (AX). However, after eight presentations of BX, conditioning to AX occurred at the same rate as with no preexposure. These results indicate that generalization of LI decreased as the length of preexposure to BX increased. Experiment 2 replicated this effect of reducing generalization, as well as demonstrating that LI actually increased as the length of preexposure to AX increased. Experiment 3 extended the generality of the effect to a procedure in which both BX and AX were preexposed. Experiment 4 demonstrated a similar reducing-generalization effect when generalization of LI from BX to X was assessed. All of these data are consistent with the notion that prolonged preexposure to BX enhances its discriminability. Different learning mechanisms that might be responsible for this perceptual learning effect are discussed.  相似文献

In Experiments 1 and 2, rats were exposed to two compound flavors, AX and BX, containing one flavor in common (X). Following this exposure phase, an aversion was conditioned to A in the experimental group by pairing its consumption with an injection of lithium, while a control group drank A without being poisoned. The effect of this treatment was to establish B as a conditioned inhibitor. In Experiment 1, experimental animals were slower than controls to condition an aversion to B when its consumption was paired with lithium (a retardation test of conditioned inhibition). In Experiment 2, B alleviated the suppression of intake of another flavor previously paired with lithium (a summation test). Experiments 3 and 4 established that these effects depended upon prolonged prior exposure to AX and BX.  相似文献

In two experiments, rats were given intermixed or blocked preexposure to two similar compound stimuli, AX and BX. Following preexposure, conditioning trials took place in which AX (Experiment 1) or a novel compound stimulus NX (Experiment 2) was paired with a food-unconditioned stimulus in an appetitive Pavlovian preparation. Animals that were given alternated preexposure showed lower generalization from AX to BX (Experiment 1) and from NX to a new compound, ZX (Experiment 2), than animals that were given blocked preexposure, a perceptual learning and a perceptual learning transfer effect, respectively.  相似文献

The present research investigated the effects of physical context change and perceptual learning on generalization. In a video game, participants learned to suppress their mouse-clicking behavior in the presence of one stimulus (AX). Generalization was observed between the AX stimulus and another stimulus (BX) that was designed to be similar. When testing was conducted in a context different from that in which AX was used in training, responding to AX was attenuated, and responding to BX was enhanced. That is, the generalization gradient flattened. The latter effect was only evident in groups for which generalization had been reduced through a preexposure manipulation believed to produce perceptual learning. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the increase in generalization observed in the first experiment was due to the context change between the preexposure and test rather than to a change between the conditioning and test contexts. Implications for flattening generalization gradients and mechanisms of perceptual learning are discussed.  相似文献

Retention interval effects are seen in taste-aversion learning when single-element aversions are significantly weaker 24 h after conditioning compared with tests at later intervals. This report contains three experiments which suggest that the source of the increased drinking at the 1-day interval is nonassociative interference produced by the novel conditioning episode. In Experiment 1, a parametric analysis demonstrated that aversion strength increased monotonically over a 30-h period following conditioning, and that by 48 h after conditioning it was stabilized. In Experiment 2, a single US preexposure was used to reduce the novelty of the US prior to conditioning. As a result, animals preexposed to the US had stronger taste aversions than did non-preexposed controls at a 1-day retention interval; however, no differences were seen at a 5-day interval. Experiment 3 investigated whether the counterintuitive outcome of Experiment 2 was due to the summation of environment-illness and taste-illness associations at the 1-day test. The results ruled out the summation argument; the US preexposure did not need to be presented in the conditioning context to strengthen the aversion at the 1-day interval. Collectively, these results suggest that the presentation of a surprising US can interfere with the retrieval of the taste-illness association for a short period after conditioning, and that this contributes to the retention interval effect.  相似文献

The within-compound association approach has been proposed as an account of synergistic conditioning in flavor aversion learning. One prediction from the within-compound association approach is that following taste + odor compound conditioning, postconditioning inflation of one element of the compound should increase responding to the second element. In four experiments with rats, the AX+/A+ design was used to determine whether postconditioning inflation of A would increase responding to X. In Experiments 1 and 3, responding to X was significantly stronger after AX+/A+ conditioning, as compared with AX+ conditioning. In Experiments 2 and 4, the specificity of the inflation effect was demonstrated, because AX+/A+ conditioning produced a stronger aversion to X than did AX+/B+ conditioning. Furthermore, it appears that the taste + odor association is symmetrical because inflation of the taste aversion increased responding to the odor (Experiments 1 and 2) and inflation of the odor aversion increased responding to the taste (Experiments 3 and 4).  相似文献

Two experiments were performed using rats in a conditioned suppression procedure to test two different methods for extinguishing Pavlovian conditioned inhibition. In both experiments, a target stimulus, X, was made inhibitory by giving discrimination training of the form A+ AX?. Then, in Experiment 1, an attempt was made to extinguish the inhibition conditioned to X by presenting nonreinforced occurrences of X, of AX, and of A. Testing for conditioned inhibition took the form B+ BX?. It was found that the extinction procedure did not weaken the inhibitory properties of X. Experiment 2 attempted to extinguish the inhibition conditioned to X by presenting X randomly and independently of the reinforcer, electric grid shock. This procedure appeared to weaken inhibition quickly and permanently.  相似文献

In three experiments, rats were given concurrent exposure to a compound flavor (AX) and to one of the elements of the compound (X). The perceptual effectiveness of A was then assessed by a test involving generalization of a conditioned aversion. Comparison was made with a preexposure procedure in which the compound and the common element were presented on separate trials, either in alternation or in separate blocks of trials. The effectiveness of the unique cue was less after blocked preexposure than after either of the other procedures; concurrent preexposure did not produce a greater effect than did alternating preexposure. These results challenge the suggestion that concurrent preexposure engages a special comparison process that will facilitate this form of perceptual learning.  相似文献

In four experiments, rat subjects were used in appetitive Pavlovian magazine-approach and instrumental conditioning procedures. Experiments 1 and 2 found successful blocking of the Pavlovian conditioning of X when it was reinforced in an AX compound after prior conditioning of A. This occurred whether the outcome following AX was the same as or qualitatively different from what followed A. Experiment 3 repeated those findings but also used a transfer procedure to identify the individual associations between X and outcomes. Stimulus X developed an association with the outcome following AX when that outcome differed from that following A alone but not when it was the same as that following A alone. Experiment 4 repeated that pattern of observations for the case of an X that was an instrumental discriminative stimulus. These results suggest that different associative structures may result from a qualitatively changed and unchanged outcome in a blocking experiment. The results are related to comparable findings for the case of overexpectation.  相似文献

A variant of the taste aversion procedure for sensory preconditioning, as used by Rescorla and Cunningham (1978), was employed in a study of the context dependency of within-event learning. In two experiments, rats received Phase 1 exposure to a simultaneous flavor compound, AX; flavor X was paired with illness during Phase 2, and any tendency for the resulting aversion to be elicited by A was measured. It was found that subjects were less likely to shun flavor A as a consequence of this training if the Phase 1 and test episodes were conducted in distinctively different contexts. This effect was evident both when the change of context occurred just before the test with flavor A (Experiment 1) and when it occurred before Phase 2 (Experiment 2). These results were taken to imply that, as is often found with serial associations, the retrieval of within-event associations is subject to contextual control. The implications of these findings for the interpretation of perceptual learning effects are discussed.  相似文献

Taste-aversion learning in rats is disrupted if the subjects are exposed to the unconditioned stimulus (US) shortly before the conditioning trial but not if this single US preexposure treatment occurs 1 day or more before conditioning. Several characteristics of this proximal US-preexposure phenomenon were explored. Experiment 1 showed that the time course of the interference with conditioning is directly related to the preexposure drug dose. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the interference effect is evident even if the test for aversion learning is conducted following a drug injection, thereby minimizing stimulus generalization decrement for the preexposed subjects. Finally, Experiment 3 showed that disruption of the contingent relationship between tastes and drug effects is probably not responsible for the proximal US-preexposure phenomenon because the interference with conditioning occurs regardless of whether or not the preexposure drug treatment is paired with a novel flavor. These findings, together with previous research, demonstrate the remarkably robust character of the proximal US-preexposure phenomenon.  相似文献

Control of pigeons’ keypecking by conditionalities in the spatial arrangement of two element stimuli (designated A and B) was investigated. In Experiment 1, reinforcement for keypecking was made conditional upon the left-right location of A and B: Reinforcement was available when A was on the left and B was on the right (AB), but not on BA, AA, or BB trials. The pigeons successfully discriminated the rewarded AB configuration, but only after a stage in which a particular element in a particular location (e.g., A on left) primarily controlled pecking. Experiments 2 and 3 systematically replicated these findings and included controls to discount discrimination of the AB compound on the basis of the temporal order (e.g., A followed by B) rather than the spatial configuration of the elements. During a generalization test in Experiment 4, the elements were presented singly either in the left (AX, BX) or right (XA, XB) positions. As would be expected had the animals learned “A on the left, B on the right is rewarded,” responding on AX trials exceeded that on XA trials, and responding on XB trials exceeded that on BX trials.  相似文献

Animals were first conditioned to expect lithium treatment following exposure to one taste solution (the CS+) and to expect no drug treatment following exposure to another flavor (the CS?). All subjects then received a saccharin taste-aversion conditioning trial. In Experiment 1, this conditioning trial was preceded 0, 1, 2, 4, or 6 h earlier by exposure to the CS+ flavor for independent groups. The CS+ exposure attenuated saccharin aversion learning if it occurred immediately before the saccharin conditioning trial but not if it occurred 1 h or more before conditioning. In Experiment 2, the saccharin conditioning trial was preceded 3 or 4.5 h earlier by a lithium injection. This proximal US preexposure injection was either unannounced (Li) or preceded by exposure to the CS+ (CS+Li) or the CS? (CS?Li) stimuli. The US preexposure attenuated saccharin aversion learning in all cases. However, the interference effect was less when the preexposure injection was expected (CS+Li) than when it was unexpected (CS?Li). This outcome could not be explained in terms of direct effects of the CS+ and CS? stimuli on the saccharin conditioning trial, and shows that the proximal US preexposure effect is a function of not only the drug dosage and preexposure interval, but also the anticipation of the drug pretreatment.  相似文献

The effect of a retention interval on latent inhibition was studied in three experiments by using rats and the conditioned taste-aversion procedure. In Experiment 1, we demonstrated an apparent loss of latent inhibition (i.e., a strengthening of the aversion) in preexposed subjects that experienced a retention interval of 12 days between conditioning and the test. In Experiment 2, we found no effect of this retention interval on the habituation of neophobia produced by the phase of exposure to the flavor. In Experiment 3, we showed that interposing a retention interval between preexposure and conditioning produced effects exactly comparable to those seen in Experiment 1. The implications of these results for rival theories of latent inhibition, as an acquisition deficit or as a case of interference at retrieval, are discussed.  相似文献

In Experiments 1A, 1B, and 1C, nonhuman subjects, rats, received long alternated exposures to two compound flavors, AX and BX, that shared one flavor in common, X. Following this, conditioning of an aversion to A was sufficient to establish B as a conditioned inhibitor of the aversive unconditioned stimulus, passing both summation and retardation tests. Two additional experiments (Experiments 2 and 3) expanded the generality of these results to humans, using similar designs but an auditory discrimination learning task. A set of notes sequentially presented served as cues and fictitious composers served as outcomes. Both summation and retardation effects were found (Experiments 2 and 3, respectively). Experiment 4 then sought to clarify the mechanism underlying these effects. The results are discussed within several theoretical frameworks, most centrally the McLaren, Kaye, and Mackintosh (1989) theory of perceptual learning.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, the amount of time rats spent engaged in a range of behaviors was recorded immediately prior to and following the intraperitoneal administration of morphine sulfate (6 mg/kg) or distilled water. No behavioral differences were observed between these groups. In Experiment 2, preexposure to this low dose of morphine attenuated the subsequent acquisition of a morphine-induced taste aversion independent of the similarity of the preexposure and conditioning environments. These results with a dose of morphine that does not produce any behavioral effects, which in turn could potentially mask associative conditioning during preexposure, confirm that the attenuating effects of morphine preexposure on taste aversion learning are nonassociative.  相似文献

Three experiments showed a savings procedure to be an effective and sensitive alternative to sensory preconditioning procedures as a measure of associations among neutral stimuli. Experiment 1 showed that within-compound associations developed more rapidly in reinforced appetitive serial compound conditioning when nonreinforced preexposure to the serial compound was given than when separate element or no preexposure was given. Experiment 2 showed the savings effect to be highly stimulus specific. Experiment 3 examined the facilitation of serial compound conditioning after either simultaneous or serial nonreinforced preexposure to the elements of the compound. The results of that experiment were consistent with those of analogous sensory preconditioning experiments. When preexposure involved only the two elements of the subsequently reinforced compound, serial preexposure produced more savings than simultaneous preexposure. But when preexposure involved a three-stimulus procedure like that used by Rescorla (1980b), simultaneous preexposure resulted in more savings. Advantages of the savings procedure over sensory preconditioning as a measure of association among neutral stimuli are discussed.  相似文献

Two experiments with rat subjects examined conditioning of an aversion to a compound flavor stimulus after preexposing the compound, its constituent elements, or no explicit flavor stimulus. Experiment 1 used a short-term procedure in which preexposure and conditioning treatments occurred on the same day; Experiment 2 used a long-term procedure in which more extensive preexposure was administered several days before conditioning. In both experiments, preexposure of the elements slowed conditioning to the compound more than did preexposure of the compound itself. These effects were apparently not mediated by changes in pseudoconditioned or neophobic responses. The results were related to Lubow’s conditioned attention theory of stimulus preexposure effects.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained in two experiments with negative patterning discriminations that were accompanied by an irrelevant cue. For Experiment 1, the discriminations were of the form AX+ BX+ ABX–, where A and B were relevant, X was irrelevant, and + or – indicate whether or not reinforcement was delivered. The discriminations for Experiment 2 were of the form A+ B+ AX+ BX+ ABX–. A subsequent test phase in both experiments revealed that the associability of A and B, and hence the attention paid to these stimuli, was less than the associability of X.
