The Old Man and The Sea written by Hemingway, is one of the famous novel in the world. In the novel, the writer describes an old man Santiago. He has a very famous saying:"A man can be destroyed but not defeated." In my opinion, he is neither destroyed nor defeated. He is a man with high dignity. He is the one who can give when he can and receive when he needs. He is a man full of high spiritual qualities and these can be passed on to the next generation.  相似文献

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle. He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle. In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about, then he can omit the things he knows, and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water."Here, one eighth refers to the information given by the author, and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth. The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle. This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story. With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.  相似文献

In American literary history, two ocean novels,Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea,have always been comparatively studied.Much research focuses on the two protagonists,Ahab in Moby Dick and Santiago in The Old Manand the Sea,to praise their heroic spirit, which is shared with other commonly acknowledged heroes. However, unique heroic characteristics of Ahab and Santiago which are tinged with the time flavor are commonly neglected.Enlightenment, which took on different facets in the 19th and 20th centuries, and American social development in different stages contributed a lot to the forming of the two heroic styles. In conclusion,Ahab and Santiago,in the sense of the affirmation of one’s value and the defence of their dignity, are heroes, and meanwhile, their heroic behaviors are adapted to the whole atmosphere of a specific time stage.  相似文献

As the hero in Ernest Hemingway’s greatest masterpiece,The Old Man and the Sea,Santiago has always been considered as a perfect example of Hemingway’s stoical protagonists.Being one of the classic characters in the American literature,Santiago is noticed for his strength, wisdom, bravery, and above all,his unsurpassed endurance.Even though the prototype of Santia go in reality,as Hemingway once revealed in an interview,is an old Cuban fisherman who told him about his experience of catching a large marlin and losing it to the sharks in 1935[海],the spiritual prototype of the old man has been best interpreted in the Greek Mythology. To be more precise,Santiago’s spiritual prototype is the combination of Atlas,Prometheus and Sisyphus.  相似文献

In the novel Tess of the D’urbervilles,Tess is successfully depicted. She is portrayed as a brave girl,hard-working,beautiful and innocent.Alec represents a brutal and destructive force, which triggers Tess’s tragedy.Angle’s inveterate old-fashioned prejudices made him relentlessly abandon Tess.Yet what Hardy tries to show is that the disintegration of rural economy in England brought about by the intrusion of capitalist relations as well as the hypocritical morality of the time are the obvious causes of Tess’s tragedy.Meanwhile,Hardy also attacks the injustice of the law.In the novel,he believes a woman is helpless in the hands of fate and Tess is trapped in the web of fate. Her tragedy is fated and inevitable.  相似文献

The publication of the famous novel The Sound and The Fury projects the long-enduring reputation of William Faulkner as a household American writer in every nook and cranny of the world.Just in this novel,Faulkner employs the literary device of stream of consciousness and makes a good play with time and order to his own joy, which makes it an outstanding literary feature in the novel. In this essay, the unusual conceptions of time and order in the novel are tentatively probed mainly from the following three perspectives:1) the initiative for Faulkner creating the novel as a novel against time and order.2) the disordered arrangement as an artistic device——the optimum key to delivering the story.3) the potential order underlying the seeming disorder in the novel.  相似文献

Jef Verschueren is the representative of European Continental pragmatic thought. He puts forward a new theory that pragmatics is a perspective on language and he uses the theory of adaptation to analyze pragmatics."The general concern for the study of linguistic pragmatics is to understand the meaningful functioning of a language as a dynamic process operating on context-structure relationships at various levels of salience"(Verschuren 2000:69).The focal points in contexts are the utterer and the interpreter, for the physical, social and mental aspects of contexts are activated by language users’cognitive processes.Verschueren divided interpreter’s roles into five types:addressee, side participant,bystander,listener-in and eavesdropper, which can explain the adaptation of context and language choices. This is also applicable in college English classroom as the English class is also a context. At present students taught at the same time by the same teacher do not master the knowledge at the same level. One of the reason is that students are not engaged in the class at the same level.According to the Verschueren’s theory, the best English teaching class is one that each student in the addressee of teachers.Addressee is a metaphor which means everyone should follow the teachers’explanation carefully and take part in the teaching activities. It has something to do with interaction theory, which considers students as active individuals but not passive receivers. One of the common interaction patterns is questioning. In this thesis, the question how to make students addresses through adoption of questioning approach in college English class will be researched.  相似文献
