ABSTRACT

Background: Reflecting increased cross-disciplinary interest in the significance of the body in education, this paper considers that a greater appreciation of John Dewey’s conceptualisations of experience and habit would benefit contemporary theory- and practice-related concerns.

Sources of evidence and main argument: The paper draws upon pragmatist-informed epistemological insights into the nature of experience and the habitual body from John Dewey. In doing so, the paper highlights how embodied experiences could become more central to realising a diverse range of educational goals. These include contexts where students appreciate that embodied learning practices can play a reconstructive part in shaping their identity, as well as the culture and school environments they share with others.

Conclusion: The paper concludes by exemplifying and critiquing some conceptual possibilities which recognise the benefits of intensifying bodily experiences and cultivating related habits in everyday contemporary schooling.  相似文献

This paper reports on part of an ongoing research project in England concerning the Nature of Science (NOS). The particular focus is on the initial thinking of the graduate scientists starting a one-year, Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course and the way the course approaches adopted influence their views and understanding of NOS and their teaching. The research is set against a wealth of literature indicating that teachers find it difficult to teach curricula that emphasise NOS. Thus a key impetus for research in this area has been to look for ways that beginning teachers might be better prepared to face such challenges.

Sample

The paper draws on data from three cohorts of secondary PGCE students in a university–schools partnership, involving a total of 169 students.

Design and method

The research lies within a design research tradition. It has used mixed methods, involving written tasks, interviews and focus groups, with an iterative approach where the outcomes from one cohort have been used to inform course developments in successive years.

Results

The results from these cohorts suggest that, while the students starting the course have a less restricted view of NOS than indicated by some other studies, in most cases there is a lack of breadth and depth to their understanding. There is some evidence that the use of specific tasks focusing on NOS in university-based sessions may be helping to develop and deepen understanding. However, the impact of current approaches remains fairly limited and attempts to develop teaching practices often face considerable barriers in the school-based practicum.

Conclusions

Graduate science students’ understanding of NOS as they embark on the PGCE is not highly developed. Hence, the emphasis on aspects of NOS in the school curriculum presents a considerable challenge. This study suggests that there is a need to both further develop an explicit focus on NOS in university-based sessions and to develop closer relationships between schools and university faculty in seeking to support developments in classroom practice in this difficult area.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper considers some of the new realities that are likely to affect higher education, particularly those arising from developments in communication and information technologies. Four scenarios are presented as illustrations of how higher education might change; some of the elements that make up these scenarios are already emerging. Abstract

Current knowledge of the integration of children with specific language impairment (SLI) is examined. The paper begins by defining this group of children and the nature of their difficulties. The heterogeneous characteristics of SLI children are discussed. It then addresses the educational provisions made for SLI children and the opportunities for integration present in different models of provision. Research on the integration of SLI children is evaluated with particular emphasis on the difficulties encountered by this group of children. ABSTRACT

This paper describes the aims, origins and principles of the Australian National Exceptional Teaching for Disadvantaged Schools programme and reflects on findings from its first eight years. As a well-established, mainstream university-based initial teacher-education programme designed to prepare social justice teachers for low socio-economic or high-poverty schools, NETDS has had significant impact on recruiting and retaining high-performing teachers in the schools that need them most. In this paper we discuss how it works, but also outline some of the complexities that arose in trying to design a teacher-education programme with equity at the centre and some of the changes we made along the way.  相似文献

Abstract

How many students with epilepsy need help in basic skills, and if so, how much? This paper looks at communicating with those outside the school who are concerned with the student, those within the school, and with the most underrated resource ‐ the student himself/herself.

However helpful these resources are, the teacher has to cope alone at least some of the time. Most students with epilepsy who are in mainstream classes also cope alone. Regarding academic learning, some students have to cope with the effects of epilepsy and/or medication on alertness, on the processing of information, on attention and memory, and on distractibility.

The resulting teaching strategies are similar to those applying to students without epilepsy, whether of greater or less ability.  相似文献

This paper is an attempt to discuss current and future ESL practice with reference to a postal questionnaire survey administered to all English local education authorities in February 1989. The first part of the discussion deals with ESL practice in its historical context. The second part reports some of the findings of the survey. This paper focuses on teaching and learning the set of real numbers R and its completeness property at the university level. It studies, in particular, the opportunities for understanding this property that students are offered in four undergraduate correlative courses in Calculus and Analysis. The theoretical framework used in the study draws on concepts developed in the Anthropological Theory of Didactics, especially the notions of praxeology and mathematical organization. The paper shows different expectations concerning the same notion (R and its completeness) through different school levels, and intends to bring up some reflections about the transition from Calculus to Analysis.

Academic dishonesty has caught the attention of various researchers who document increases in its occurrence and variety. A review of empirical literature notes occurrence and types, especially of new kinds called “cybercheats.” Twenty-three law cases dealing with students who were charged with honor violations are also discussed throughout the paper. The paper discusses some of the newer problems of detection, i.e., cheating on tests in the classroom and cheating on outside assignments. Prevention is discussed in primary, secondary, and tertiary terms. Practical prevention strategies are offered from other criminal justice educators and an honor code coordinator who handled over 50 cases of dishonor for a large university. Prevention is important for professors because they have some control over the process and can help fend off a lawsuit, or when sued, defend oneself.  相似文献
