This chapter describes eight studies that were conducted with culturally distinct groups living in ethnic enclaves in New York City. Four o fthe studies (involving 1, 447 students) analyzed the effects of SES, family structure variables, family processes, math self-concept, and prior ability on children's math achievement (interconnections within the Walberg productivity model). Four qualitative studies were also conducted with high achieving children and their parents (158 interviews) to secure in-depth information about how th four ethnic groups used different family processes to bolster achievement. The results of these studies show that cultural/ethnic differences had greater effects on math achievement than SES. The children's reading achievement was found to be the most important predictor for math achievement in all the ethnic/gender groups. Excessive pressure and parental help were found to have negative effects on math achievement. However, parental support and the provision of extensive intellectual resources were found to strengthen reading achievement. These processes indirectly affect math achievement. Finally, the qualitative and quantitative data from these eigth studies show that most ethnic/gender groups facilitated their children's achievement (serve as conduits). The Greek Americans, however, attempted to channel their girls into traditional family roles, and Latino families, because of their limited economic resources, were found to marginalize their boys' school experience (cul-de-sacs). 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant group, gender, and grade differences existed in the preferred learning styles of gifted minority students. The Learning Style Inventory (Dunn, Dunn, & Price, 1987) was administered to 54 African‐American (20 males, 34 females), 61 third‐generation Mexican‐American (26 males, 35 females), and 40 third‐generation American‐born Chinese (25 males, 15 females) students. A three‐way analysis of variance on the LSI raw scores of gifted African‐American, Mexican‐American, and American‐born Chinese students indicated significant group differences in preferences for noise, light, visual modality, studying in the afternoon, and persistence. Significant gender differences were found in preferences for the tactile modality and intake. Finally, significant grade differences were found in preferences for temperature (warm/cool environment) and mobility. Findings support and extend past research regarding the learning styles of gifted students. 相似文献

Drawing on participant-observation research conducted in one core urban and one affluent suburban public school, the author argues that critical educational theorists should devote more attention to differential structural constraints on pedagogic choice. Teachers at the urban North End Community School make pedagogic choices that reinforce social hierarchies. They do so, in part, in order to enable their students to manage a series of risks and dangers associated with concentrated urban poverty. The evidence presented suggests that changing the role power plays in urban public schooling requires changing not only the choices individual teachers make, but also educational and other institutional constraints on pedagogic practice. 相似文献

This article explores Hispanics’ concepts of cultural and linguistic identity. It is based on the findings of a recent study conducted by the author in Iglesia hispana de Cristo,1 a Hispanic church community in Western New York. Data come from ethnographic interviews conducted with 48 participants aged 13 to 80 years and with church leaders and from participant observation. Findings indicate that conceptions of identity vary according to age and generation of immigration. Older, first-generation immigrants view language and culture as inextricably linked, and believe that passing on the Spanish language to their children is an essential parenting responsibility. Younger, U.S.-born Hispanics and those who immigrated at a young age, on the other hand, tend to prioritize Hispanic culture over the Spanish language. 相似文献

The history of education for native American (Indian) children has been significantly affected by the shifting policies of Republican and Democratic administrations in Washington, DC. For more than a hundred years the resources allocated to educate Indian children have increased and diminished according to the political philosophies and whims of the political party in power. The resulting confusion of policy, best described as a quagmire, has been that Indian children have been victims of a federal neglect that has led to near cultural genocide. No authority maintains that Indian children have received the educational support, health services, and vocational training necessary for them to have a chance to become productive and contributing citizens in the general society. Today, American Indians are among the most poorly educated, least vocationally trained, and most unemployed of minority groups. This paper attempts to show the relationship between political philosophies and acts of federal administrations and their impact on education programs for Indians across the nation.
