Wild elephants in China mainly inhabit jungles of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province. According to surveys in recent years, about 400 elephants roam Xishuangbanna. The Wild Elephant Valley in the Mengyang State Natural Reserve is where elephants congregate in Yunnan. Elephants love to wander in flocks in areas at sea level of no more than 1000 meters. The valley has ravines and rivers, thus an ideal home range with ample vegetation and adequate water for elephants. 相似文献

This paper examines the relationship between communication and cross-cultural adaptation through conducting a membership categorization analysis of interactions among members of an Asian American Chamber of Commerce (AACC). Analysis of audio-and-video-recorded data gathered during ethnographic fieldwork illustrates how immigrant AACC members adapt to US notions of race through adopting the “Asian” racial category yet define “Asian” in creative ways that meet institutional goals. AACC members also resist US essentialist racial ideology through identifying with ethnic categories that help members meet situated institutional goals. Overall, this paper highlights how members routinely switch among racial, ethnic, and professional identity categories when navigating structural constraints of racial ideology during cross-cultural adaptation in institutional contexts. 相似文献

For this critical intercultural inquiry, I as an Asian/Japanese transnational cisgendered gay man write my autoethnography of queer (or non-heteronormative) Asian–Black (dis)connections. Specifically, I challenge, interrogate, and problematize my queer intercultural production of desire and attraction as I engage in my critical autoethnographic interrogation of dialogues with five Asian/Japanese transnational gay men who have previously engaged in queer Asian–Black relationality. In so doing, I intend to create a potential point of departure to decenter the discursive and material effects of White gay normativity in the knowledge production of Asian queer male desire and attraction. 相似文献

Abstract This study uses the filmic text Slumdog Millionaire to examine how the tension between the nation and the transnational was communicated within South Asian diaspora. Findings from the textual analysis of commentary in the New York Times, The Guardian and the Times of India show that identity is articulated in purist as well as hybrid ways among South Asian diasporans. A lack of comfortable fit between cultural identity and place is evident. The analysis also shows that diasporic identity, hybridity, nation-state, and transnational forces work in particular configurations to raise consciousness about subaltern oppressions and exclusions within multiscalar operations of power and representation in globalizing conditions. Implications for intercultural communication and transitions are discussed. 相似文献

This study uses the Academy Awards as a window to look into how cultural differences influence the reception of U.S. movies
in East Asia. Following the recent research on the concept of cultural discount and the argument that the Academy Awards are
indicators of cinematic qualities and achievement, the research questions focus on whether different types of cinematic qualities
and achievement would be discounted by cultural differences to different extents. More specifically, a distinction between
drama and non-drama awards is made, and it is argued that the cinematic qualities and achievement indicated by the drama awards
are likely to be relatively more culturally specific and hence more likely to be discounted by cultural differences. The empirical
analysis examines the box office performance of 585 U.S. movies from 2002 to 2007 in nine East Asian markets. It shows that
non-drama awards relate positively to box office receipts, but drama awards relate negatively to box office receipts. Moreover,
the negative relationship between drama awards and box office receipts is stronger in countries more culturally distant from
the U.S. The findings are therefore highly supportive to the conceptual arguments. Other implications of the findings are
