T.S Elliot’s the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is just Prufrock’s inner monologue revealing that he was ripped apart by the struggle within him between his sense and his sensibility. According the analysis of the whole song, we can find that the speaker is a vacillating person, his character leads to his tragedy. In the novel Tess of the D’urbervilles,Tess is successfully depicted. She is portrayed as a brave girl,hard-working,beautiful and innocent.Alec represents a brutal and destructive force, which triggers Tess’s tragedy.Angle’s inveterate old-fashioned prejudices made him relentlessly abandon Tess.Yet what Hardy tries to show is that the disintegration of rural economy in England brought about by the intrusion of capitalist relations as well as the hypocritical morality of the time are the obvious causes of Tess’s tragedy.Meanwhile,Hardy also attacks the injustice of the law.In the novel,he believes a woman is helpless in the hands of fate and Tess is trapped in the web of fate. Her tragedy is fated and inevitable.  相似文献

Ralph Ellison’s great work Invisible Man explores the theme of man’s search for his identity and place in society,as seen from the perspective of an unnamed black man.The narrator is"invisible"because he finds out that"people refuse to see"him, and thus experiences a kind of dissociation and disconnection with the reality. The narrator finally wakes up from the disillusionment and begins to ask himself questions which reflects his inner force of liberating himself from the outer force and become essentially self-freeing.This paper intends to discover the reason of the narrator’s changes and its meaning to the improvement of the human beings and society as well.  相似文献

Lord of the Flies is generally considered to be the masterpiece of William Golding, one of the most famous writers in the 20thcentury.There are four major characters in Lord of the Flies,Ralph,Jack,Piggy and Simon.Piggy is a character that Golding elaborately designs. However, scholars and critics pay less attention to him.As a matter of fact,Piggy plays an indispensable role in this novel. This thesis analyzes Piggy in Lord of the Flies, which aims at exploring the real reason of his being looked down upon and laughed at as well as his tragedy and deepening readers’understanding of Piggy in this novel.Through the analysis of Piggy, the author of this thesis finds that Piggy is incarnation of science and reason and prey of evil and barbarism.Piggy is a"great martyr",who dies for his scientific and rational beliefs.  相似文献

Franklin is an earliest writer in American history and he is the most important writers during American colonial period. The most important works of him are Poor Richard’s Almanac and his Autobiography. His works have a tremendous impact on American literature later. What more important is that in his Autobiography he wrote out American dream, the spirit of business and good qualities, and some others. Franklin explained that everyone can get rich by hard work and thrift, and he called on people to come to America to make money. The American dream then became an important theme in American literature. It occurred in many works of many writers in his later time. Since Franklin was such a successful person in many areas, worldrenowned inventor, writer, diplomat and one of the leaders of the American war of independence, he brought a tremendous impact on American society. And because of his success, many Americans later took him as an example and his works were popular and read widely. Both Franklin and his works affected American society deeply.  相似文献

William Wordsworth was England’s Poet Laureate. He is the Romantic poet who is most often described as a"nature"write, and he is always sensitive to every subtle change in the world around him. In my opinion, his love for nature is boundless. To him, nature acts as a substitute for imaginative and intellectual engagement with the development of embodied human beings in their diverse circumstances. It’s nature that gives him knowledge and strength. In this paper, I want to narrow Wordsworth’s conception of nature, and then we can find the harmony in the community of men and nature.  相似文献

Daisy Miller, among Henry James’masterpieces,is the novella which won him international fame.As some critics have analyzed,Daisy is a victim of the values of the Old World. In the author’s opinion,Daisy’s tragedy should be partly attributed to prejudice, which impedes the international communication between the newly wealthy Americans and the Europeanized Americans. In this sense, this paper focuses on an analysis of three forms of prejudice in Daisy Miller and tries to interpret Daisy’s tragic destiny from the perspective of intercultural communication.  相似文献

The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only novel of Oscar Wilde. In the book, Dorian Gray, Basil Hallward and Lord Henry all deserve wide analyses. It has also attracted a large number of readers because of its beautiful language, affluent images, dramatic plot and strong sense of aestheticism. However, besides from such perspective of art, comparatively, seldom are there analyses focusing on the hero’s mental process to reveal his corruption. In this paper, the author attempts to explain Dorian Gray’s gradual mental erosion through Freudian theory of Eros and study of death instinct. Besides his ideas of hedonism which originates from his Eros, the death of Basil Hallward further reveals his cruel psychology which is part of Eros. And his final tragedy reflects his death instinct. By specific exploration, it is discovered that Dorian’s ending is mainly caused by his Eros, which calls for his cruel mentality to commit crimes and later leads to his death instinct with development.  相似文献

The Merchant of Venice is one of the most contradictory plays of William Shakespeare.Through presenting and studying the tragedy nature of Shylock, this thesis attempts to illustrate the tragic nature of Merchant of Venice. In this paper the author tries to reveal the significance of its tragic nature through thorough analyzing.Shylock’s tragedy is the tragedy of individual struggling, which shows in the aspects of family, money and religion. The profound reason for Shylock’s tragedy is his Jewish identity. Therefore, the author of this paper is enlightened hereby, turning to a lot of books and data, and then analyzes the origins of Jewish prejudice from two aspects, society and history.Christianity has dominated the west, with its doctrine mainly derived from the New Testament.Meanwhile,Judaism derives its doctrine from the Old Testament. Therefore, the pious Christians will be misled by the contents of libeling Jews and the murdering of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. So a kind of instinctive hatred toward Jews is generated. This kind of tendency is rather clear in the play The Merchant of Venice. In this play,Shylock mentions several times that Antonio has insulted him physically and mentally in the Rialto.Almost all the characters in the play humiliate Shylock. But,he just endures all these insults quietly, and then looks for the chance to revenge. In the end, under the delicate trap set by the authority,Shylock loses again. He loses everything he could lose, both materially and mentally.Nothing is more frustrating than that. However, the author of this paper believes that it is worth paying attention to in the present day.In this paper, the author chooses this topic, presents and analyzes the tragedy of Shylock, and reveals the positive significance of the tragic nature of the play for our time.  相似文献

Oedipus Rex,which was created by Sophocles,is a famous tragedy.Although Oedipus in this play tries very hard to find his origin and self-identity,it is not necessarily the reason for his downfall. The real reason he was so tragic is that he had no control of himself, making things worse by his arrogance, ostentation and fierce-temptation and therefore inevitably fulfilled his fate no matter how hard he tries to escape.  相似文献

The Duchess of Malfi is one of the greatest tragedies among English renaissance drama. And Bosola is considered to be the most controversial tragic character who on the one hand, is a victim of the corrupted society while on the other, a extremely self- interested criminal. Even Bosola mentions many times his"good nature"and inner confits, he is in many ways"self-victimized" and the trigger of his own tragedy.  相似文献
