The English language abounds in equivocal words; and there has been muchdiscussion on the cautious use of them so as to avoid unintentional ambiguity. Muchattention, however, remains to be paid to ambiguous consturction, whichperhaps leads to the greatest number of misconceptions. This paper is then devotedto a survey of the ambiguous construction characterized by careless placing of aword of phrase, the ambiguous arrangement of clauses in a sentence, theincautious omission of words and unclear pronoun reference; In English, as in Chinese. the proper usage consists in the proper words in  相似文献

Writing is one of the four basic skills students are required to master in foreign language studies, and an important way of language output. However, the teaching of English writing in college is deficient. In the English writings of college students, the lack of structural cohesion and semantic coherence is common. The theme-rheme theory is about discourse cohesion.Proper use of themes and thematic progession patterns qualifies cohesion and clear thoughts of a discourse and the variety of sentence patterns. Therefore, the theme-rheme theory plays an important role in writing teaching.  相似文献

It is of great significance to discriminate good writing and poor writing and Coh-Metrix,a computational tool of reliability and validity, was used to find out the variables distinguishing the quality of students’ timed compositions.Based on the findings, indices of number of words, average words per sentence and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level(0-12) have a predicative power as a function of essay quality distinguishing well-graded writing and less-graded writing in 90 texts chosen at random. These findings indicate that the textual features of good writing and poor writing lies not in the readability of the text comprehension but longer text with more words embedded in sentences.  相似文献

Symbolism is one of the most important and effective means in English writing."Lord of the Flies"written by William Golding is a successful use of it and has received hot discussions from its publication. The symbolic meaning of the characters and the Conch and the Fire in the novel make the novel an allegory that is entirely symbolic.  相似文献

This article treats the chunk 'lian...dou' as a complex conjunction on the ground that the sentence thatfollows the sentence in which the chunk' lian...dou' occurs is often incomplete. The interpretation of theincomplete sentence, or the sentence fragment, calls for the restoration of the elided constituents by re-construction. Moreover, the proposition expressed by the sentence fragment is entailed by the propositionexpressed by the sentence in which the chunk 'lian...dou' occurs. Following Montague's rule-to-rulehypothesis, we can take the entailment inherent in the whole construction as the syntactic reflex in its se-mantics. Since the entailment is obviously induced by the chunk 'lian...dou', we treat it as a complexconjunction.Section 1 demonstrates that the sentence that follows the sentence in which the chunk 'lian...dou' occursis not independent and in many ways is similar to the 'ruguo...(name)' construction.Section 2 develops a scalar model based on Fillmore et al (1988) for the semantic inter  相似文献

The previous studies show that the major problems faced by the students in writing can be classified into two categories, that is, they don’t know"what to write"and"how to write". The researchers found that the specific problems existing in their writings are identified as poor content, incomplete generic structure and misuse of cohesive devices. Therefore, on the basis of the previous studies, this study attempts to use Martin’s genre theory to resolve the existed problems of the Professional College English major’s students in writing and enhance students’ discourse writing ability. Meanwhile, this study tries to answer the following questions:(1) Compared with the traditional writing teaching methods, whether the genre-based writing method has a significant effect to improve students’ writing skills;(2) Whether the genre-based writing method is possible to increase students’ interest in writing. The experimental result and the questionnaire show that genre-based approach in ESL writing teaching really can improve students’ writing achievement and enhance students’ interest in English writing.  相似文献

Love is a permanent theme in the world’s history of literature. With different dictions(choice of words),poets can portray diverse images of love, thus leaving completely distinct impression on the readers’ minds.By analyzing and contrasting the diction in "Song To Celia" by Ben Jonson and that in "The Canonization" by John Donne, this essay aims to illustrate that different dramatic effects could be achieved with different choices of words in creative writing, and diction could be a representative symbol of a poet’s writing style.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to use Coh-Metrix,a computational tool,to examine the relationship between discourse coherence and writing level, and analyze the coherence of high level writing and low level writing. The study uses 5 Coh-Metrix variables to analyze 40 college students’timed compositions from Chinese Learners English of Corpus(CLEC) and their corresponding readability scores. The study demonstrates that Coh-Metrix variables, number of words, words per sentences, the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level,LSA sentence all,and argument overlap can contribute to text coherence.Findings of the study indicate:there is a relationship between discourse coherence and writing level, but there is no significant difference between high level group and low level group in discourse coherence(p=.409>.05),and writing level can not distinguish discourse coherence in EFL learners’writing.  相似文献

Writing well is no accident. Neither is it something students bring into the world with them. Writing well is a skill that is learned. It takes time and effort, but it is a learnable skill and can be achieved by everyone. This paper presents an overview of the basic skills of writing essays and papers in English, the kind of writing students use most often in college. It also reviews the main elements of grammar and the principles of good writing--the base upon which students learn or build their skills.  相似文献

The most important reason why an average writing is different from a good writing lies in whether the writing uses written language or spoken language. To tell the differences between them, the essay analyzes rich features such as lexical density, grammatical intricacy, and use of noun phrase of some examples. Therefore, students may learn how to write in a new point of view.  相似文献

"Iceberg" writing style was created by the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway, who pioneered a new style of writing that is almost commonplace today. "Iceberg" style, as its name, was strong and marvelous in the hiding the 7/8 part while just appeared 1/8. The concealed parts of an iceberg were the implication in Hemingway’s stories. It combined the sensibility and thinkability of literature together in a subtle way and let readers explore the implied meaning from the striking images in the works.  相似文献

The recent two decades have seen a great increase of Original Equipment Manufacturing ("OEM") business in China. OEM products are used exclusively for export purpose and retailed in foreign markets labelled as the purchasing company’s brand. However, whether the use of a trade mark in this circumstance constitutes the "use" in Trade Mark Law and what evidence is needed to justify the "use" in any continuous three-year period have been the focal points of debate regarding the appropriate compass of Trade Mark Law. Looming behind the uncertainty of the legal term -"use" and inconsistent standards adopted by administrative authorities and courts are unidentified risks to be taken by OEM operators.  相似文献

Montage is a term in French architecture originally. Visual media borrows it to refer to the pictorial technique in which cut—out illustrations and fragments are re-arranged, producing a new composite picture with several different images. Literary field applies this artistic technique as a vehicle to create works, especially for stream-of-consciousness fiction which flourished in the early 20 thcentury. This article turns to account for the similarity of montage and literature to divide the writing technique into narrative montage and space montage and dissect the montage use in William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury which is distinguished by its space-skipping and mixed-expression.  相似文献

CET-4 is held to assess whether the tasks assigned in the syllabus have been accomplished instead of being the baton conducting college English teaching. However, based on the structuralism testing theory, the present testing system has some unfavorable backwash effect on classroom teaching. In this article, an analysis of writing testing and writing teaching is put under close examination. And suggestions for its improvement such as a reform of writing teaching by taking writing as a process, emphasizing the development of thinking and its communicative function are proposed.  相似文献

Recognizing the benefits of writing centers in improving students'English writing in western countries, some research?ers have begun to investigate the possibility of the writing center approach applied to Chinese higher education. In the study, I con?structed an interview study with American and Chinese writing instructors and tutors to find the features of writing centers in west?ern culture and to compare the different writing values in Chinese and American cultures. The interviews reveal that the philosophy of writing centers in western culture is to"walk students through writing process"and help students to"transfer knowledge in long term use". The investigation of the writing instruction in the Chinese university shows that students are encouraged to express themselves and to conduct more group work, which is highly valued in western culture. Based on the literature and data analysis, the author argues that it's feasible to implement a writing center in China.  相似文献

The influence of first language(L1) involvement in second language(L2) writing has been a theme widely discussed since the research on L2 writing process thrived in the early 1980 s. So far extensive studies have indicated that L2 writing is a bilingual event and the use of L1 is a fairly common strategy among L2 writers. In light of this cognitive characteristic of L2 writing process,a wide range of studies have been carried out, seeking to further reveal what role L1 plays in L2 composing process and how L1 assumes its role during the process. However, there seems to be no consensus reached by the L2 writing researchers so far on whether L1 involvement facilitates or interferes L2 writing, which results in a lot of confusion and frustration in L2 writing teaching practices. Therefore, this paper tries to examine the conflicting views on the role of L1 transfer in L2 writing process and analyze the reasons and theories that may underlie this phenomenon for an attempt to elicit some pedagogical implications for future L2 writing teaching.  相似文献

L2 (second language) writing teaching and research is greatly influenced by the advent of computer technology. This paper reviews papers, in the field of DDL (data-driven learning) in L2 writing, published in international journals and in Chinese journals, and differences are found in research methodology, research perspective, and research realm. Based on the analysis of the differences, the study aims at finding out the effects of the application of DDL in L2 teaching classroom. The present study, employing semi-structured writing and learning journals, explores how English learners perceive the use of corpora in their writing process. Based on the statistics, it is concluded that DDL in L2 writing is beneficial for vocabulary acquisition. However, corpus consultation does not work well for all learners. Learners' attitudes toward the use of corpus are various. The major findings may find application in teaching practice, and implications for teaching are discussed.  相似文献
