This article explores teachers in the units of high quality education in Finland. It focuses on three questions. First, What are conceptions of good teaching of teachers teaching in the quality units? Second, What do they consider important in their teaching? And third, What is the relation between teachers’ conceptions and the criteria used in the quality unit selection? Findings reveal that teachers’ conceptions of good teaching are in line with the theories of good teaching and with the main selection criteria of the quality units in Finland. Today the quality of teachers is held to be increasingly important yet there continue to be doubts about whether teacher education programs graduate teachers ready to meet the challenges of their initial years of teaching. In some jurisdictions, other agencies (Ministries of Education, school districts, and private providers) are supplementing the work of teacher education through the introduction of new teacher induction programs which have become favoured policy initiatives to enhance new teacher transition, retention and quality. Evidence suggests that induction and mentoring increase teacher retention and ensure more effective socialisation of new teachers into the school culture. In spite of their growing popularity, the degree to which induction programs complement teacher education and/or impact new teacher professional learning remains unclear. In this paper the authors report a secondary analysis of data from an evaluation of the New Teacher Induction Program in Ontario, Canada to consider the implications for the future of teacher education by asking: What are the challenges facing new teachers? In what ways does the induction program support new teacher professional learning? What are the major implications for the future of teacher education? 相似文献

The double-edged sword of Jomtien (1990), which emphasized access to education, and of Dakar (2000), which placed additional emphasis on the quality of education, the Holy Grail, provides the context for the expansion of education in developing countries. One of the most frequently espoused ingredients for success is good governance. The cornerstone of the discussion raised in this article is a small-scale qualitative case study, which investigates the impact of local governance, i.e. community organizations, on community schools in rural Punjab, Pakistan.The research asks: What are the factors which community organizations contribute to teachers’ motivation? What is the impact on teachers’ performance and what are the implications for the quality of teaching? The resulting discussion explores the extent to which community organizations may support teachers better than the more centralized government system, whilst also reflecting on their limitations.Evidence is presented to support the view that local governance may enhance monitoring and accountability systems, and the ethos of schools, but that without the resources to deliver adequate levels of training and follow up, it can deliver very little significant improvement to the quality of teaching. 相似文献
