For the past several decades, China has sent many students to other higher education systems for education overseas. The Taiwanese higher education sector, which is facing intense international competition, is also attempting to recruit students from China in order to internationalize its higher education and solve the problem of overprovision of university places. However, due to national security concerns and youth employment opportunities, recruiting Chinese students has aroused controversies on the island, and the government in Taiwan proposed a "three limits and six noes" policy to promote the interests of local students and societies. However, this inward-looking policy may bring a wide range of dilemmas, such as the conflict of policy objectives between enhancing international competitiveness and promoting a more restricted recruiting policy, concerns about the quality of students admitted from China, the effectiveness of saving the private sector, the imbalanced flow of students crossing the Taiwan Strait, and the inequitable treatment of different tracks of nonlocal students.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

One of the institutional challenges of taking in large numbers of international graduate students is supporting their academic literacy skills. To accommodate a large population of international students, Japanese universities offer various services to support their academic studies and life-related issues, such as hiring international student advisors, offering Japanese language courses, and implementing peer-support programs. As a type of academic support for writing for international students, writing centers have caught the attention of universities in the last decade. To examine the institutional role of the writing center at a Japanese university, this study employs a language management lens to compare the beliefs and interests among administrators, tutors, and international students in improving international students’ Japanese writing. Interviews with the three groups of participants displayed incongruences between the administrators’ interests aligned with institutional goals, the educational philosophy of the writing center, and international students’ language learning needs. The findings point to the tutors' crucial role as language specialists who inform organized language management, and the necessity for collaboration between academic support units and faculty members in providing sufficient academic socialization environments for international students.  相似文献

班主任在国际化石油复合型人才的培养过程中扮演了重要角色,起到了润物细无声的作用。这主要体现在引导学生由"中学"到"大学"的思想转型,培养学生由"自我"向"集体"的团队协同意识,增强学生由"了解"到"热爱"的专业认知,提高学生由"国内"到"国外"的国际化视野。实践证明,班主任制度不仅使教师贴近学生生活,成为学生的知己,引导学生树立正确的大学观,也使学生增强团队协作意识,及时认知专业并培养专业兴趣,更能使学生提高国际化人文与业务视野,这些均为国际化石油人才的知识结构、能力结构和素质结构培养打下了坚实的基础。  相似文献

This qualitative study explores how to better attract international students as perceived from the viewpoints of both international students and university administrators. The 7Ps marketing mix conceptual framework and thematic analysis were utilized to analyze qualitative data solicited from both focus group discussions involving 75 international students and in-depth interviews with four administrators at two public universities in Yunnan province, China. The results indicate that two factors mainly affect students’ decisions on an international education destination: geographical location (Place) and cost of study (Price). Furthermore, the study recommends applying the 7Ps as a totality in university recruitment practices.  相似文献

This paper reports on a mixed-methods case study investigating how higher education staff and students understand, experience and envision the ‘international university’. As it is becoming clear that international student mobility is not in itself a panacea for universities seeking to internationalise, ‘internationalisation at home’ and ‘global citizenship’ are increasingly permeating university policy documents and mission statements. However, little is known about how students and staff on the ground perceive and experience these concepts. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected at one British university through focus groups (N = 19) and through an online survey (n = 148). Findings revealed a conventional mobility-focused understanding of the international university among students and staff, and a great deal of cynicism as regards ‘internationalisation at home’ and ‘global citizenship’. International education is sought after by students primarily for career development. However, very little is known about other meaningful educational outcomes of students pursuing international education in a Malaysian university system. This paper investigates how international students perceive their meaningful contributions to society upon study completion in one research university in Malaysia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in the university with 33 international students, mainly from Nigeria, Pakistan and China. Findings show that postgraduate international students not only want to contribute to their home society through research and teaching at higher education institutions but also to their host-country and third-country communities. The analysis illustrates the interplay between macro internationalisation of higher education policies and factors shaping the micro-level experiences of international students. This study contributes new insights into vital nuances of the international educational outcomes relating to meaningful contribution to society and community development.  相似文献

This paper presents how students reshaped the idea of an international university offered to them. The findings derive from participant observation ethnographic fieldwork carried out at Fudan University in China. The analysis proves that the idea of an “international university” offered to Fudan University students was double-edged in the sense that it both cultivated and screened international talent. Students reshaped their university by manipulating or “twisting” the screening process when applying for short-term study abroad programs, on the one hand, and creating cultivating “devices” within the university, namely student-initiated associations on the other hand. The findings of this paper add a new aspect to the idea of the “international university” from students’ perspective and turn the spotlight on students as active builders of their university.  相似文献
