The relationship between study success and the nature of 550 first-year law students’ study processes was investigated using a modified version of the Approaches to Learning and Studying Inventory. The students were classified into four study profiles according to their approaches to learning, indicating the nature of their study processes. In addition, the students were divided into six study success groups on the basis of their earned study credits and grade point average. The results showed that both approaches to learning and study success in the first study year predicted graduation time and the completion of the degree. Thus, it is important that faculties actively use measures, such as the inventory used in the present study, to promote first-year students’ awareness of their study practices and support the progress of their studies. Individual students need tailored guidance in transitioning to university studies and identifying the demands of the study programme.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study describes how two reform approaches-the portfolio culture and teacher professionalism-converge in the context of a system-wide programme for the professional development of school leaders. In particular, the study reports on the use of the portfolio to assist principals, deputy principals and heads of subject departments improve their performance and account for their actions. The study found that participants used their portfolios for a range of purposes: as evidence of improvement; as an organiser; as a record of achievement; as a collection of work samples. Leaders' difficulty in adopting the portfolio for professional accountability arose from a number of tensions: between theory and practice; between public and private demands of portfolios; between the practical nature of leaders' work and the reflective nature of the portfolio; between the portfolio as product and as process; between choice and compliance. It is argued that the use of the portfolio as an accountability vehicle will depend on leaders' capacity to balance these competing demands. The study shows that, despite cultural and logistical problems, the portfolio has the potential to develop the professional knowledge and practice of school leaders.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION Financial theory and practices suggest thatmutual funds can use information advantage andsubdivide financial markets according to prefer-ences of investors. They are the reasons for the em-ergence and tremendous development of the mutualfund industry in recent decades. Mutual funds in-vestors have different risk preference resultingfrom different levels of income, resources of in-come and psychological characters. Consequently, they will choose mutual funds to suit their needs…  相似文献

INTRODUCTION The most obvious manifestation of gravitys effect on plants is the downward bending of roots and the upward growth of shoots. Gravity is an important factor in plant development (Barlow, 1995). The starch-statolith hypothesis proposed by Haberlandt and Nmec (Audus, 1962) is the most widely accepted view of how plants perceive gravity. Physiological data suggested that the amyloplast containing starch granules act as the statolith in higher plants. Sedimented amyloplasts ar…  相似文献

Teachers’ learning in a learning study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The point of departure in this study is the question: do teachers who develop theoretical knowledge of the variation theory change the way(s) they offer their pupils the object of learning due to the theoretical framework. The aim of the study is to describe this development, i.e. to find if and how teachers developed theoretical knowledge when planning instruction, and in what way(s) this has an impact on the pupils’ learning outcome when using contrasts in the instruction. The theoretical framework is strongly content related, and by analysing the learning object’s critical aspects the teachers are guided to focus on the content in this particular way. The question “what does it take to develop knowledge about the object of learning?” has to be answered by the teachers before choice of teaching method is made. The research method used is Learning Study, a fusion between lesson study and design experiment. The teachers (6) have carried out nine research lessons in three Learning Study cycles (containing three lessons each). The pupils belong to three different classes and are between 9 and 11 years old. The result shows how the teachers gradually use the variation theory when planning instruction and how the learning outcomes shown by the pupils improve. The developed theoretical insight seems to affect the teachers’ ways of seeing the object of learning, such as subtle changes of how to organize the critical features of the learning object, are discerned. In every learning study cycle contrasts are used in one lesson, and in the analysis of the effect of the contrasts, the two remaining lessons are used as control groups. The results show the impact of contrasts in the pupils’ learning outcomes. The need to complement a lesson study with a theoretical perspective on learning is that the teachers are then given the opportunity to make use of the theory when planning instruction individually, not only in a lesson study. There again, the Learning Study model seems to be a powerful model with which to develop teachers’ understanding of the theoretical framework.  相似文献

In the UK at the present time there is much discussion and debate about the evolution of the current arrangements relating to Quality Assessment. Part of this debate focuses on generic threshold standards which will be discipline based and used to ensure that graduates have the requisite levels of skills. Implicit in the full development of these standards is the inclusion of levels, used to indicate standards at intermediate stages of a student's development. To be useful and effective, these standards must be acceptable to a wide community, they must not date easily, they must not impede diversity of provision and yet they must be meaningful. This paper will address the necessary characteristics of such standards, offer the view that standards should be part of quality and demonstrate how this can be achieved. As a case study, the paper will include an outline of a set of standards for computing, and included in this will be attention to level. The ideas are based on abstraction and structure. The ideas in the paper will be seen to have wider applicability than computing.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION With the continuous development of science and technology, especially the rapid progress of electronic industry and micromachine, microparts are needed more and more, and their technical requirements are higher and higher (Geiger et al., 1994; 1996; Geiger and Engel, 2002). However, traditional processing technologies, like cutting, etc., do not meet these requirements. Traditional plastic forming technology has merits like high production rate, excellent me-chanical proper…  相似文献

The access to a vast array of resources is facilitated by the Internet, which, in its turn, does not promote learning by itself as children and young people often use it passively. As a consequence, the teachers' role is regarded essential so that they are helped to interpret and analyze available information critically. Nowadays, when referring to the web and its importance in the teaching and learning process, people no longer think of read-only contents, but in the supporting infrastructure which allows to create and share contents and a space for collaboration, discussion and ideas associated to the concept Web 2.0. The blog, as a means to deploy the concept "on-line interaction" is, according to Granieri, "The most accessible and natural tool for sharing and publishing, in addition to text, images movies and also sound, will be increasingly disseminated, because of increasing speed of data transmission" (2006, p. 31). It is therefore natural that the use of the blog is more and more frequent as a resource, pedagogical strategy or other capacities at all levels of teaching (Gomes, 2005). Taking advantage of the blog educationally is a recurrent approach in Portugal in recent years. Some work in this area is being closely supervised. The method takes into account the complex thinking model (Jonassen, 1996), more or less explicitly, and is carried out by children and young people in elementary schools. In this paper, a case study is presented based on some blogs, focusing on: the methodology for collection of text and multimedia materials; treatment and analysis of data with the NVivo software; findings and further evolution perspectives.  相似文献

The numbers of UK students choosing to study abroad for a period has increased steadily over the years, with many students citing academic, professional, linguistic and cultural reasons as their key motivations. However, while there is an abundance of literature on the advantage of study abroad (SA) for linguistic learning, there is less known about the academic impact of studying abroad. In addition, because SA is largely a process of self-selection, this makes it difficult to derive unbiased estimates of its impact on academic achievement. Using data on students from a London-based Russell Group university, and categorising SA students as those who participated in credit-seeking SA programmes through Erasmus or bilateral/multilateral agreements with partner universities, this paper uses individual fixed effects to compare the post-SA grades for students who sojourned with their expected grades had they not sojourned, as well as with their non-SA counterparts. The results are quite robust across subgroups and indicate that grades in year 3 are less than expected for the SA group, given their pre-sojourn grades. To tackle the problem of self-selection, outcomes for SA students were compared to the group who applied but did not eventually study abroad, and to the outcomes for students who did not apply.  相似文献

people' perception, evaluation and attitude are different among races,so there is cultural--difference.And vocabulary, especially culture-loaded words, can reflect this kind of difference when it relates to values, religions, life styles and stereotypes, while the ordinary words, such as “book, pen” etc, always only have the perceptive meaning. For example, when a child from the Anglo-American world learns the word “dog”,he will normally learns the cultural meaning of it: the dog is “man's best friend”,and he will like dogs,as the saying “love me,love my dog”.But a child brought up in the Chinese culture would be taught that the dog is a dirty and dangerous animal. So people who have been initiated into the culture which is associated with their mother tongue, are naturally inclined to interpret things with their own culture fervencies. As with teaching, teachers should not just make students master language points and grammars, but also irrigate the culture background of English and Chinese words.  相似文献

This paper explores incentives for students to engage with continuous learning outside the classroom, i.e. independent study. Two questionnaires were completed with undergraduate students, asking them quantitative and qualitative questions regarding their engagement (or lack thereof) with weekly readings which are non‐assessed and non‐monitored. The questionnaires identified that the majority of students do not complete the readings despite a consensus that they are crucial for understanding the course material. The two primary reasons expressed for not undertaking independent study are lack of assessment or time‐bound deadlines and poor access to reading material. Students were also asked to imagine potential incentives to encourage the completion of weekly readings, and then ranked these ideas in the second questionnaire. The two proposals with a majority of student support are the introduction of assessment measures to incentivise weekly readings (albeit with some student opposition to such an interventionalist approach) and the introduction of mechanisms that provide greater access to learning materials. These findings introduce the role of ‘access’ as a key mechanism to stimulate independent study, thus challenging the literature’s emphasis on assessment as the primary means to facilitate learning.  相似文献
