As agencies increasingly provide services via the Internet and government documents migrate to online agency Web sites, government service providers face a growing problem of how manage high volumes of public questions sent to government Web sites by e-mail. The Internet provides an easy and accessible way to deliver medical information about the management of various diseases, both to practitioners and to their patients. As there is no control over who posts information on the Web, there is a risk that the interests of the web producer may bias the quality of information. The quality of medical information on the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on the Internet was evaluated, comparing non-commercial and commercial websites. An internet search was conducted to locate relevant websites using a metasearch engine. The quality of websites was scored on a scale of 0-10, based on three items about the credibility of the site and seven items about the accuracy of the information provided by the site. Quality differences between commercial and non-commercial websites were explored. The search revealed 23 relevant websites (12 noncommercial and 11 commercial). The overall quality of non-commercial websites was better than that of commercial websites (median score 7 vs. 4, P = 0.01). Compared to commercial sites, non-commercial websites more often provided information about cessation of smoking (100% vs. 64%, P = 0.03), preventative influenza vaccinations (42% vs. 9%, P = 0.07) and use of long-term oxygen therapy (92% vs. 45%, P = 0.02). Among websites providing information on COPD, commercial sites were much more likely to be of poorer quality compared to sites of non-commercial organizations. In particular, commercial sites do not provide information about simple preventative treatments. There is a need to be vigilant about the quality of health information about COPD on the Internet.  相似文献

In addressing the practical considerations of providing reference assistance to this group, the authors concentrate on telephone and e-mail reference, the use of video technology and the World Wide Web. This article examines the impact of computer-mediated communication — specifically the use of e-mail and GOVDOC-L — and the use of and design of Web pages on academic documents librarians' professional relationships. Twenty-six semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with academic documents librarians throughout the US to enhance and help clarify previous quantitative research data from a national survey conducted on the same topic by the author. Findings from the interviews suggest that computer-mediated communication is not only important for passing information, but also in terms of professional support and community building. Computer-mediated communication also appears to be reducing the use of some other modes of communication by documents librarians. In addition, the interviews provide anecdotal evidence that internal and external relationships have been modified or created anew because of work related to the World Wide Web (WWW). The article concludes with a discussion on the impact that the altering of professional relationships may have on the documents librarians' profession.  相似文献

Two years after the initial 2002 study, a greater number of academic health science libraries are offering digital reference chat services, and this number appears poised to grow in the coming years. This 2004 follow-up study found that 36 (27%) of the academic health science libraries examined provide digital chat reference services; this was an approximately 6% increase over the 25 libraries (21%) located in 2002. Trends in digital reference services in academic health science libraries were derived from the exploration of academic health science library Web sites and from digital correspondence with academic health science library personnel using e-mail and chat. This article presents an overview of the current state of digital reference service in academic health science libraries.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the National Information Standards Organization's new standard, NISO Z39.7-2004, which includes the reporting of the usage of library-generated Web pages and e-mail, live chat, and instant messaging reference queries. The integration of statistics on these new methods of providing service with traditional library statistics provides a more accurate picture of library services and demonstrates how libraries have expanded types of patron contacts in the digital age. This article also discusses the statistical reporting of individual reference queries handled away from the reference desk (e.g., in individual librarians' offices).  相似文献

A survey of academic reference librarians provided data for an examination of differences in survey administration on paper and the World Wide Web, with particular attention to response rates, response time/quickness, sampling bias, and differences in responses that are related to the medium of administration. Three methods of survey distribution were compared: paper survey distributed by mail, Web survey announced by mail, and Web survey announced by e-mail. Response rates for the Web survey were not as high as with traditional survey methods. Responses to the Web survey were returned more quickly, but not by a great deal. E-mail notices were more effective for promoting the Web survey than paper notices. The study detected no sampling bias or differences in the content of responses. Although the advantages of Web survey administration are alluring, researchers must use carefully designed follow-up procedures and avoid technology-related implementation problems to match the effectiveness of traditional paper surveys.  相似文献

Summary

This article begins by summarizing national findings of e-mail reference services in academic and public libraries. It next describes types of e-mail reference services as well as commonalities, differences, appearance of the question form, audience, and turnaround time for selected Colorado libraries. The article then focuses on giving a detailed overview and analysis of two years of Colorado State University's e-mail reference experiences. The number, type of question, who/where the questions come from, and to whom the questions are sent are examined. The unexpected uses of the service are identified. Lastly, broader issues to do with e-mail reference services are discussed. This article is based on a presentation given at the Internet Librarian2000 conference.  相似文献

To prepare for a career, in which they keep up-to-date with current physical therapy procedures and health care trends, it is imperative that students become life-long learners. Four core competencies have been identified as skills to promote life-long learning: e-mail, professional electronic mailing lists (listservs), online data-base searching, and searching the World Wide Web. This paper discusses integrating the core competencies into the curriculum of a physical therapist assistant program through a collaborative effort between the physical therapist assistant program faculty and librarians.  相似文献

When the National Academies Press announced that more than 4,000 electronic books would be made freely available for download, many academic libraries expressed interest in obtaining MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) records for them. Using cataloging e-mail distribution lists, volunteers were recruited for a project to identify and upgrade bibliographic records for aggregation into a batch that could be easily loaded into catalogs. Project organization, documentation, quality control measures, and problems are described, as well as processes for adding new titles. The project's implications for future efforts are assessed, as are the numerous challenges for network-level cataloging.  相似文献

This article compares the use of electronic mail (e-mail) and postal mail in the follow-up stage of a library research project using a mailed questionnaire. Results from the Internet-Related Technologies: Occupational Impacts for Government Documents Librarians survey show that e-mail as a follow-up method is as effective as postal mail in terms of both the speed and size of the survey response. Additional benefits and drawbacks of using e-mail during the follow-up stage are then discussed to illuminate the contexts in which each method may be most appropriate.  相似文献

This article describes the creation and development of The Donation Programs for Books, Journals and Media Web page housed on the Health Sciences Library (HSL), University at Buffalo (UB) Web site []http://ublib.buffalo.edu/hsl/donationprogram.html]. The evolution of the page is traced from its beginnings in February 1998 to the present and other donation resources are mentioned. Gifts and Exchange (G&E) practices in libraries are discussed. Figures showing the Web page as it appeared at three different points in time are included, as well as a separate related story of a local UB initiative to collect and ship medical books to Afghanistan.  相似文献

This article highlights the California Cultures Project as a case study examining the architecture and framework required to support the deployment of digital objects as virtual collections at the California Digital Library. Chronologically arranged, it describes the Online Archive of California (OAC) Working Group's functional requirements for access to digital objects independent of parent finding aids, and the development and implementation of infrastructures supporting this vision. Discussion includes project organization and content selection for digitization, Web site service vision for K-12 teacher target audience, best practices for encoding, data standards, lesson plans, metadata requirements, METS creation tools, project manuals, repositories, search engines, tools enabling customizable interfaces, user assessment, and usability testing.  相似文献
