Key to renewed concern on the affective domain of education (Fensham, 2007) and on school graduates' readiness for a world of work (DEST, 2008; WDA, 2006) is the student's inclination-to-reflect when engaged in a learning or problem-solving task. Reflective learning is not new to education (Dewey, 1933; Ellis, 2001). Since the inclination-to-reflect may not be obvious even among adults at work (Seibert & Daudelin, 1999), how much more can we expect from school students? This article presents part of a research on secondary school students' inclination-to-reflect when engaged in chemistry learning tasks. The instrument used is the three-part Chemistry Learning and Thinking Instrument (CLTI). The first part seeks to characterize students' inclination-to-reflect while attempting chemistry learning tasks and the other parts aim to characterize their learning-thinking preferences in the subject. This article shares the construction of the learning tasks in the first part and how students' reflective responses to these tasks are encouraged, scored and analyzed. Since assessment is said to drive teaching and learning, an alternative form of assessment, such as these CLTI items, may help students become more reflective in their learning habits and hence mare adantable tn the world of work.  相似文献

Information is one of the important assets in today's society. Information and communication technologies (ICT) may be particularly important for students as one of the tools shaping global citizens. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of ICT by high school students (n=122) from a developing country, like Ukraine. The Global Citizenship Survey was used and modified for the purpose of this study (Lima, 2006). Initial analyses indicated that the majority of the students use computers at school at least once per week. However, most of the students do not use the Intemet at school on a weekly basis. At the same time, the majority of students from Ukraine have computers at home and more than half of students have the Internet access at home. A chi-square analysis revealed statistically significant gender differences in the use of computers and the lnternet.  相似文献

Motivation is a key issue to make students actively engage in their learning in the classroom.Instead of presenting statements of fact, teachers should ask provoking questions to develop students' thinking and make them more interested in the topics;encourage students to set learning goals at an early time and set it for their own sake;design fun and stimulating activities which challenge students at all levels;give awards or punishment to motivate students to perform better. It is necessary for teachers to make sure that all of these strategies are appropriately applied so that students may be highly motivated and facilitate their learning.  相似文献

English is a bridge connecting the whole world, and its importance is increasingly obvious. There are many links in theprocess of learning English, among which homework is an extension of class and a part that cannot be neglected. Because of the loweffectiveness of traditional homework in primary school English, this paper summarizes the reasons and explores effective ways todesign homework to improve the quality of primary English homework, promote the development of primary school English teach-ing, and improvement of students’ language skills.  相似文献

Teachers are just like our parents. They spend much time on our studies. They always want us to learn as much as possible.Because of this,we always have little time to relax. If I were a teacher,I would teach the students how to learn well.If my students made mistakes in my subject,I would not worry much about it.Failure is the mother of success.I would tell them to review what they have learned and find the solutions to the problem. And I won't forget one important thing, that is,if I were a teacher,I would give them less homework.I would give them more free time to relax themselves.  相似文献

This paper describes a debate held in the author‘s medicine major freshmen in class. The activity is intended to encourage students‘ autonomy, and to train students how to acquire various skills in language learning and communication. Through this activity, the students can get enough space to exert their autonomy, and the author can obtain her desired goals too: The center of teaching and learning shifts from the teacher to the students, that is, the students-centered teaching; given autonomous learning environment, students can learn more effectively; and students can acquire relevant abilities.  相似文献

It is known that the IELTS test has not been a good predictor of English capability in academic settings. More information is required. Are students not motivated to keep improving their English; what obstacles do they face? The English language issues facing international students from China at one University are explored through a survey and focus groups. It is observed that a lack of motivation is not the key factor. Rather one core problem is the very difficult demands of acculturation within a short time frame which would enable confidence for the students to continue to engage with other English speaking students. When faced with such immediate and hard to achieve acculturation, many retreat to their language groups. In the academic context, support for the transition to discipline based academic genres is double difficult as the time frame for second language learners is longer, but performance requirements are more immediate. Many first language students also have difficulties in this area, but have the easier language path to mastery. The study draws usefully on a comparison made with students studying English in China.  相似文献

Communication technology is changing things. Language is no exception. Some language researchers argue that language is deteriorating due to increased use in electronic communication. The present paper investigated 100 randomly selected electronic mails (e-mails) and 50 short messaging system (SMS) messages of a representative sample of international students in University Putra Malaysia (UPM) to find out the impact of these two specific modes of electronic communication on written language use. The e-mails from UPM International Students Association (UPM-ISA) yahoo group were content analyzed. A non-probability convenience sampling was used to select the 50 short message services sent to the researcher about different subject matters by Malaysian and international students at UPM. Then, they were also content analyzed. The results indicated that the language used in students' e-mails and SMS messaging was full of spoken-like spelling, unconventional use of punctuation and abbreviations, and ungrammatical sentences. However, the more in-depth content analysis of the data revealed that the written language is being creatively adapted, developed, and enhanced to suit the conditions of the electronic communication age. Syntactical and lexical reductions are just strategies used to reduce effort, time and space.  相似文献

Students may enter our 5-year engineering school in France at two levels : first and third year. However, due to their quite different backgrounds ( this is especially true for third year students ), we need to provide newcomers with a 6-week training period during which they follow classes in the fields where they particularly feel weak. Unfortunately, depending on the student's background, this is not always possible to bring him/her to the expected level. Another aspect one needs to mention is that these students may not have the same weaknesses in a given field. However, for economical reasons, those classes follow a uniform program as it is not feasible to provide a customized progression. In this paper we discuss how to redesign a mathematics course so as to offer tailored exercise sequencing. Groups of 20 students could then draw their exercises from an intranet database according to their previously completed work, try to solve it by themselves, request additional hints and even ask for some direct help from the teacher. Such a database is currently under development. If it turns out several students stumble against the same difficulty the teacher could show the whole class room how to solve it using the digital projector. This project goes one step further than our initial mobile education project ( 2003 - 2004 ). Until recently, we had used the equipment in a unique direction, from the instructor toward the students. Here, in this new project we are focusing on the whole loop in order to offer a more adequate (personalized) pedagogical progression : from the student to the teacher (when the tablet PCs are monitored by the teacher), and back toward the students (when a direct help is provided by the teacher).  相似文献

Recently in China, most parents, when asked about the attitudes towards homework, favor homework as a necessity for practice because the college entrance examination still exists.Admittedly, homework guarantees students’command of knowl edge and better prepares one for the coming tests. However, for pupils, the assigned homework to be finished during the non school hours is detrimental to individual health, family relationships, realization of schools’educational goals and societal equality. In addition, homework for kids, against its original intention in practice, can’t help kids learn efficiently and thus should be banned. This essay focuses on specific reasons in various aspects why homework should be banned.  相似文献

When final exams finish, you'll have class ranking(分等级) again. Who will come top? Last week the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development(经济合作与发展组织) picked the best students in the world. They are Finnish(芬兰人). The OECD gave a test to 208,000 15-year-old students from more than 40 countries and regions. The OECD wanted to know how well students were doing at school. 2004 is the second time they've had the big test. It is held every three years.Finnish student…  相似文献

This paper aims at exploring college students’ English learning motivation to language learning, including effort, interest, and attitudes. To some extent, it is very important to perform activities in language learning classes. On the one hand, teachers should do every effort to develop students’ keen interest in English study so as to foster their intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, they should set up new goals for students and feedback properly in order to build confidence in English learning. In a word, it is essential for English teachers to understand students’ motivation of English learning so as to save time and teach more efficiently.  相似文献

This case study examines the use of LDOCE4 on CD-ROM in EFL students’writing.Four participants at different proficiency levels were invited to write a composition on a given title. They were then asked to revise their compositions twice, first using the paper dictionary, and secondly using the CD-ROM.Based on a comparison of the two versions, the following conclusions were drawn:1 The CD-ROM is generally more beneficial to EFL students’writing than the paper dictionary.2 Al though the CD-ROM is helpful,it is not a panacea.3 The CD-ROM can provide little help to lower intermediate learners.  相似文献

Many people go to school for education. They learn languages, history, politics, maths and so on. Others go to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher can't teach his students everything. The teacher's job is to show students how to learn. The teacher teaches them how to read and how to think. So the students themselves should learn much more outside school.  相似文献

In the process of classroom education, setting questions in class is an important teaching method, which is used in the whole teaching activity and acts as the link between the thoughts of teachers and students. Hence, creating a wisdom class and using according questions to aid the class are of great significance to both students and teachers. In this paper, 40 elementary students from the 9th grade and 10 of their teachers were studied and the result showed that learning requirements facing to the whole class and students' learning beliefs are essential principles, and questions should be set by having an exhaustive understanding of the textbook, giving previous homework, creating a thinking atmosphere, and setting a proper difficulty for the students. The proper time to set questions is when the old knowledge and new knowledge of the student conflict in the awareness of the student, when the teacher wants to spread thought, and when the teacher wants to make a conclusion.  相似文献

As the old saying goes that interest is the best teacher and it is quite true that the students’initiative in learning is diffi cult to spur without interest.English is the most widely used language in the world, and people are aware of the importance and necessity in English learning. But English is a second language to us,so learning it is more difficult than the acquiring of our na tive language.Interest is the internal power to spur students’learning. So how to spur the students’s interest in engliash learning is the main prblem discussing in it.  相似文献

The main goal of English is to train the students’communicative competence in English language, which is embodied in the students’oral expressive abilities. So it is important for teachers to cultivate the students’speaking abilities. In class, teacher should cultivate students and organize the student-centered activity effectively, providing more chances for students to practice English,in order to improve the oral English teaching.Hence, teachers should play the roles well, respectively as director, participant, consultant, organizer and tutor.  相似文献

With the deepening of China‘s reform and open-door pohcy, the ability to participate mrectly m oral interactions in English becomes more and more important, hence the focus of English language teaching on improving students‘ oral English proficiency. The CET Spoken English Test (CET-SET), which is a face-to-face oral proficiency test, is a component part of the CET test. Since its first administration on a national scale in November 1999, it has been receiving a growing amount of attention from teachers and students in universities in China. As the number of studen tstaking the CET-SET is growing rapidly year by year, it has become crucial to develop an alternative to the CET-SET that can be operationally more practical. My views on the CET-SET are expounded in this paper, which is structured as follows. First, I provide an overview of the CET-SET. Next, I identify several aspects of the test that are amenable to changes. Finally, I put forward some suggestions as to the development of an alternative approach for the CET-SET.  相似文献
