Recent developments have shown that entity-based models that rely on information from the knowledge graph can improve document retrieval performance. However, given the non-transitive nature of relatedness between entities on the knowledge graph, the use of semantic relatedness measures can lead to topic drift. To address this issue, we propose a relevance-based model for entity selection based on pseudo-relevance feedback, which is then used to systematically expand the input query leading to improved retrieval performance. We perform our experiments on the widely used TREC Web corpora and empirically show that our proposed approach to entity selection significantly improves ad hoc document retrieval compared to strong baselines. More concretely, the contributions of this work are as follows: (1) We introduce a graphical probability model that captures dependencies between entities within the query and documents. (2) We propose an unsupervised entity selection method based on the graphical model for query entity expansion and then for ad hoc retrieval. (3) We thoroughly evaluate our method and compare it with the state-of-the-art keyword and entity based retrieval methods. We demonstrate that the proposed retrieval model shows improved performance over all the other baselines on ClueWeb09B and ClueWeb12B, two widely used Web corpora, on the [email protected], and [email protected] metrics. We also show that the proposed method is most effective on the difficult queries. In addition, We compare our proposed entity selection with a state-of-the-art entity selection technique within the context of ad hoc retrieval using a basic query expansion method and illustrate that it provides more effective retrieval for all expansion weights and different number of expansion entities.  相似文献

We propose an approach to the retrieval of entities that have a specific relationship with the entity given in a query. Our research goal is to investigate whether related entity finding problem can be addressed by combining a measure of relatedness of candidate answer entities to the query, and likelihood that the candidate answer entity belongs to the target entity category specified in the query. An initial list of candidate entities, extracted from top ranked documents retrieved for the query, is refined using a number of statistical and linguistic methods. The proposed method extracts the category of the target entity from the query, identifies instances of this category as seed entities, and computes similarity between candidate and seed entities. The evaluation was conducted on the Related Entity Finding task of the Entity Track of TREC 2010, as well as the QA list questions from TREC 2005 and 2006. Evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed methods are effective in finding related entities.  相似文献

Overlapping entity relation extraction has received extensive research attention in recent years. However, existing methods suffer from the limitation of long-distance dependencies between entities, and fail to extract the relations when the overlapping situation is relatively complex. This issue limits the performance of the task. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end neural model for overlapping relation extraction by treating the task as a quintuple prediction problem. The proposed method first constructs the entity graphs by enumerating possible candidate spans, then models the relational graphs between entities via a graph attention model. Experimental results on five benchmark datasets show that the proposed model achieves the current best performance, outperforming previous methods and baseline systems by a large margin. Further analysis shows that our model can effectively capture the long-distance dependencies between entities in a long sentence.  相似文献

This paper presents a robust and comprehensive graph-based rank aggregation approach, used to combine results of isolated ranker models in retrieval tasks. The method follows an unsupervised scheme, which is independent of how the isolated ranks are formulated. Our approach is able to combine arbitrary models, defined in terms of different ranking criteria, such as those based on textual, image or hybrid content representations. We reformulate the ad-hoc retrieval problem as a document retrieval based on fusion graphs, which we propose as a new unified representation model capable of merging multiple ranks and expressing inter-relationships of retrieval results automatically. By doing so, we claim that the retrieval system can benefit from learning the manifold structure of datasets, thus leading to more effective results. Another contribution is that our graph-based aggregation formulation, unlike existing approaches, allows for encapsulating contextual information encoded from multiple ranks, which can be directly used for ranking, without further computations and post-processing steps over the graphs. Based on the graphs, a novel similarity retrieval score is formulated using an efficient computation of minimum common subgraphs. Finally, another benefit over existing approaches is the absence of hyperparameters.A comprehensive experimental evaluation was conducted considering diverse well-known public datasets, composed of textual, image, and multimodal documents. Performed experiments demonstrate that our method reaches top performance, yielding better effectiveness scores than state-of-the-art baseline methods and promoting large gains over the rankers being fused, thus demonstrating the successful capability of the proposal in representing queries based on a unified graph-based model of rank fusions.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of finding a minimum number of nonzero elements of a given nxn matrix on removal of which the resulting matrix can be permuted to an nxn lower triangular matrix using summetric permutations on the rows and columns of the matrix. The problem is related to finding a minimum feedback cutset for the digraph of the matrix. A topological method for finding a minimum feedback cutset for a given digraph is presented. Possible extensions to our work are indicated.  相似文献

Learning semantic representations of documents is essential for various downstream applications, including text classification and information retrieval. Entities, as important sources of information, have been playing a crucial role in assisting latent representations of documents. In this work, we hypothesize that entities are not monolithic concepts; instead they have multiple aspects, and different documents may be discussing different aspects of a given entity. Given that, we argue that from an entity-centric point of view, a document related to multiple entities shall be (a) represented differently for different entities (multiple entity-centric representations), and (b) each entity-centric representation should reflect the specific aspects of the entity discussed in the document. In this work, we devise the following research questions: (1) Can we confirm that entities have multiple aspects, with different aspects reflected in different documents, (2) can we learn a representation of entity aspects from a collection of documents, and a representation of document based on the multiple entities and their aspects as reflected in the documents, (3) does this novel representation improves algorithm performance in downstream applications, and (4) what is a reasonable number of aspects per entity? To answer these questions we model each entity using multiple aspects (entity facets1), where each entity facet is represented as a mixture of latent topics. Then, given a document associated with multiple entities, we assume multiple entity-centric representations, where each entity-centric representation is a mixture of entity facets for each entity. Finally, a novel graphical model, the Entity Facet Topic Model (EFTM), is proposed in order to learn entity-centric document representations, entity facets, and latent topics.Through experimentation we confirm that (1) entities are multi-faceted concepts which we can model and learn, (2) a multi-faceted entity-centric modeling of documents can lead to effective representations, which (3) can have an impact in downstream application, and (4) considering a small number of facets is effective enough. In particular, we visualize entity facets within a set of documents, and demonstrate that indeed different sets of documents reflect different facets of entities. Further, we demonstrate that the proposed entity facet topic model generates better document representations in terms of perplexity, compared to state-of-the-art document representation methods. Moreover, we show that the proposed model outperforms baseline methods in the application of multi-label classification. Finally, we study the impact of EFTM’s parameters and find that a small number of facets better captures entity specific topics, which confirms the intuition that on average an entity has a small number of facets reflected in documents.  相似文献

Term weighting for document ranking and retrieval has been an important research topic in information retrieval for decades. We propose a novel term weighting method based on a hypothesis that a term’s role in accumulated retrieval sessions in the past affects its general importance regardless. It utilizes availability of past retrieval results consisting of the queries that contain a particular term, retrieved documents, and their relevance judgments. A term’s evidential weight, as we propose in this paper, depends on the degree to which the mean frequency values for the relevant and non-relevant document distributions in the past are different. More precisely, it takes into account the rankings and similarity values of the relevant and non-relevant documents. Our experimental result using standard test collections shows that the proposed term weighting scheme improves conventional TF*IDF and language model based schemes. It indicates that evidential term weights bring in a new aspect of term importance and complement the collection statistics based on TF*IDF. We also show how the proposed term weighting scheme based on the notion of evidential weights are related to the well-known weighting schemes based on language modeling and probabilistic models.  相似文献

This paper presents a relevance model to rank the facts of a data warehouse that are described in a set of documents retrieved with an information retrieval (IR) query. The model is based in language modeling and relevance modeling techniques. We estimate the relevance of the facts by the probability of finding their dimensions values and the query keywords in the documents that are relevant to the query. The model is the core of the so-called contextualized warehouse, which is a new kind of decision support system that combines structured data sources and document collections. The paper evaluates the relevance model with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) TREC test subcollection and a self-constructed fact database.  相似文献

Listwise learning to rank models, which optimize the ranking of a document list, are among the most widely adopted algorithms for finding and ranking relevant documents to user information needs. In this paper, we propose ListMAP, a new listwise learning to rank model with prior distribution that encodes the informativeness of training data and assigns different weights to training instances. The main intuition behind ListMAP is that documents in the training dataset do not have the same impact on training a ranking function. ListMAP formalizes the listwise loss function as a maximum a posteriori estimation problem in which the scoring function must be estimated such that the log probability of the predicted ranked list is maximized given a prior distribution on the labeled data. We provide a model for approximating the prior distribution parameters from a set of observation data. We implement the proposed learning to rank model using neural networks. We theoretically discuss and analyze the characteristics of the introduced model and empirically illustrate its performance on a number of benchmark datasets; namely MQ2007 and MQ2008 of the Letor 4.0 benchmark, Set 1 and Set 2 of the Yahoo! learning to rank challenge data set, and Microsoft 30k and Microsoft 10K datasets. We show that the proposed models are effective across different datasets in terms of information retrieval evaluation metrics NDCG and MRR at positions 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20.  相似文献

Knowledge graphs are widely used in retrieval systems, question answering systems (QA), hypothesis generation systems, etc. Representation learning provides a way to mine knowledge graphs to detect missing relations; and translation-based embedding models are a popular form of representation model. Shortcomings of translation-based models however, limits their practicability as knowledge completion algorithms. The proposed model helps to address some of these shortcomings. The similarity between graph structural features of two entities was found to be correlated to the relations of those entities. This correlation can help to solve the problem caused by unbalanced relations and reciprocal relations. We used Node2vec, a graph embedding algorithm, to represent information related to an entity's graph structure, and we introduce a cascade model to incorporate graph embedding with knowledge embedding into a unified framework. The cascade model first refines feature representation in the first two stages (Local Optimization Stage), and then uses backward propagation to optimize parameters of all the stages (Global Optimization Stage). This helps to enhance the knowledge representation of existing translation-based algorithms by taking into account both semantic features and graph features and fusing them to extract more useful information. Besides, different cascade structures are designed to find the optimal solution to the problem of knowledge inference and retrieval. The proposed model was verified using three mainstream knowledge graphs: WIN18, FB15K and BioChem. Experimental results were validated using the hit@10 rate entity prediction task. The proposed model performed better than TransE, giving an average improvement of 2.7% on WN18, 2.3% on FB15k and 28% on BioChem. Improvements were particularly marked where there were problems with unbalanced relations and reciprocal relations. Furthermore, the stepwise-cascade structure is proved to be more effective and significantly outperforms other baselines.  相似文献

The classical probabilistic models attempt to capture the ad hoc information retrieval problem within a rigorous probabilistic framework. It has long been recognized that the primary obstacle to the effective performance of the probabilistic models is the need to estimate a relevance model. The Dirichlet compound multinomial (DCM) distribution based on the Polya Urn scheme, which can also be considered as a hierarchical Bayesian model, is a more appropriate generative model than the traditional multinomial distribution for text documents. We explore a new probabilistic model based on the DCM distribution, which enables efficient retrieval and accurate ranking. Because the DCM distribution captures the dependency of repetitive word occurrences, the new probabilistic model based on this distribution is able to model the concavity of the score function more effectively. To avoid the empirical tuning of retrieval parameters, we design several parameter estimation algorithms to automatically set model parameters. Additionally, we propose a pseudo-relevance feedback algorithm based on the mixture modeling of the Dirichlet compound multinomial distribution to further improve retrieval accuracy. Finally, our experiments show that both the baseline probabilistic retrieval algorithm based on the DCM distribution and the corresponding pseudo-relevance feedback algorithm outperform the existing language modeling systems on several TREC retrieval tasks. The main objective of this research is to develop an effective probabilistic model based on the DCM distribution. A secondary objective is to provide a thorough understanding of the probabilistic retrieval model by a theoretical understanding of various text distribution assumptions.  相似文献

Multimodal relation extraction is a critical task in information extraction, aiming to predict the class of relations between head and tail entities from linguistic sequences and related images. However, the current works are vulnerable to less relevant visual objects detected from images and are not able to sufficiently fuse visual information into text pre-trained models. To overcome these problems, we propose a Two-Stage Visual Fusion Network (TSVFN) that employs the multimodal fusion approach in vision-enhanced entity relation extraction. In the first stage, we design multimodal graphs, whose novelty lies mainly in transforming the sequence learning into the graph learning. In the second stage, we merge the transformer-based visual representation into the text pre-trained model by a multi-scale cross-model projector. Specifically, two multimodal fusion operations are implemented inside the pre-trained model respectively. We finally accomplish deep interaction of multimodal multi-structured data in two fusion stages. Extensive experiments are conducted on a dataset (MNRE), our model outperforms the current state-of-the-art method by 1.76%, 1.52%, 1.29%, and 1.17% in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, respectively. Moreover, our model also achieves excellent results under the condition of fewer samples.  相似文献

Document-level relation extraction (RE) aims to extract the relation of entities that may be across sentences. Existing methods mainly rely on two types of techniques: Pre-trained language models (PLMs) and reasoning skills. Although various reasoning methods have been proposed, how to elicit learnt factual knowledge from PLMs for better reasoning ability has not yet been explored. In this paper, we propose a novel Collective Prompt Tuning with Relation Inference (CPT-RI) for Document-level RE, that improves upon existing models from two aspects. First, considering the long input and various templates, we adopt a collective prompt tuning method, which is an update-and-reuse strategy. A generic prompt is first encoded and then updated with exact entity pairs for relation-specific prompts. Second, we introduce a relation inference module to conduct global reasoning overall relation prompts via constrained semantic segmentation. Extensive experiments on two publicly available benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed CPT-RI as compared to the baseline model (ATLOP (Zhou et al., 2021)), which improve the 0.57% on the DocRED dataset, 2.20% on the CDR dataset, and 2.30 on the GDA dataset in the F1 score. In addition, further ablation studies also verify the effects of the collective prompt tuning and relation inference.  相似文献

Typical pseudo-relevance feedback methods assume the top-retrieved documents are relevant and use these pseudo-relevant documents to expand terms. The initial retrieval set can, however, contain a great deal of noise. In this paper, we present a cluster-based resampling method to select novel pseudo-relevant documents based on Lavrenko’s relevance model approach. The main idea is to use overlapping clusters to find dominant documents for the initial retrieval set, and to repeatedly use these documents to emphasize the core topics of a query.  相似文献

Named entity recognition (NER) is mostly formalized as a sequence labeling problem in which segments of named entities are represented by label sequences. Although a considerable effort has been made to investigate sophisticated features that encode textual characteristics of named entities (e.g. PEOPLE, LOCATION, etc.), little attention has been paid to segment representations (SRs) for multi-token named entities (e.g. the IOB2 notation). In this paper, we investigate the effects of different SRs on NER tasks, and propose a feature generation method using multiple SRs. The proposed method allows a model to exploit not only highly discriminative features of complex SRs but also robust features of simple SRs against the data sparseness problem. Since it incorporates different SRs as feature functions of Conditional Random Fields (CRFs), we can use the well-established procedure for training. In addition, the tagging speed of a model integrating multiple SRs can be accelerated equivalent to that of a model using only the most complex SR of the integrated model. Experimental results demonstrate that incorporating multiple SRs into a single model improves the performance and the stability of NER. We also provide the detailed analysis of the results.  相似文献

Pseudo-relevance feedback (PRF) is a classical technique to improve search engine retrieval effectiveness, by closing the vocabulary gap between users’ query formulations and the relevant documents. While PRF is typically applied on the same target corpus as the final retrieval, in the past, external expansion techniques have sometimes been applied to obtain a high-quality pseudo-relevant feedback set using the external corpus. However, such external expansion approaches have only been studied for sparse (BoW) retrieval methods, and its effectiveness for recent dense retrieval methods remains under-investigated. Indeed, dense retrieval approaches such as ANCE and ColBERT, which conduct similarity search based on encoded contextualised query and document embeddings, are of increasing importance. Moreover, pseudo-relevance feedback mechanisms have been proposed to further enhance dense retrieval effectiveness. In particular, in this work, we examine the application of dense external expansion to improve zero-shot retrieval effectiveness, i.e. evaluation on corpora without further training. Zero-shot retrieval experiments with six datasets, including two TREC datasets and four BEIR datasets, when applying the MSMARCO passage collection as external corpus, indicate that obtaining external feedback documents using ColBERT can significantly improve NDCG@10 for the sparse retrieval (by upto 28%) and the dense retrieval (by upto 12%). In addition, using ANCE on the external corpus brings upto 30% NDCG@10 improvements for the sparse retrieval and upto 29% for the dense retrieval.  相似文献

Experimental results of cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) do not indicate why a model fails or how a model could be improved. One basic research question is thus whether it is possible to provide conditions by which one can evaluate any existing or new CLIR strategy analytically and one can improve the design of CLIR models. Inspired by the heuristics in monolingual IR, we introduce in this paper Dilution/Concentration (D/C) conditions to characterize good CLIR models based on direct intuitions under artificial settings. The conditions, derived from first principles in CLIR, generalize the idea of query structuring approach. Empirical results with state-of-the-art CLIR models show that when a condition is not satisfied, it often indicates non-optimality of the method. In general, we find that the empirical performance of a retrieval formula is tightly related to how well it satisfies the conditions. Lastly, we propose, by following the D/C conditions, several novel CLIR models based on the information-based models, which again shows that the D/C conditions are efficient to feature good CLIR models.  相似文献

Whereas in language words of high frequency are generally associated with low content [Bookstein, A., & Swanson, D. (1974). Probabilistic models for automatic indexing. Journal of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), 23(1), 76–88], shallow syntactic fragments of high frequency generally correspond to lexical fragments of high content [Lioma, C., & Ounis, I. (2006). Examining the content load of part of speech blocks for information retrieval. In Proceedings of the international committee on computational linguistics and the association for computational linguistics (COLING/ACL 2006), Sydney, Australia]. We implement this finding to Information Retrieval, as follows. We present a novel automatic query reformulation technique, which is based on shallow syntactic evidence induced from various language samples, and used to enhance the performance of an Information Retrieval system. Firstly, we draw shallow syntactic evidence from language samples of varying size, and compare the effect of language sample size upon retrieval performance, when using our syntactically-based query reformulation (SQR) technique. Secondly, we compare SQR to a state-of-the-art probabilistic pseudo-relevance feedback technique. Additionally, we combine both techniques and evaluate their compatibility. We evaluate our proposed technique across two standard Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) English test collections, and three statistically different weighting models. Experimental results suggest that SQR markedly enhances retrieval performance, and is at least comparable to pseudo-relevance feedback. Notably, the combination of SQR and pseudo-relevance feedback further enhances retrieval performance considerably. These collective experimental results confirm the tenet that high frequency shallow syntactic fragments correspond to content-bearing lexical fragments.  相似文献
