The purpose of this study was to evaluate an experiential learning project with BSW students to see if their perceptions of older adults have changed. The project consisted of an oral history project and presentation that matched BSW students with older adults from diverse ethnic backgrounds to gather their immigration narratives. The study used a single group pretest posttest design with 17 BSW students enrolled in an integrative field seminar class. Using a series of inferential analyses, BSW students’ attitudes towards older adults, future career plans, confidence with working with older adults from diverse backgrounds, and geriatric competencies were examined. Overall, a significant increase in BSW students who had varying levels of participation in project perceptions of geriatric social work competencies between pretest and posttest were found. Students who both conducted and presented the oral histories of older adults also were significantly more likely to report future plans to work with older adults compared to students who did not. Exposing BSW students to aging and diversity content has important implications towards fostering student interest in pursuing social work practice with older adults and preparing them for culturally competent social work.  相似文献

As the proportion of older adults in our society increases, the need for professionals with a knowledge of the aging process and a desire to work with elderly persons is being recognized. Relatively little information is available concerning the factors that contribute to the desire to work with older adults. To explore such factors, 282 college students (35 males and 227 females) ranging in age from 18 to 72, who attended three colleges and one university in central Massachusetts, were examined. For the past 20 years, these academic institutions have offered an intercollegiate, interdisciplinary program in Gerontology studies. Thirty-one percent of the students surveyed planned on specializing in careers working with older adults. While emotional closeness to an older adult during childhood was found to be related to considering a career in health care, having taken care of an elderly person during childhood was significantly associated with a desire to work with older adults. Positive work characteristics most frequently listed by students who planned on working with older adults were: interesting, challenging, emotionally lifting, and productive. However, the students also listed negative work characteristics as well. Those most frequently reported were: difficult, frustrating, and depressing.  相似文献

The increased number of older adults attributes to a rising need for future professionals to work in gerontology. Understanding the influence of students' career choices is important. A qualitative study was conducted after students' taking a gerontology course to explore students' knowledge and career preference in gerontology. The results were that students reported higher competency in that their knowledge was higher. Although increased knowledge did not necessarily encourage students to choose careers in gerontology, it may have made students more amenable toward accepting working with the aging population in the future. The study offers suggestions on how to increase students' competency level in practice.  相似文献

为探讨大学生社交焦虑与大学生职业决策困难、心理资本间的关系,采用交往焦虑量表、职业决策困难量表以及积极心理资本问卷测查了207名大学生.结果表明:(1)大学生社交焦虑与职业决策困难得分呈显著正相关,与心理资本呈显著负相关;(2)心理资本在社交焦虑与职业决策困难关系之间发挥着部分中介作用,当心理资本进入回归方程时,社交焦虑对职业决策困难的预测系数从0.350下降到0.205(t=3.047,P〈0.05)。  相似文献

While most studies have focused primarily on the correlates of career barriers, research examining specific career barrier typology experienced among college students remains limited. Employing cluster analysis, this study explored the career barrier typology of 318 college students using the Korean college students’ Career Barrier Inventory (KCBI). The variables used in this study included ‘personality’ (hardiness, trait anxiety, locus of control, resilience, and optimism) and ‘career maturity attitude’. Two major conclusions were drawn. Firstly, cluster analysis of the KCBI identified four groups of participants; (a) a salient external career barrier group, (b) a well adjusted group, (c) a salient internal career barrier group, and (d) the worst career barrier group. Secondly, the results suggest discrepant differences of personality variables and career attitude maturity among the clustered groups. Limitations of the present study and suggestions for future research are also discussed.  相似文献

使用大学生羞怯量表、交往焦虑量表以及职业决策困难量表测查了207名大学生,探讨羞怯、社交焦虑与大学生职业决策困难的关系。结果发现大学生羞怯程度与社交焦虑及职业决策困难得分呈显著正相关,社交焦虑与职业决策困难呈显著正相关;社交焦虑在羞怯与缺乏准备之间起着完全中介作用,当社交焦虑进入回归方程时,羞怯对缺乏准备的预测效应不再显著(β=0.131,t=1.464,p0.05);社交焦虑在羞怯与职业信息探索困难间起着部分中介作用,当社交焦虑进入到回归方程中,羞怯对职业信息探索困难的预测系数从0.347降至0.216,(t=2.548,p0.05);进一步的结构方程模型验证了社交焦虑是羞怯与职业决策困难关系间的中介变量。我们的研究结论是羞怯通过社交焦虑的中介作用来影响职业决策困难。  相似文献

A 3‐month intergenerational program was developed on the premise that it is important for young adults, who are in the formative period of career development and direction, to experience the benefits of positive interaction with older persons. Program evaluation findings showed that participation not only influenced the young adults’ interest in gerontology, but also increased their willingness to accept older persons on social and academic levels. Positive changes were documented for the Senior Guest students and included more favorable attitudes toward young adult family members as well as toward the younger generation of college students in general.  相似文献

The authors draw from a 16-month ethnographic study to examine Latino middle school boys’ early college and career aspirations. Sources of information and support for students, as well as contextual factors that shaped students’ early career aspirations were explored. Findings indicate that early college and career exposure may allow Latino middle school males to form feasible college and career plans. While parents and older siblings served as sources of encouragement, teachers and other institutional agents played a more direct role in assisting students prepare and plan for college. The AVID program provided exposure and concrete information that allowed students to identify different colleges and admissions requirements. Findings from this study may be beneficial for school leaders who hope to engage Latino males during this critical stage of development and help improve their college participation rates.  相似文献

为探讨团体心理辅导对女大学生职业决策自我效能的影响,选取湖南女子大学56名大一女生为被试(实验组与对照组各28人),对实验组进行为期8周的团体心理辅导,对照组则处于常态。用职业决策自我效能量表(CDMSE)和焦虑自评量表(SAS)在干预前后进行评估。结果为:干预前,两组CDMSE、SAS评分差异不显著。干预后,CDMSE评分上,实验组"自我评价"、"选择目标"、"制订规划"三个维度得分高于对照组;SAS评分上,实验组低于对照组。研究表明:职业生涯团体心理辅导可以有效地提高女大学生的职业决策自我效能水平,降低焦虑程度。  相似文献

We present findings from interviews with 17 first-year MSWs assigned to gerontological placements undertaken before beginning—and again as they neared completion—of practicum. All respondents, even those most positive and negative at beginning of placement, report a reduction in stereotypes, improved appreciation of older adults’ capacities and strengths, and increased skills in working with this population. All but one respondent reports increased likelihood of pursuing a position working with older adults as a result of exposure through field placement. Specific factors reported by students to influence their decision as well as implications for social work education are discussed.  相似文献

This article describes a service-learning collaboration between a research center at a graduate school of social work and a community college. While the goal of the collaboration was to conduct a community needs assessment of the older population of Bermuda, the project offered a unique opportunity to connect community service, teaching, and research. Students' classroom experience prepared them to play a critical role as interviewers of older adults. Participation in this project enabled students to contribute to a vital step in the process of community change. Students reported more positive attitudes toward older adults and greater interest in working with older adults as a result of this experience. Service-learning can be an effective means of teaching students about aging.  相似文献

高考作为中国"第一大考",不仅关系能否考上理想大学,更是承载无数职业梦想。可未来职业不是仅凭分数就能取得,而应该用科学的职业规划来选择适合自己的专业和院校,才能为职业梦想的实现打好基础。但我国高中生职业理念严重缺乏、职业教育严重缺失,导致高中生很难将高考专业与未来职业相联系,无法科学规划未来应从事的适合职业,与西方发达国家对比差距较大,为此应尽快建立高中生的职业生涯教育,使我国的教育回归本源,摆脱学生为分数而学习,建立为以未来职业发展而学习的教育新模式。  相似文献

This study investigated potential differences in career indecision for adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) and adult children of non-alcoholics (non-ACOAs) attending college. Using a sample of community college students, the relationships among irrational thinking, anxiety and career indecision were compared between ACOAs and non-ACOAs. ACOAs received significantly higher scores than non-ACOAs on state anxiety, p < .01, trait anxiety, p < .001. (as measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; Speilberger, Gorsuch, and Lushene, 1983.) Although both groups were similar in their overall levels of career indecision, there were significant relationships among irrational thinking, trait anxiety and career identity for ACOAs that were less present for non-ACOAs. Results of this study suggest career indecision may be more chronic and problematic for ACOAs than for non-ACOAs.  相似文献

Abstract

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health concerns in the United States and they tend to be among the most frequently reported in college mental health. While efficacious research for the psychotherapy treatment of specific anxiety disorders (e.g., social phobia, panic disorder, etc.) exists, the picture is more complex in clinical practice especially with students who are treated as a whole person, usually involving multiple co-existing disorders as well as normal developmental challenges of adjusting to college. This chapter reviews the evidenced-based research for anxiety disorders in both the general population and the college student population, as well as evidence for therapist/relationship factors. It examines the numerous challenges for conducting effectiveness studies in college mental health, suggestions for working with chronically anxious college students, and future directions for research and practice in this area.  相似文献
