Abstract

A study conducted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library examines data from unfilled ILL requests to determine the status of materials housed in the Main Bookstacks of the library's collection. This study follows the research that was started in the original study conducted in 2002, “Needles in a Haystack: Using Interlibrary Loan Data to Identify Materials Missing from a Library's Collection.” The results of the second study indicate that the use of a high-density storage facility had a positive impact on the retrieval rate of ILL materials from the Main Bookstacks. It also indicated that fill rates increased when over 770,000 items were removed from the Main Book-stacks resulting in improved shelving conditions for the library's collection.  相似文献

This article describes an academic library's process of running multiple allocation models in order to find one that best suits the needs of the institution. The authors employed four methods: percentage-based, factor analysis, weighted multiple-variable, and circulation-based in order to inform the redistribution of book (print and electronic) funds. A comparison of the models revealed very different results. The final consensus of Hofstra University's Reference and Collection Development Department was to employ a circulation-based allocation model to redistribute funds, while also using subject specialist experience to adjust this redistribution.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The rise of “digital humanities” and the “spatial turn” in the humanities has generated many new insights in the study of culture, history, literature, and arts. Within this research trend, the library's geospatial service can play an active role by introducing spatial information literacy and technology. In this article, we use the information literacy framework to explore the library's role in supporting digital humanities by introducing a successful collaboration involving a librarian and history and education researchers in hosting a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)-funded summer institute for school teachers. Our results suggest that the framework has opened a new way to facilitate collaborations between librarians and multidisciplinary researchers.  相似文献

Information brokers can exercise a subtle but significant influence on a library's collection development practices through the reference tools they produce. Traditionally, reference sources' use in collection evaluation and their capacity io direct patron demand have helped shape collection building. New optical disc reference devices may have a more pronounced impact on general collections than their predecessors. The expense of the optical systems will likely reduce general collection budgets, while their potentially heavy usage could cause changes in collecting patterns. To insure that these changes will not diminish the library's abilily to serve its community, selectors will need to evaluate each system in full recognition of broadest possible implications. Careful selection will require clearly established reference goals consistent with the library's mission.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the current era the policy of “Just say NO!” to food and beverages in the library ought to be re-examined. Beginning with the Medical Sciences Library, a new and more liberal policy regarding food in the library was adopted by the Sterling C. Evans Library. The process of development has ensured that student concerns were addressed while the library's principle concern, the integrety of the collection, was also met.  相似文献

Summary

Early in 1997, full Web access was added to Babson Library's public workstations. In a few short months, library computers became a mecca for neighborhood youth. The library's “open door” philosophy and Springfield College's strategic vision to strengthen campus/community ties brought the library to the forefront of actively developing services for community youth. An outreach program for community youth was designed to address the issue of computer access. The development of the program involved the entire library and provided an opportunity for collaborative interaction among the library, related campus programs, and community agencies. Its impact on the library brought to the forefront the debate between “academic service” and “community service.”  相似文献

Discovery layers and remote access are the standard way to access and find academic library resources, making metadata, link resolvers, and indexing important considerations at the time of selection and throughout the lifespan of an electronic resource. Collection development librarians must be aware of how resources will function with and appear in the library's discovery layer. This awareness is an opportunity for collection development and discovery librarians to share their knowledge and collaborate to provide the best discovery for the library's resources. This case study examines ways the Electronic Access and Discovery unit at Auraria Library has fostered that relationship.  相似文献

This paper attempts to address the significant issues of library inter-dependence in a resource sharing environment. The concept of cooperative collection development has emerged as a vital component in an individual library's efforts to supply the information needs of its patrons. This is discussed in the context of both national and local requirements. Specifically, attention is focused on (1) the idea of cooperation today, (2) its antecedents, (3) the forces promoting cooperative collection development, (4) obstacles to its accomplishment, (5) the role of collection policy statements, and (6) a case study of resource sharing at the local level, utilizing the Colorado experience. This is an edited version of a paper delivered at the RTSD Collection Management and Development Institute, Irvine, CA, September 4-7, 1984.  相似文献

One can think of one-shot library instruction sessions as a way to introduce the academic library's resources to first-year students to help them with their research. These classes can also be thought of as an opportunity to “sell” the entire library and its resources to the student. This article will propose suggestions that can be adopted by library instruction librarians based on the recommendations and practices of business marketing practitioners and entrepreneurs who depend on one-shot “selling” meetings to convince their audience to “buy” their wares.  相似文献

Against a backdrop of scant scholarly evidence regarding the effectiveness of E-Participation (EP) in enabling broader macro-level outcomes, we posit that electronic participation use by governments in engaging citizens leads to a more inclusive human development and superior environmental performance, directly as well as indirectly through corruption control. Towards this, we employ human-centered development perspective, the “just” environmental sustainability paradigm, agency theory, and rent-seeking theory to draw linkages between EP, Corruption Control, Inclusive Human Development, and Environmental Performance. Using publicly available archival data for 132 countries, we carry out an empirical analysis and establish that higher EP is positively associated with Inclusive Human Development and subsequently Environmental Performance. Specifically, our results substantiate the role of Corruption Control as an intervening mechanism via which EP's impact on Environmental Performance assumes effectiveness. Our findings contribute to the theoretical discourse on EP by extending the analysis of EP impacts beyond its immediate outcomes (such as Corruption Control) to include higher-order macro-level impacts (such as Inclusive Human Development and Environmental Performance). In doing so, we uncover fresh evidence of EP's effectiveness in enabling Inclusive Human Development and Environmental Performance on a global scale. Based on these observations, we draw implications for theory and practice, and avenues for future research.  相似文献

A library's web site is a virtual “front door” to its services and collections. Libraries can use their “Ask a Librarian” pages to promote reference services and to inform patrons about the different options available. Much variation is found in the naming of those pages and the number and type of reference contact options they include. This article reports the results of an examination of the reference assistance pages of libraries that are members of the Association of Research Libraries. In particular, the study attempted to determine whether virtual modes of reference service are being promoted at the expense of traditional options.  相似文献

Abstract

The University of Texas at Arlington's Library began using an online chat reference in 2002. The service, called Collaborative Digital Reference Service, later became “Ask a Librarian.” Slightly over one year later, the library joined the University of Texas System's “Ask a Librarian” service. Both services are powered by software suite called QuestionPoint. In May 2003 and May 2004, the library's reference staff shared their views towards this new reference tool by completing a questionnaire. Statistics and staff members' responses are analyzed in this study.  相似文献

Automation of vendor files and integrated library systems are changing (a) the process of collection development, (b) the role of the collection developer, (c) the relationship between libraries and vendors, and even (d) the library's organization. By combining files in the bibliographer's workstation, paraprofessional staff can select the core collection; professionals will focus on expensive or fringe titles. Programmed or mechanical selection can replace staff decisions in acquiring the core titles. Automation may increase successful cooperative collection development and expand the responsibilities of collection developers. Professional roles will change to include more policy, preservation, evaluation, and process assignments. Collection development activities may be decentralized and combined with reference and cataloging subject groups or become part of acquisitions processing teams.  相似文献

What happened when an educational video collection arrived on an academic library's doorstep? Decisions about cataloging, processing, shelving, and circulation inevitably followed, but equally important was providing uninterrupted access for the collection's borrowers. Although the relocation plan devised by the library director and circulation librarian retained the “new” collection's unique classification scheme and kept it shelved apart from the library's video collection for at least 1 year, after Technical Services librarians joined the discussion, they proposed immediate and full integration. Their strategy included extensive communication with the videos' borrowers as the collection arrived in the library. Relocating the videos to the library dramatically improved access and circulation.  相似文献

This article documents a survey used at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, to answer the question: “How do I know the library's collection is successful as a partner-collaborator to a local, vibrant art scene that favors performative and installation art?” A literature review evaluates changes in collection development praxis from the championing of approval plans by the R2 Consulting team to the emerging ways the collection specialist may direct collaborative use in the community and academy. A carefully conceived acquisition process complemented by engagement strategies ensures the libraries’ role as a partner to teaching, learning, and research.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to provide data on one aca-demic medical library's experience with first and second year medical students’ use of interlibrary loan at the Indiana University School of Medicine–Northwest, Steven C. Beering Medical Library. The results of a study of 18 years of data show a substantial decline of interlibrary loans by medical students. Several factors, including the unique problem-based learning curriculum and the availability of online journals, which has expanded a small medical library's collection, may be responsible for the reduction of interlibrary loan. This study suggests the need for collection development librarians to understand their medical school curriculum and to invest in the most useful electronic journals for their medical students’ education needs.  相似文献

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is an important service point in the academic library, a channel through which patrons can ask for specific books and expect that those books will be made available to them. Examining the methods in which libraries handle those requests may reveal new workflows wherein ILL can influence the direction of the library's permanent acquisitions. ILL data is able to drive immediate purchases of user-requested titles but also more complex models of acquisition. By comparing circulation rates and expenditures against traditional book-approval plans, acquisitions departments may also measure the financial effectiveness of purchase-on-demand programs and use them to both supplement and supplant those approval plans. At the core of Lehigh University's efforts is an internal library philosophy called “Flipped Interlibrary Loan” (F.I.L.L.), by which ILL can and should inform permanent acquisitions for the library collection.  相似文献
