The novel Sons and Lovers, which is Lawrence’s best acclaimed work, is of autobiographic air. It is called the best representation of Sigmund Freud’s "Oedipus Complex"theory by critics, though Lawrence denied having read Freud before writing the novel. However, it can shed new light on the novel when read in a different point of view. Paul’s road to become a real man can not be separated from his mother, Miriam and Clara, who is Paul’s first and second loves respectively. This article will analyze the novel in feminist perspective and concentrate on the three women’s sacrifice to Paul’s growth in a man-centered society, in hope of better understanding the intension of the novel. 相似文献

According to Freud, the formation and the dissolution of Oedipus complex are the natural processes of one’s psychosexual development. The growth of Amory Blaine chronicled in Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise can be a case in point. His formation of the complex is promoted by his mother’s exclusive love and the indifference of his father in his growth, while his dissolution of it is accompanied by his identification with the father figure Monsignor Darcy and his efforts to search for a suitable object of love with several women. All those are very important experiences for Amory’s psychological maturity. 相似文献

Freud placed much emphasis on infantile sexuality and emphasized that many of our problems in later life come from our relationships with our parents, the so-called Oedipus complex. Freud’s work effected a profound revolution in man’s attitude towards, and comprehension of, his mental processes, constituting after Copernicus and Darwin, a third blow to man’s self-esteem. 相似文献

Although Geoffrey Chaucer—the father of English literature wrote many works, he is best remembered for his unfinished frame narrative The Canterbury Tales. It is a collection of stories written in Middle English in the 14th century. The Merchant’s Tale is one of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Chaucer presents us a dark story about an old knight—January and his young wife—May. Chaucer’s attentive skill appears most of all in the characterization in this story. 相似文献
