ABSTRACT

New forms of data like altmetrics are helping librarians to make smarter decisions about their collections. A recent nationwide study administered to librarians at R1 universities shines light on exactly how these metrics are being applied in academia. This article is based on a presentation from the NASIG 31st Annual Conference. It includes survey results addressing previously unknown rates of technology and metrics uptake among collection development librarians, the most popular citation databases and altmetrics services being used to make decisions, and surprising factors that affect attitudes toward the use of metrics.  相似文献

Conference participants were “transformed” into bookselling companies, given a compilation of financial data and asked to develop business plans. The companies were expected to increase the contribution earned, maintain competitive service, consider the realities of the market and make decisions that reflected the values deemed important by the “employees.” One goal of the exercise was to introduce acquisitions and collection development librarians to the complexities and ambiguities of the business decisions faced by vendors. Another was to prepare librarians for the negotiations associated with outsourcing. The methods and results of the exercise are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The significance of historical periodizations is explored for the purpose of collection development. As historians often rely upon utilizing historical periods for discussion and research in their scholarship, an understanding of the nature of historical periods as a collection perspective and approach can be useful for the subject librarian engaged in or responsible for the history of science collections. An examination of the last 20 years of ISIS bibliographies using historical periods as a chronological tool provides useful framework and knowledge for research, scholarship, and collection management, especially selection for library collections, of the history of science. Data revealed periodizations and their emphases, evolution over time, and possible scholarly directions, pertinent for collection purposes. Informed knowledge of periodizations and how they may affect collections, acquisitions, and instruction enables librarians to effectively interact with the specialists in the history of science.  相似文献

This article examines data from five years of titles ordered as part of an academic research library's purchase on demand program (POD-ILL) for print titles originally requested through interlibrary loan. The study evaluates a variety of factors: patron departments, campus location, and status; the subject areas of the books acquired; cost; and publishers. Assessment of POD-ILL data may assist a collection management librarian to determine the value of having patrons contribute to collection development decisions. In addition, subject librarians can use the data to evaluate approval and demand-driven acquisition profiles.  相似文献

Experimental evidence of the relative advantages and disadvantages of specific “techniques” in the field of broadcasting education is hard to find. For the most part, the training of announcers and other specialists is by example, not theory. However, there is no doubt that both professional and student can benefit from the results of careful research on the attributes and talents necessary for effective broadcasting. The following study offers strong indications that “fluffs” in reading aloud may be far less frequent after a course in silent reading.  相似文献

Abstract

“To make significant contributions at appropriate points in the research process, information specialists must be positioned for proactive service to their users” (Von Seggem p. 101). At the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences Manufacturing Information Resource Center, information specialists are part of their customer' s team and contribute valuable expertise, information, and skills. The synergy of this relationship will be illustrated by describing three projects where these knowledge workers collaborated with their customers. From this experience, these information professionals share recommendations for fostering the customer librarian partnership. In conclusion, the synergistic practices described are related to literature on the topic of librarian customer teamwork.  相似文献

Past research has been clear that talk time during discussion is directly associated with emergent group leadership, but has been inconsistent concerning whether communication content has an effect. The present study directly examines whether content has any impact on perceptions of leadership above the impact of quantity of talk. It utilizes a re‐analysis of data previously described in Pavitt, Whitchurch, McClurg, & Petersen (1995), consisting of a content analysis of discussion by zero‐history groups performing an ad‐hoc task and standing groups performing a task with real consequences to the members. Results suggest that content may count for the standing groups but not for the zero‐history. The implication, that content counts when groups perform “real”; tasks but not ad‐hoc exercises, may disambiguate the earlier ambiguous findings.  相似文献

目前的石刻文献研究主要体现在史料的比勘验照、查漏补缺意义上。实际上,石刻具有多维面相,兼有物质载体与文献内容的双重意义,其研究角度亦可多元。已有的石刻研究,主要存在重文字轻图像、重碑志轻题识、重作者轻书者石工拓工、重静态石本轻动态立石与流通、重出土石本轻传世纸本、重汉字轻非汉字、轻石刻主体研究等偏向。有关石刻研究,除了传统的语言文字学与历史文化视角,还可在文本学、物质文化、空间文化、视觉文化、阅读史等视角进行拓新考察。要拓新多元研究视角,其中尤为重要的是培养研究人员的石刻主体研究观念,将石刻从作为史料的“身份定位”与传世文献之“附庸”的角色里解放出来,单独予以主体性观照。另外,在当今学科体制下,对石刻进行学科意义层面的提升,有利于石刻文献研究朝多元方向发展。  相似文献

This article introduces the subject of animals as viewed by the world's religions. It disputes the common perception that Eastern religions are entirely “animal friendly” while Western religions are wholly uncaring toward animals. The author reviews print-resources on the status of animals in world religions to assist librarians in collection development. Summary

The proliferation of electronic resources led the librarians of Cornell University's Mann Library to develop genre statements to aid in their selection decisions. Genre statements, one for each of five classes of electronic information, supplement the collection development policy and assist the genre specialists in selecting titles by outlining general and specific criteria. The online discussion, among some of the more capable practitioners, about the trials and tribulations of cooperative collection development brought forth an amazing number if insightful comments that should broaden the scope of understanding for anyone interested in the current state of collection development and management problems/solutions. While the concept of “local control” is not diminished, it is apparent (to these practitioners at least) that a self-sufficient research collection is both an oxymoron and an anachronism. Abstract

In seeking to provide a more cost-effective means to substitute for gaps in the collection the University of Hong Kong Libraries began to consider the feasibility of combining purchase with interlibrary loan borrowing in the fall of 2001. From 2002 the University of Hong Kong Libraries implemented a new initiative, called the “Overseas Book Loan Initiative,” to purchase interlibrary loan requests for locally unavailable monographs instead of borrowing them from overseas.

This paper presents the University of Hong Kong model of “purchase on demand,” and attempts to study whether purchase instead of borrow is a better alternative for the University of Hong Kong Libraries' situation, given the local factors and circumstances. The four underlying factors: speed, subsequent use, content appropriateness, and cost of transaction are examined by analyzing actual data collected.

Evidence from the study suggests that purchasing instead of borrowing is a better option if the library can continue to support the higher out-of-pocket costs to achieve the benefits of improving patron support, addingindemand materials to the collection, and optimizing the use of resources.  相似文献

Abstract

Using personally identifiable information (PII) (patron data) to make informed decisions in academic libraries through learning analytics programs has increasingly become more commonplace. In this column, we discuss how libraries around the world have used PII to make informed decisions about hours (gate count), electronic resources (collection usage and authentication), and research assistance (virtual reference). In addition, we discuss the use of learning analytics in library environments including the benefits and concerns associated with its use. Finally, we discuss how we have used PII at our institution’s library and the data metrics we plan utilize at some point in the future.  相似文献

The problem of modeling subject areas based on corresponding fields of terminology remains a topical issue despite the existing diversity of representational forms for these models (rubricators, thesauri, frames). The development of technologies and available software environment promotes the creation of multipurpose terminological computer resources, which are distinguished by their informal capacity and simplicity of data input and processing. In the present paper, we substantiate approaches to the construction of a multilingual, multipurpose termbase as a model of a term field of a subject area. We also describe the infological model and principles of filling such a database based on material from the intersubject area of “educational services.”  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Scholarly and pragmatic definitions of the term “engagement” vary drastically. This article attempts to capture the nuances of the term by exploring journalists’ roles on social media where “engagement” is supposed to be particularly prevalent. Using in-depth interviews, we gauge the attitudes of traditional political journalists as well as those who think of themselves as “engagement specialists” about their responsibilities in interactive spaces. In addition, we analyze what kinds of engagement are happening in these spaces, and how citizens’ expectations are being articulated, in terms of journalist-audience relationship—an organic resultant of engagement. We found that journalists are taking on new kinds of roles in social spaces—often in the name of “engagement”—but that work is not always particularly interactive with citizens; rather, content is engaged with. In contrast, citizens look to journalists to play a number of roles that range from civic guide to therapist. Thus, relationship building happens sporadically. Furthermore, engagement level is dependent on the platform and its affordances. This research offers a continuum of social media engagement conceived as relationship building that can reconcile the disparities in how we define engagement, and suggests newsrooms appreciate the nuances via a series of recommendations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

How do academic library users search for scholarly information? While there are many possible ways, research from several scholarly fields offers a useful perspective; studies from social psychology, economics, and library and information science suggest that users will often favor “low-effort” information-seeking approaches. Though many academic librarians undoubtedly advocate efficient information-seeking strategies, we argue that development of a more systematic and coordinated low-effort approach would be beneficial. Accordingly, this article offers an organized “toolkit” of low-effort information-seeking strategies suitable for self-use by library patrons or inclusion in library instruction programs.  相似文献
