There has recently been significant emphasis placed on environmental education through, for example, the UN’s Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Despite this, there is still considerable debate within the literature as to how the aims of environmental education can be achieved within schools. It seems likely that if there is a lack of agreement as to what education for sustainable development should include, then this will impact students’ understanding of sustainable development. This paper presents findings from research investigating how one class of 12‐ to 13‐year‐old geography students in the UK understands the concept of sustainability. The research used concept‐mapping and semi‐structured interviews to explore the students’ understandings of sustainability, within a case study framework. The substantive findings of this research suggest that there is a wide variety of understanding of sustainability among the students, but that generally they allude to three: the nature, purpose and timescale of sustainability. The paper also considers the impact of method on researching students’ subject understandings, in particular the use of context when considering abstract concepts, such as sustainability, and the different results obtained when conducting interviews versus concept maps. 相似文献

Building on research emphasizing the importance of task in reading performance, the present study examines students’ conceptions or definitions of five common academic task assignments (i.e., argument, essay, opinion, summary and research tasks). Results showed that while students have robust schema for some task assignments (e.g., argument, research report), citing a large variety of task elements in defining each of these assignment, other task assignments are only superficially conceptualized by learners (e.g., opinion, essay). While prior work has demonstrated the important role of task assignment in students’ text processing and performance, this is among the first studies to associate emergent differences not only with the tasks assigned but also with students’ task conceptions. Given the emphasis placed on argument tasks in supporting deeper level processing, we were especially interested in students’ conceptions of argument tasks vis-à-vis summary tasks. Students’ conceptions of these and other task assignments were compared using Cochran’s Q, a non-parametric alternative to the repeated measures ANOVA. Finally, linear regression found students’ conceptions of an argument task to be associated with performance on an argument writing task assignment. For instance, students considering argument construction to require citation use was associated with their inclusion of citations in their written responses. This study is among the first to examine students’ own conceptions of common task assignments and to link task conceptions with performance. Implications for instruction are discussed. 相似文献

Intuitive conceptions in mathematics guide the interpretation of mathematical concepts. We investigated if they bias teachers’ conceptions of student arithmetic word problem solving strategies, which should be part of their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). In individual interviews, teachers and non-teaching adults were asked to describe students’ strategies in situational contexts within or outside the scope of the intuitive conception. The results revealed that teachers relied on their PCK and identified student strategies; however, in the presence of the intuitive conception, their PCK was overshadowed and they ceased to differ significantly from non-teachers. This brings the attention to certain biases that can have a strong impact on teachers’ efficient use of PCK. 相似文献

Teachers in the UK and elsewhere are now expected to foster creativity in young children (NACCCE, 1999; Ofsted, 2003; DfES, 2003; DfES/DCMS, 2006). Creativity, however, is more often associated with the arts than with mathematics. The aim of the study was to explore
and document pre-service (in the UK, pre-service teachers are referred to as ‘trainee’ teachers) primary teachers’ conceptions
of creativity in mathematics teaching in the UK. A questionnaire probed their conceptions early in their course, and these
were supplemented with data from semi-structured interviews. Analysis of the responses indicated that pre-service teachers’
conceptions were narrow, predominantly associated with the use of resources and technology and bound up with the idea of ‘teaching
creatively’ rather than ‘teaching for creativity’. Conceptions became less narrow as pre-service teachers were preparing to
enter schools as newly qualified, but they still had difficulty in identifying ways of encouraging and assessing creativity
in the classroom. This difficulty suggests that conceptions of creativity need to be addressed and developed directly during
pre-service education if teachers are to meet the expectations of government as set out in the above documents. 相似文献

Students conceive of assessment in at least four major ways (i.e., assessment makes students accountable; assessment is irrelevant because it is bad or unfair; assessment improves the quality of learning; and assessment is enjoyable). A study in New Zealand of 3469 secondary school students’ conceptions of assessment used a self‐report inventory and scores from a standardised curriculum‐based assessment of reading comprehension. Four inter‐correlated conceptions based on 11 items were found with good psychometric properties. A path‐model linking the four correlated conceptions with student achievement in reading, while taking into account student ethnicity, student sex, and student year, had good psychometric properties. The conception that assessment makes students accountable loaded positively on achievement while the three other conceptions (i.e., assessment makes schools accountable, assessment is enjoyable, and assessment is ignored) had negative loadings on achievement. These findings are consistent with self‐regulation and formative assessment theories, such that students who conceive of assessment as a means of taking responsibility for their learning (i.e., assessment makes me accountable) will demonstrate increased educational outcomes. 相似文献

The objective of this work was to highlight the conceptions of force held by students aged 10–17 years old, in situations
where animate and inanimate objects interact. In the proposed experimental situations, we varied parameters such as the motion
and position of an object and the agent’s effort. We asked questions about both inanimate and animate objects. Results show
that pupils are able to use a small number of conceptions coherently, but that these are influenced by the context. For inanimate
objects, conceptions develop gradually. Initially, force is regarded as a property of objects related to their weight and/or
motion/position. With age, however, pupils begin to regard it as a process of interaction. For animates, conceptions evolve
much more slowly, insofar as all pupils consider force to be a human property related to the result that is obtained and/or

The present study focuses; firstly, on analysing academics’ conceptions of the purpose of assessment; secondly, on their assessment practices; and thirdly, on the relationship between their conceptions and practices. The data consisted of interviews with 28 pharmacy teachers. The analysis resulted in a continuum of categories of conceptions, from reproductive conceptions with an emphasis on measuring the reproduction of correct information, to more transformational conceptions with an emphasis on the development of students’ thinking and understanding. Although broad variation in assessment practices was recognised, teachers mostly described the use of traditional forms of assessment. Analysis of the relationship between conceptions and practices revealed high consistency between conceptions and practices. 相似文献

Current reform efforts call for an emphasis on the use of representation in the mathematics classroom across levels and topics.
The aim of the study was to examine teachers’ conceptions of representation as a process in doing mathematics, and their perspectives
on the role of representations in the teaching and learning of mathematics at the middle-school level. Interviews with middle
school mathematics teachers suggest that teachers use representations in varied ways in their own mathematical work and have
developed working definitions of the term primarily as a product in problem solving. However, teachers’ conception of representation
as a process and a mathematical practice appears to be less developed, and, as a result, representations may have a peripheral
role in their instruction as well. Further, the data suggested that representation is viewed as a topic of study rather than
as a general process, and as a goal for the learning of only a minority of the students—the high-performing ones. Implications
for mathematics teacher education, prospective and practicing, are discussed. 相似文献

Research on students’ conceptions of learning is a growing and complex area of interest in the field of psychology of education. Even though much of the investigation addressed to explore conceptions of learning at the university level, still less research has considered how naïve (i.e. ‘learning as reduction of deficit knowledge through individual effort’) and sophisticated (i.e. ‘learning as opportunity and self-efficacy’) conceptions of learning are related to personal and contextual factors. This research investigated how gender, academic area, and level of study influence university students’ conceptions of learning. Three hundred forty-six university students participated in the study. They were either from humanities (240) or technical-scientific (106) areas of study and they were attending either a Bachelor (140) or Master’s degree (206) course. Conceptions of learning were explored using a self-report instrument (Learning Conceptions Questionnaire; LCQ). A MANOVA revealed that females show conceptions of learning more related to social and motivational aspects of learning with a greater personal involvement, compared with males. No typical pattern of conceptions of learning was found for humanities students or for technical-scientific students. Increasing with the level of study, students showed both naïve and sophisticated conceptions of learning increased, since both ‘learning as reduction of deficit knowledge through individual effort’ and ‘learning as opportunities and self-efficacy’ were more likely. This paper explores how mathematicians build meaning through communicative activity involving talk, gesture and diagram. In
the course of describing mathematical concepts, mathematicians use these semiotic resources in ways that blur the distinction
between the mathematical and physical world. We shall argue that mathematical meaning of eigenvectors depends strongly on
both time and motion—hence, on physical interpretations of mathematical abstractions—which are dimensions of thinking that
are typically deliberately absent from formal, written definition of the concept. We shall also show how gesture and talk
contribute differently and uniquely to mathematical conceptualisation and further elaborate the claim that diagrams provide

The present article lies at the intersection of research on teacher cognition and speaking competence in a second language. It is a qualitative analysis of teacher accounts of speaking in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Iran. More specifically, the study is an exploration of three EFL teachers’ conceptions of learning and teaching the speaking skill in English. The teachers represented varying levels of experience and education and were classified as experts and novices. Through juxtaposing teachers’ views of how students should learn to speak and how the teachers themselves learned to speak English, the research study uncovers the interwoven nature of learning experience with teaching conceptions. It also unveils the images underpinning their conceptions of how to learn and teach speaking in an EFL context. The results also portray teachers as having unique ways of thinking of speaking while at the same time sharing certain patterns. 相似文献

Schools in Hong Kong are now undergoing many educational reforms. With so many ideas and demanding tasks ahead, principals
have been expected to bear the responsibility for implementing change. In 1991, the leadership of Hong Kong principals was
described as “dictatorial” in a government document, which painted a bleak picture of the leadership being offered by Hong
Kong principals at that time. However, this recent study showed that teachers perceived that principals as exerting some degree
of transformational leadership in schools. All the eight dimensions of the leadership were above the mid-point on the rating
scale. It seems that there is a shift in Hong Kong primary school principals leadership conceptions. This paper describes
the extent to which teachers perceived their principal ’s to be exercising transformational leadership. Issues concerning

Widely thought to be something worth encouraging in young learners, creativity has popularly been associated more with music and art than with other areas of the curriculum. There have been many studies of creativity but few that focus explicitly on what counts as creative thinking in specific subject areas. The aim of the research reported here was to determine pre-service teachers’ conceptions of creativity within the curriculum for English. The study involved analyses of primary school trainee teachers’ responses to questionnaires and follow-up focus group discussion to identify their conceptions. A group of 48 trainees in the final year of an undergraduate degree in primary education leading to qualified teacher status in England completed the questionnaire. Of these, eight volunteered to participate in a follow-up focus group discussion to further explore ideas. Responses were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Conceptions of creativity in English were found to be limited, focused mainly on naïve views of story writing and dramatic activity. Responses indicated that they were often unable to distinguish clearly between the concept of creativity, an example of its occurrence in the classroom, and what feature of that example made it creative. Consequently, their limited constructions of creativity were confused. It is important that teachers in schools as well as those responsible for training teachers in universities are advised that trainees’ conceptions of creativity in English may be inadequate in several respects and that they may not recognise opportunities for creativity. Pre-service training programmes could well benefit from structured courses on the forms and applications of creativity. 相似文献
