Beliefs about knowledge, learning and teaching are assumed to impact teachers' practice (Brownlee, 2004; N. Entwistle, Skinner, D. Entwistle, & Orr, 2000). A change of beliefs is an important step for teacher learning, but it is often seen as difficult if not impossible (Cooney, Shealy, & Arvold, 1998). This study investigated the impact some teacher education programs from China and the USA had on the teachers' beliefs and teaching strategies and how these teachers integrated the acquired knowledge and teaching strategies in their practice. Researchers were particularly interested in investigating teachers' ability and willingness to use the strategies congruent with constructivist learning theory in their classrooms.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were: (a) to identify the teaching beliefs of an ecology teacher when teaching an ecology course; and (b) to determine the influences of these beliefs on students' learning performance. The present study employed a case study research method to conduct a year-long observation, focusing on the teacher's teaching beliefs, research representations, and the students' attitudes and changes in their ecological knowledge. The present study employed both qualitative and quantitative analyses through classroom observations, teacher and student interview questionnaires, a self-administered course comprehension questionnaire, and an ecology course attitude scale among other tools. Findings indicated that the research teacher maintained teaching beliefs that were improvement-oriented and preferred to use an integrated teaching method that was diversified and provided interdisciplinary knowledge. Through the ecology course, the students were able to rectify their misconceptions, learn to view nature from a macro-perspective, and respect life. The results obtained in the present study can be provided to other teachers as a reference and learning direction when teaching ecology courses.  相似文献

Language learning beliefs play a very important role in influencing learners’ attitudes, motivations and also shape their experiences and actions in classroom.Successful learners develop insightful beliefs about language learning process, their own abilities and the use of effective strategies. However language learning beliefs can be different because of individual learner differences and contextual diversity. This study aimed at exploring beliefs about language learning held by pre-service teachers.159 pre-service teachers majoring in English at Qianan Normal College for Nationalities participated in the study.A 34-item questionnaire adapted from Horwitz’s(1987) BALLI was used to collect the data. The results were reported and discussed from the following five aspects:1) beliefs about foreign language aptitude,2) beliefs about difficulty of language learning,3) beliefs about nature of language learning,4) beliefs about learning and communication strategies, and 5) beliefs about motivation and expectations.Suggestions on pedagogical implications and for future research were also indicated.  相似文献

Arts education is an essential component of a comprehensive education, requiring highly skilled teachers to achieve quality arts integration (Andrews, 2004). It equips students with skills necessary for the 21st century workforce, allowing nations to develop the human resources necessary to tap their cultural capital (UNESCO, 2006). A world trend however suggests that arts teaching by pre-service teachers is subject to lack of confdence, motivation and knowledge (Henessy, Rolfe & Chedoy, 2001; Russell-Bowie, 2004). Greater recognition of confirming and disconfirming experiences that shape pre-service teachers' self-efficacy beliefs for arts education is necessary. This paper provides insights into a research project that attempts to contribute towards filling this void in order to improve teacher effectiveness in the arts domain. After the first semester of teacher training, pre-service teachers completed a questionnaire based on their personal teaching beliefs for instructional design, student engagement and classroom management in arts education. Findings provide a greater understanding of how pre-service teachers regulate their own behaviour for teaching the arts, acting as validation beliefs of capabilities.  相似文献

Over the last decade, there has been an increased interest in investigation of assessment for learning. However, to date, there are still very few studies that investigated assessment for language learning or formative language assessment, focusing particularly on: (a) effects of formative assessment on learners' linguistic development and on teachers' teaching and lesson planning; (b) variables influencing the frequency and extent of effectiveness of formative assessment; (c) teachers' and learners' views on teacher feedback and learner peer- and self- assessment; and (d) fulfilment of the requirements set in the official United Kingdom (UK) policy documents on effective teaching and assessment of learners with English as an additional language (EAL), also known as English as an second language (ESL) in the United States (U.S.), in real classrooms. This article addressed these issues, and thus, extended the limited knowledge base on formative language assessment research to date. Moreover, through examining classroom-embedded language assessment processes from various perspectives, this research paper made a link between two research areas: (a) language testing and assessment; and (b) second language acquisition, also a relatively neglected field of research. This paper investigated two intact primary immersion classrooms, with learners as young as 8-10 years old and teachers whose teaching roles in the classrooms differed; two teachers were mainstream classroom teachers (CTs) and one was a mainstream teacher with specific responsibilities for language development in the school. The data were derived from literacy, numeracy, and science lessons through classroom observations and from the research participants through interviews. The data were firstly transcribed and coded qualitatively and then analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings revealed that various language assessment strategies were used regardless of the subject area of the les  相似文献

This paper reports a qualitative study in response to the growing research interest in teacher learning. Informed by a sociocultural perspective, teacher learning is considered as a process of identity construction in the paper. This paper taps into the development of teacher identity embedded in teacher learning and views reflection as a social practice for enhancing teacher learning. Through a close analysis of a selected discussion thread, this paper aims to demonstrate that teacher-learners' reflective practice in the online learning community provided a site of engagement for developing their professional identity and shaping the practice of teaching in their process of learning to teach.  相似文献

In the process of classroom education, setting questions in class is an important teaching method, which is used in the whole teaching activity and acts as the link between the thoughts of teachers and students. Hence, creating a wisdom class and using according questions to aid the class are of great significance to both students and teachers. In this paper, 40 elementary students from the 9th grade and 10 of their teachers were studied and the result showed that learning requirements facing to the whole class and students' learning beliefs are essential principles, and questions should be set by having an exhaustive understanding of the textbook, giving previous homework, creating a thinking atmosphere, and setting a proper difficulty for the students. The proper time to set questions is when the old knowledge and new knowledge of the student conflict in the awareness of the student, when the teacher wants to spread thought, and when the teacher wants to make a conclusion.  相似文献

This paper is based on three observations and independent thinking of the classroom teaching of the author’s colleagues. It attempts to examine how macro and micro contexts affect teaching and learning in the classroom. The author focuses the discussion on three aspects:(i)the present EFL contextual setting in China;(ii)the influence of the evaluation system on both teachers and students;(iii)his own beliefs as a teacher. Finally,he comes to the implications that teachers should often reflect on their teaching by means of observing other teachers’teachings; In order to bring more effective teaching and learning to the class,Teachers should change their class from a teacher-centered one to a students-centered one.  相似文献

The current paper reports on a qualitative study examining in-service and pre-service teachers perceptions about changes in the learning process caused by the involvement of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in Estonian schools. Based on five in-service and five pre-service teachers' interviews, findings indicate some positive, some negative and some in-between (considered by teachers as positive from one side and as negative from the other side) changes in the student's and teacher's roles in the learning process and teaching process. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Content analysis was used as the data analysis method. The paper discusses estimated changes by both groups in the Estonian educational system. A comparison of in-service and pre-service teachers' opinions has been provided.  相似文献

Conceptions are analyzed as being the emergences from interactions between three poles: scientific knowledge (K), values (V) and social practices (P). The teachers' beliefs and values have a direct influence on the way of understanding and teaching a topic. These beliefs must be taken into account in the content and strategies of the teacher's formation. In this paper, the authors discuss the importance of studying and analyzing these conceptions and present the results of the research on teachers' and future teachers' conceptions about sexual health education. In this topic, the conceptions could be deeply rooted not only in scientific knowledge but also in value systems and social practices, because teachers often refuse to teach the ethical, psychological, economic and social issues not strictly reducible to biology, such as sexuality health. The authors used a questionnaire prepared jointly within the European project Biohead-Citizen.  相似文献

The authors report an implemented environment for computer-assisted authoring of test items and provide a brief discussion about the applications of NLP techniques for computer assisted language learning. Test items can serve as a tool for language learners to examine their competence in the target language. The authors apply techniques for natural language processing to help teachers prepare test items for elementary Chinese. Teachers can then compile the test items to form test sheets for formal examinations on the Internet. The system can record the results of the tests for post-test analysis of students' achievements so that teachers can gain .insight into the distributions over students' competence levels and can adjust the teaching activities for the students who may need individualized care. At this moment, the system offers assistance for authoring test items for basic listening comprehension, cloze tests, incorrect-character identification, sentence reconstruction and usage of measure words.  相似文献

This review of research into changes in language teacher beliefs reveals that carefully designed language teacher education courses are effective in reconstructing teachers’prior beliefs. When teaching practices are added to the teacher education programs, when adjustments are made to the structure of teacher education courses, and when research practices are incorporated in teacher education programs, significant changes are seen in teachers’beliefs.  相似文献

The distinction of’native speakers’(NSs) and’non-native speakers’(NNSs),and their roles in English teaching has led to great discussion in the field of EFL and ESL recently.Despite the limitations of this distinction,it is meaningful in the field of language teaching when both groups of speakers’potential advantages and disadvantages in language teaching are equally recognized. The distinction of NSs and NNSs English teachers tells about the background information of the two groups, and therefore enables the teachers and professions to assess the pros and cons of them in real teaching practice,so as to initiate possible cooperation or to design reasonable syllabi for teacher training programs.  相似文献

Understanding and alleviating the influence of culture in a language-learning environment is not simply which a case of ensuring effective communication, it is also imperative to ensure that the students are actually able to learn the language according to their own culturally specific learning methods. Effective communication between student and teacher may not produce the desired results if the learner is unable to incorporate this new knowledge into their existing understanding of the world. This paper is mainly about the element of culture in the process of language teaching. In the meanwhile, the author will present the ideas and examples on its implications for the roles of English teachers.  相似文献

Since linguistics is defined as the scientific study of language, it is obvious that such a study would help a lot in language teaching and learning. Linguistics defines the nature of language learning in connection with various linguistic theories therefore it helps the teachers to choose teaching methods and techniques. Furthermore, the process of linguistic study can be summarized as follows: First, certain linguistic facts are observed, which are found to display some similarities and generalizations, hypotheses are formulated to account for these facts; and then make sure these hypotheses; finally a rule of linguistics is constructed. Our students are doing the same. They imitated what the teacher did and did what the teacher told them to. At last, they bear the usage of English in minds.  相似文献

English speaking has been paid more attention today, especially in the age of globalization. Teachers are attempting to find out more effective methods to enhance the teaching results of English speaking. Facing the great demands and present difficulties of oral English classes, teachers have to conduct more study and practice to find out what roles that an oral English teacher has to take in the oral English classroom. Compared with the traditional teaching role in the English classroom, an oral English teacher has to fulfill more than one role in the classroom teaching so as to provide better learning conditions for students. Lacking more exposure to the real interaction with native speakers, students expect the oral English teacher to be a creator of the language environment. With various teaching and learning activities in the oral English classroom, the teacher has to be a good organizer to ensure every student to achieve improvement. An oral English teacher also has to correct students’language errors while ensuring the smooth progress of the classroom teaching. Only when an oral English teacher make clear what roles he or she has to take in the classroom can he or she achieve effective teaching.  相似文献
