The novel Sons and Lovers, which is Lawrence’s best acclaimed work, is of autobiographic air. It is called the best representation of Sigmund Freud’s "Oedipus Complex"theory by critics, though Lawrence denied having read Freud before writing the novel. However, it can shed new light on the novel when read in a different point of view. Paul’s road to become a real man can not be separated from his mother, Miriam and Clara, who is Paul’s first and second loves respectively. This article will analyze the novel in feminist perspective and concentrate on the three women’s sacrifice to Paul’s growth in a man-centered society, in hope of better understanding the intension of the novel.  相似文献

Other is an important concept in Lacan’s psychology theory, which plays a critical role in a subject’s identity formation. The formation of a subject’s self-identity is based on other, initially its mother, the absence of the other will cause the subject’s identity loss and the reconstruction on the new other. Therefore, this article analyzes the main subject Florens’ identity loss and her identity reconstruction by applying Lacan’s concept of other.  相似文献

As a carefully designed work, Flannert O’Connor’s short story“A Good Man is Hard to Find”is a brilliant example for skillfully using narrative techniques to convey her Catholic faith. Mieke Bal’s theories of time in narratology provide a fresh perspective to explores the characterizations in Flannert O’Connor’s“A Good Man is Hard to Find”. Time functions greatly to the characterizations of the characters through the narrative text in terms of the story and the fabula. It helps to present the characters’ personalities by playing with the sequential ordering, rhythm and frequency. By using these narrative techniques, grandmother’s selfishness, her moral inanition and her considerations that she is morally superior to others is fully expressed to the reader as well as Misfit’s struggling and renascence to his disbeliefs of God and so on.  相似文献

The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’s first successful play. He uses several symbols in this play and enforces the tragic effect of the characters. Most people think that the unicorn represents Laura herself, especially her peculiarity, but to my understanding, it’s more like Jim O’Connor, rare and special yet tragic. My essay provides a new interpretation to the symbolic meaning of the unicorn, highlighting the tragic and fragile feature of it.  相似文献

Northrop Frye’ s four narrative forms:romance, tragedy, irony, and comedy can help explain the problematic structure of Margaret Atwood’ s novel Cat’ s Eye,in which the narrative,as well as certain other literary features, indicates that it is essentially a come dy - a story of how a hero forms a desirable new society in the face of strong opposition. But this comedy is also ironic.  相似文献

In Araby, Joyce’s well written style is exemplified, as well as his deep thoughts. From the perspective of literary devices, Joyce employs"impressionism"and"epiphany"which are special artistic devices he has applied in this story. The author discusses the plot, setting in Araby, and analyzes the characters in it. Through a thorough study of Araby, the thesis is in order to push forward the understanding of Joyce’s purpose in writing the story. The discussion of impressionism and epiphany in this thesis is an attempt to focus the discussion on the story alone, combing the inner unity and integrity of this device, providing better understanding of the functions and management of such new innovations, thus a better understanding of the work itself.  相似文献

Greimas’s Semiotic Square is a new approach in analyzing literary works.Based on Sassure and Jacnson’s claim on binary opposition,Gereimas extends it to four actants and adds contradictory relationships.By assign meanings to the four actants,an analysis of the complicated relationship between the roles in a text can be made and a revelation of the theme of the text can be realized.Previous studies of this novel take it as an excellent work revealing loneliness and isolation is thought to be the basic condition of human existence.Other study covers the effects of the unrequited love.Quiet differently, this paper tries to interpret this novel by Greimas’semiotic square and thereby revealing the widely accepted theme of this novel that isolation and loneliness is the final destiny of human being in modern society.  相似文献

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning, yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original, but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later, based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary, just like the fragments of a vessel, responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.  相似文献

Jude the Obscure was Thomas Hardy’s last novel creation, and he spent eight year from preparation to publication.Although this novel received a lot of criticisms instead of praises when it came out,it also can be considered as Thomas Hardy’s classical works. The theme of this novel is so brave to explore the existing women’s living circumstances in that time. With the industrial revolution in England, new thoughts and ideas sprang out.Women were no longer belonging to husband and family, and they began to be aware of their social roles and reconsider their identity in society and marriage. The aim of the paper is to analyze this novel from the feministic perspective and re-read the character of Sue Bridehead in the light of the theory"the girl of the period".  相似文献

A cognitive interpretation of the basic translation strategy, domestication and foreignization, is elaborated in this paper. It is pro posed that based on differences in linguistic presentation and cultural connotation, the application of translation strategy is determined by the style of the source text (ST) and the translator’s performance, both of which are generated from individualized style of construe, decided by a range of experiences. So great importance should be attached to experience and construe. Such an interpretation is proposed to pro vide a new perspective to study translation strategy and initiate a better comprehension of the ST and translation.  相似文献
