ABSTRACT Predictions about the end of libraries point to a real crisis, but assign the wrong cause. Libraries will not be displaced by technology like Google, but can be undermined by librarians’ own reactions to patron demand for Google-like experiences. Librarians can respond with a “weak model” that prioritizes the satisfaction of patrons, or a “strong model” that recognizes higher values rooted in the status of librarianship as a profession. Although recent trends favor the dominance of the weak model, only by embracing the strong model can librarians survive the challenges that threaten libraries. 相似文献

New York-based Brentano’s Bookstore (1850–1996) demonstrated growth and resilience when the economy or their business went up or down, but Brentano’s never adopted the deep discounting that became a modus operandi for American booksellers and book clubs from the 1930s onwards and especially after World War II. Resistance to deep discounting spelled doom for Brentano’s, particularly when Barnes and Noble became a competitor in the 1980s. Over many decades, Brentano’s experimented successfully with innovative retailing techniques, including bookstores on ocean liners plying Atlantic routes, serving upscale, multi-lingual, international readers. The on-land bookstore chain, in several cities, peaked at 28 stores in the 1980s and was known for its well read, impeccably dressed, courteous staff, setting a model of effective handselling. Tension between appealing to rarefied tastes of elite consumers vs. meeting practical demands of ordinary shoppers manifested in Brentano’s bookselling tactics. Conglomeration in US publishing eventually dissolved Brentano’s publishing operation as well. 相似文献

A discussion of state and local taxation of broadcast stations appeared in the very first issue of the Journal of Broadcasting (1:70–74, Winter 1956–57), and is now updated to cover important cases and findings of recent years in a number of states. The taxes proposed raise not only questions of income dillution, but of federal vs. state/local regulation of broadcasting. Bibliometric data indexed through the Institute for Scientific Information were analyzed for 45 communication journals. Several measures were included to identify the most widely cited journals in the field, including (a) journal impact factor, (b) five-year journal impact, (c) article influence, and (d) journal relatedness. Results serve to expand on findings by Feeley (2008) with respect to overall and within-field influence of communication journals whose analysis covered 2002 through 2005 and 19 journals. Results indicate stability in journal impact ratings over time and several journals (e.g., Communication Research, Human Communication Research, Journal of Communication, Communication Monographs, and Communication Theory) are highly central in the communication journal citation network. 相似文献

This article explores how Ireland’s first LGBT radio station, Open FM, attempted to offer LGBT radio in a heteronormative media landscape. It uses semi-structured interviews with two of the stations founders as well as posts from online LGBT message bulletin boards to argue how Open FM ultimately became ambivalent about its LGBT status and adopted a dualcasting strategy. Despite its ambitions to be a community-led radio station for Ireland's LGBT community, the dualcasting strategy of the station framed many of its endeavors between the mainstream standards of radio broadcasting and the community of interest that their licence claimed to serve. 相似文献

The authors examine, based on a survey of users, the e-reserve management software landscape. Library course reserve processing staff was surveyed to determine what management systems, if any, are being used and how effective they are in meeting the needs of the library, the faculty, and the students. This paper examines the extent to which the South African Library and Information Science (LIS) agenda maps to the national agenda for the reconstruction and development of the country, which is geared to the elimination of poverty and inequality. The nation has been described as comprising two societies: the one modern and well developed, the other characterised by masses of people living in dire poverty. The mandate of LIS in South Africa includes supporting and stimulating the technological and information development of all communities and providing effective LIS education to meet this goal. The government has embraced the concept of the Information Society, emphasising the link between economic growth and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and has pointed to the need for information literacy education. We present a critique of the fit between LIS policies and practices (including the curriculum) and the needs of an emerging democracy and its development goals, challenged by the duality of globalisation and marginalisation. 相似文献

In this study, we track the severity of partisan polarization in the following of legislators on Twitter during the initial two years of Twitter's introduction to South Korea. We examine the pattern of co-following among Twitter users following members of the 18th Korean National Assembly at three time points. We collected a complete list of all followers for each legislator and constructed their co-following network. We also supplemented our following data with survey data. This allowed us to match the same Twitter user's following behavior with their individual level attributes. Our aggregate level analysis showed that the severity of polarization in Twitter following of National Assembly members lessened from Time 1 to Time 3. We also discovered that, even when tracking only the ‘original’ followers, cross-party following has increased over time. The survey-based results reaffirm our conclusion based on the aggregate data. 相似文献

Antiterrorism legislation passed at the end of 2001—the U.S.A. Patriot Act—has serious implications for privacy. Many of the law’s provisions expand the government’s existing ability to intercept wire, oral, and electronic communications relating to terrorism and other crimes, to share criminal investigative information, and to conduct electronic surveillance. While the changes are controversial, and some are of questionable constitutionality, the surveillance provisions of the new law mostly make changes in degree and not kind. Other aspects of privacy and privacy law remained unchanged. Laws affecting how the private sector gathers, stores, and uses personal information for private purposes were not modified. After passage of the antiterrorism law, other legislation expanded privacy protections in other areas. Further events and legislation will affect privacy rights and interests, and some protections may be eroded while others are improved. 相似文献

Summary What will be the future of ONIX? Some argue that wider industry acceptance will lead to increased efficiencies in the transfer
of book data, which will ultimately benefit book sales. ONIX still has to overcome many challenges: its implementation cost
is high, whole-salers and aggregators are still using different spreadsheets and information sources. Furthermore, MS Excel
as an alternative solution is widely available and accepted by the industry. Small publishers need more education and a straightforward
demonstration of ONIX’s return on investment. An outreaching of the helping hand of professional organizations is strongly
suggested to foster the adoption process among small players. It is the role of the AAP and BISG to get their memberships
to think about what is good for all members as a whole throughout the industry. As an organization BISG can recommend, educate,
and promote the standard. It cannot, however, bring pressure or demand organizations use it. Publishers, retailers, and wholesalers
make those decisions for themselves and quite apparently the majority do not yet see the rewards. Market players need to determine
the cost versus benefit and as long as distributors and retailers agree on receiving other formats, ONIX will never take a
strong hold in the marketplace. After all, publishers should compete against each other with good books and not with multiple

This paper engages discourses about the nature of creative work through a case study of creative worker freelancing on Upwork, an online marketplace. The analysis begins by contextualizing the growth of freelancing in a transformation of capitalism to a mode of flexible accumulation. It is framed against neoliberal narratives about the creative economy, including promises of financial success and freedom from rigid Fordism. An exploration of the characteristics of technology-mediated work on Upwork, including contract structure, wages, consistency of work, risk-management strategies, and profiles of clients and freelancers follows. The findings suggest that despite the company’s emphases on efficiency, flexibility, and freedom from the physical office, freelancers face significant trade-offs in undertaking such work, notably its infrequency, barriers to high wages, and intense global competition. The discussion addresses structural drivers of precarity in the marketplace and of its ongoing success. 相似文献

The annual report captures the rapid growth over the past 5 years with a focus on the past 2 year of the digital publishing
industry in China. The growth is evaluated in relation to new revenues generated, the size of the market segments represented
by e-journals, eBooks, digital newspapers, blogs, online music and games. The leading companies in each of these sectors are
identified as there is still a reluctance of traditional publishes to move more aggressively into the new media publishing.
Finally, a review of the challenges that the lack of copyright present to the industry as legal systems have not caught up
