Increasingly universities are being asked to demonstrate accountability through implementation of quality improvement procedures that include student evaluation questionnaires and peer observation. However, a review of research suggests that these procedures, in themselves, do not necessarily lead to improvement. Excellence in modern universities may be more effectively promoted by focusing on facilitating academics' growth in teaching expertise, perhaps first by encouraging staff to demonstrate accountability as part of a systematic programme of teacher education. Academic or staff developers can play an important role in implementing a teacher education programme, and encouraging and supporting a culture of academic leadership. 相似文献

The rapid changes facing higher education are placing increased focus on the quality of the student experience, achieving learning outcomes, and employability expectations. As a result, academics in teaching roles are increasingly measured on performance via student evaluations amplifying attention on professional development initiatives for academics. One such initiative is the Peer Assisted Teaching Scheme currently in practice across many Australian universities. The critical component of the scheme is the establishment of teaching goals that provide focus and direction for the peer partnership. This study addresses two questions: (1) Around which aspects do academics set their goals for teaching improvement? and (2) How do academics’ goals align with the SMART goal-setting framework that is prescribed in the scheme? Findings from five Australian universities showed that goals align with a variety of educational areas yet many were underdeveloped, or misaligned with the proposed strategy. The implications of this are discussed and a framework for setting education goals for teaching improvement is developed. 相似文献

地方本科院校占全国普通本科院校的八成以上,其办学质量如何,对提高高等教育质量、建设高等教育强国至关重要。当前,影响地方本科院校办学质量的主要问题有：教学和科研发展不均衡,导致教学弱化、学术异化;人才培养中心地位不到位,“以学生为中心”的理念和实践亟需加强;大学内部治理中,教授治学、民主管理的理念尚未有效落实;高校管理的专业化水平不高,需要进一步更新观念,提高执行力和创新力;高校“去行政化”的核心在于行政权力和学术权力各得其所,这需要制度建设和大学文化的有力支撑。只有切实解决以上问题,地方本科院校才能提高办学质量,实现科学发展。 相似文献

鉴于混合学习模式在普通高校的应用优势和趋势,混合学习已成为高校教学改革的重要内容。基于高校网络教学平台的混合学习模式应用,将为高校教学改革提供一个新的思路。通过分析高校师范专业必修课程《现代教育技术》混合学习设计需求,构建了基于高校网络教学平台的《现代教育技术》课程混合学习模式,设计了该课程的混合学习实施流程图,并从混合学习的学习环境、学习内容、学习资源、学习活动、学习评价等方面,阐述该课程是如何基于网络教学平台进行混合学习实践。课程混合学习实施结果显示:教师教育技术能力、网络课程内容设计、网络课程学习导航、网络学习活动设计与组织、及时的师生互动交流、学生的信息素养、学生网络学习参与度、师生对网络学习的认可度等因素对混合学习的有效实施有重要影响。基于高校网络教学平台开展混合学习的对策主要包括加强网络教师培训;重视混合学习环境设计;强化混合学习活动设计与组织;提供在线学习辅导与支持;明确学校激励措施与网络教学发展政策。 相似文献

Leadership in learning and teaching is a strategic priority for Australian universities, in that it is critical for improving the quality of higher education. Opportunities for academic staff to prepare for such leadership, especially during the early phases of their career, are not well embedded. This article reports on the implementation of a leadership development program for emerging leaders of learning and teaching in higher education that developed and utilised a professional learning conversation protocol. The results demonstrate that participating in the conversations had a range of positive outcomes for participants and the organisation in which the program was offered. 相似文献

Many higher education institutions worldwide require that all academic staff undergo a peer observation of teaching each academic year. Within one department in a university in the South of England, questions have arisen about the value and purpose of the traditional ‘peer observation’ process, and as a result a new voluntary system of ‘peer development’ has been introduced. This paper explains the rationale underpinning the new peer development process, and explores its worth and value to those who have participated in it as a mechanism for professional development. An investigation was undertaken into how a process involving peer review and observation of teaching can be used to enhance academics’ teaching practices and inform professional development activities at an organization level. We describe an innovative and highly structured approach to gathering evidence of pedagogic practice from academic peer observers, students, and reflections on practice. Collating multiple perspectives on multiple instances of observed teaching a focused analysis is undertaken to provide an insight into development opportunities for a teaching culture and context. The investigation was undertaken in response to organizational needs in an increasingly competitive higher education sector where strong quality statements around teaching and learning outcomes are a matter of importance for organizational success. Higher education is becoming a major driver of economic competitiveness in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy. Maintaining the competitive edge has seen an increase in public accountability of higher education institutions through the mechanism of ranking universities based on the quality of their teaching and learning outcomes. As a result, assessment processes are under scrutiny, creating tensions between standardisation and measurability and the development of creative and reflective learners. These tensions are further highlighted in the context of large undergraduate subjects, learner diversity and time-poor academics and students. Research suggests that high level and complex learning is best developed when assessment, combined with effective feedback practices, involves students as partners in these processes. This article reports on a four-phase, cross-institution and cross-discipline project designed to embed peer-review processes as part of the assessment in two large, under-graduate accounting classes. Using a social constructivist view of learning, which emphasises the role of both teacher and learner in the development of complex cognitive understandings, we undertook an iterative process of peer review. Successive phases built upon students’ feedback and achievements and input from language/learning and curriculum experts to improve the teaching and learning outcomes. 相似文献

Review of academic departments is routine in most institutions of higher education. Few colleges and universities regularly review nonacademic units. A major research university has recently developed a process for the systematic review of nonacademic units. Online teaching and learning practices in Asian universities are different from that in western universities. Western universities give emphasis on student-student interaction for learning. Online courses offered by most Asian universities are a kind of mixed mode that comprised simultaneous face-to-face tutorials and online interaction facility. In this situation most students use the online facility to collect resources and to contact their teachers. The quantity of student-student interaction was sporadic in many courses. So research is needed to improve the situation and create an environment for students where they can learn what peer group interaction is and practice it. In this Reflection on Practice I argue the case for using the principles of scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) to serve as a framework for evaluating and designing peer observation programmes in higher education contexts. I suggest that for peer observation to be an activity worthy of SoTL, it should be systematic, collaborative, rigorous, peer reviewed, and focused on learning about teaching to improve teaching. Using a set of criteria to critique a current peer observation programme I account for its strengths and weaknesses and suggest a way forward for elevating the status of peer observation. 相似文献
