Academic libraries are facing increasing pressure to prove their value in the face of outdated public perceptions, financial challenges, and competition from other information providers. They are investing time, energy, and money to advertise their resources and services in a variety of ways. Despite these efforts, few libraries know whether these investments are meeting their objectives. Academic libraries should follow the advertising assessment practices used by businesses today to assess the cost, interaction, and outcomes of their advertising to determine its effectiveness. Summary The management issues facing those who deal with serials in special libraries may be common to all special libraries, unique to the particular discipline, or shared by all libraries struggling to deal with serials in the 1990s. A law librarian and a medical librarian described the history, nature, and use of serial literature in their respective subject areas, and discussed important customer issues facing their libraries, including the financial aspects. They were joined by a vendor's representative who summarized the similarities and differences in these library situations from a vendor's perspective, including the opportunities and limitations of the vendor/special library relationship. 相似文献

Best practices endorse using “due diligence” scrutiny of a company to establish the viability of the corporation prior to releasing large sums of money in a buy–sell transaction. Theoretically libraries should be able to utilize this approach to ensure protection against bankruptcy such as seen in the recent Swets failure and the earlier RoweCom/divine collapse. Using the Swets company as a case study, the steps needed to be taken to complete the due diligence process are enumerated and critiqued. The conclusion is drawn that a comprehensive financial appraisal in the current serials acquisitions framework requires expertise, effort, and investment that are outside the bounds of what many would consider to be reasonable. 相似文献

The second annual survey of serial resources indicates that growth of serial collections in university libraries is negligible. College libraries attempted to maintain "steady state" collections. Public libraries seemed to fare somewhat better, there were few cancellations. Only the two national institutions, Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and the National Library of Canada, achieved a systematic growth in their serial resources. The recent economic crisis has affected many institutions, including the once thought recession-resistant higher education. Declines in funding have forced libraries to look at ways to cut spending. As the public face of the library, access services departments face particularly tough decisions when the library makes financial cuts. Reduced spending in other departments can increase the workload for reserves and interlibrary loan departments. Significant changes in staffing or services can create a negative public image. Using the lens of Relational Dialectics Theory, this study sought to uncover how competing U.S. cultural financial discourses are negotiated in people’s everyday conversations with their romantic partner. The investigation uncovered that in multiple and varied ways, participants understood money to be a major source of tension in their romantic relationships. One overarching discursive struggle animated participants’ financial talk with their partners: “money is everything” versus “money isn’t everything.” Within this struggle, participants communicatively negotiated the cultural value of money in an attempt to marginalize its power and potential negative influences on relational and economic well-being. Although money is critical in helping people meet their basic needs, this study suggests that deemphasizing the importance of money as all-consuming and omnipotent has the potential to alter couples’ financial and relational well-being. 相似文献

The Request for Proposal (RFP) process provides librarians a rational method of finding the right vendor for major contracts because it gives librarians the opportunity to look at all aspects of book and serial purchasing. It allows librarians to select vendors on the basis of customer service, electronic or computing services, and financial condition, as well as discounts and service charges. The educational benefits of the RFP process are so immense that such a process should be considered by libraries whether or not it is mandated by state law. Determining how many and which RFPs will be needed, planning the timeline, selecting the RFP committee, planning on-site presentations, writing the RFP, developing the vendor selection criteria, and evaluating responses are a few of the elements of the RFP process. 相似文献
