This paper applies the mathematical technique of Data Envelopment Analysis to the problem of appraisal in Higher Education. The technique can be understood as an idealised self and peer appraisal: evaluating others in the same way that we would optimally evaluate ourselves relative to those others. The technique is applied to examples of student and staff appraisal. Although the main focus of this article is on the technique itself (its rationale, the prerequisites for use, and the insights that it yields), we also discuss the wider implications of having and using such a technique to assist appraisal. 相似文献

This paper presents two new techniques for use in personnel selection. One is a simple graphical technique which non-technical personnel can use to help in deciding how many minority applicants to admit to an institution. The other is a large-scale computer technique which an institution can use to increase personnel diversity on many variables (including culture) simultaneously. Both techniques appear to have major advantages over the particular technique this author advocated previously (1971). However, the new techniques are based on the same general view the author has expressed earlier (1971, 1973): that personnel selection questions concerning culture must be handled rationally—that is, by human judgment—rather than by mechanical formulas. This paper deals with a teaching approach aimed to help students become aware of targeted techniques of significance in problem solving. The teaching approach is to present a series of tasks that all can be solved by applying the same technique. Two levels of prompting are used; first for the students to realize solutions without necessarily being cognizant of the technique, second for them to perform further mathematical modeling that should highlight the similarities in solution shared by all the tasks. In the fieldwork, a teaching sequence based on this approach is implemented for a technique involving enumeration via constructing a bijection. Certain factors in the students' behavior suggested that their realization of the technique at the end was not as secure as desired. Some modifications of the teaching sequence are proposed to counter these factors. 相似文献

This paper defines the Paired Reading technique and comments upon minor variations. The historical antecedents for the technique in the international literature are reviewed and the technique is considered in the context of relevant background theory and empirical research. The main strands of theory regarding how and why Paired Reading works are reviewed in the light of summary data on process and reading style changes during PR projects. It is concluded that the effects of Paired Reading are mediated by a number of different factors, and the technique should therefore be widely philosophically acceptable. 相似文献
