This study tested the proposition that national similarity between counselor and client results in improved counseling outcome.
Using a repeated-measures, quasi-experimental design, eight female counselors (four Turkish, four American) saw 16 volunteer,
expatriate female American clients for single, individual counseling sessions. Results indicated no differences on (a) clients’
and counselors’ ratings of working alliance and of progress on goals, or (b) clients’ ratings of utilization intent as a function
of counselor nationality. Irrespective of nationality, clients’ ratings of working alliance were higher than their counselors.
These results echo a trend suggesting that clients’ preferences for cultural/ethnic similarity dissipate as the research methodology
approximates actual counseling sessions. Additionally, local mental health service providers may be a viable resource for
expatriate Americans. 相似文献

Counseling services in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have focused on counseling in the elementary and secondary schools.
To date, the idea of the private practitioner of mental health counseling has been virtually nonexistent. However, education
officials at the University of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been exploring the option of following the international
trends of preparing students for mental health counseling services, with special emphasis in marriage and family. A counselor
education degree would allow individuals to operate private practices to address various concerns that impact individuals
within the society at large. No instruments that measure perceptions of counseling from an international perspective were
found for the purposes of this study. Therefore, it was necessary for the authors to devise and test a new tool. Surveys were
completed by a sample of 141 undergraduate students regarding their perceptions of the importance of counseling in UAE society
and the role of the counselor in society and other general questions regarding perceptions of counseling. With this initial
effort, psychometric properties of the ‘Perceptions about Counseling Survey’ appeared promising. Results revealed that students
had a favorable view toward the role of the counselor in UAE society. Results further revealed that students perceived the
counseling profession as favorable. Given that the participants were predominately female, the results were analyzed from
the social and cultural perspective of women in Arab society and the social psychological theory of ‘attitude’ is considered

Three female tenure-track faculty members at a Hispanic-Serving Institution explored how their cultural backgrounds inform
their pedagogical approaches toward equity. They drew upon Mills’s (1959) and Collins’s (1993) frameworks to examine how their personal biographies, local social contexts, and broader systemic institutions affect their
teaching processes for diverse students. These teaching processes include limiting assumptions about students, encouraging
students to consider their own personal biographies in relation to the social world, welcoming students’ multiple modes of
expression, serving as role models, and challenging inequities in schooling. They conclude with recommendations for enhancing

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the instructional effects of using animations, static figures, PowerPoint bulletins,
and e-plus software as chemistry texts with the aid of computer-based technology. This study analyzed the characteristics
of students involved in three multimedia courses and their achievement and attitude toward chemistry and learning chemistry.
The three samples included in this study involved 257 undergraduate engineering students enrolled in the courses during the
academic year in which the study occurred. The results indicate that: (a) students acquired a better understanding of targeted
chemistry concepts during the multimedia courses, (b) some categories of students, based on their major area of study, computer
use, and attendance status at orientation achieved significantly (p < 0.05) higher post-test scores when adjusted for pre-test performance, and (c) significant differences and Cohen’s effect
sizes in attitudes toward chemistry and learning chemistry were detected for students’ level of computer use, disposition
toward computer multimedia, gender, and attendance at the multimedia orientation session. It appears to be helpful to incorporate
computer-based multimedia (animations, images, sounds) teaching while utilizing constructivist design principles to facilitate
students’ chemistry understanding and attitude toward chemistry and learning chemistry. 相似文献

This study sought to examine the views of school counselors in international school settings; international schools being
those that enroll students from varying nationalities (both English speaking and non-English speaking countries) and follow
an American/International college preparatory education curriculum. Results were pursued in regard to three important areas:
(1) mental health needs of students (e.g., coping with cultural transitions, aggression, self-esteem), (2) their own professional
development needs (e.g., multicultural development, networking), and (3) their interactions with teachers, administrators,
and parents (e.g., lack of knowledge of the counselor’s role, lack of trust in the counselor, lack of teamwork). Implications
for supporting international school counselors are provided.

Counselors who are culturally encapsulated are likely to create client mistrust and to misinterpret clients’ cultural norms.
This article presents the Cultural De-Centering Model (CDCM) as a constructive-developmental method for helping future counselors
to be less ethnocentric in their work. The goal of the CDCM is to increase counselors’ cultural relativism. Through the CDCM
counselors are asked to name and challenge their assumptions about race/ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and
social class. They are then asked to re-examine the foundations of those assumptions and begin constructing culturally de-centered

In this article we argue that early childhood educators, under the influence of last century’s grand universal theories of
child development, have not been attentive enough to the centrality of culture in children’s development. We discuss how the
exploration of contemporary developmental perspectives is critical to the field and illustrate cultural views of child development
based on cultural psychology. The goal of cultural psychology is to study the co-creation of human beings and cultures by
focusing on both mentalities and practices, on both culture and biology. Using this lens, we explore the implications that

Teachers’ knowing about students and their families is critical to ensuring relevant classroom instruction. The Family
Storytelling
through
Dichos approach is explored as a culturally and linguistically appropriate mechanism for learning about students’ backgrounds. This
article posits that this approach may be a viable one, since it is rooted in the Hispanic culture and language and integrates
three critical elements (a) familism, a core Hispanic cultural value; (b) storytelling, a vehicle for exploring families’

We investigated relationships among elementary teachers’ reading-related content knowledge (knowledge of literature and phonology),
their philosophical orientation toward reading instruction, their classroom practice, and their students’ learning. Correlations
showed little relationship between instructional philosophy and content knowledge, and little relationship between instructional
philosophy and classroom practice. However, relationships emerged between content knowledge and instruction, and between kindergarten
teachers’ phonological knowledge and their students’ reading achievement. We recommend that the recent focus on teacher’s
disciplinary knowledge be broadened to include teachers of beginning reading and that teachers be afforded opportunities to
develop the necessary knowledge base to teach reading effectively. 相似文献

This paper examines the ways in which Latino children’s literature portrays cultural models of bilingualism and identity affiliations
based on language and cultural practices. We focus attention the messages in seven children’s books about practices of and
attitudes toward Spanglish, standard Spanish, and individual and societal bilingualism. In addition, we analyze how characters
construct their cross-cultural identit(ies), based their language use and engagement in local and transnational cultural themes.
Using assertions based on cultural model analyses, we show how portrayals evident in these books inform and are informed by
larger cultural models of being bilingual and belonging to Latino bilingual communities in the U.S. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify the degree to which Jordanian school counselors were seen by teachers and principals
to possess and display leadership behaviors related to Bolman and Deal’s (1997) transformational ‘four framework approach’ to leadership. This was based on the view that such leadership would relate to
counselors’ effectiveness in their roles. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of teachers and principals designed
to assess counselor leadership on four key dimensions (i) structural leadership, (ii) human resources leadership, (iii) political
leadership, and (iv) symbolic leadership. The results of the study suggest high levels of transformational leadership among
Jordanian school counselors as perceived by both teachers and principals. Principals assessed the levels more highly than
teachers, with a significant difference evident. The results also showed a significant difference based on geographic area
of the participants, even though those from all areas rated counselor leadership quite highly. 相似文献

In this paper, market orientation in Croatian higher education (HE) is discussed within the context of stakeholder-oriented
management. Drawing on existing studies, the ‘classical’ empirical model, describing the market orientation of generic nonprofit
organisations, has been adapted to the contingencies of the Croatian HE sector. Empirical testing of the model, based on primary
data drawn from the majority of public institutions of higher learning in the country, reveals inadequate market orientation
toward the relevant stakeholders. Although social market orientation currently does not exist in Croatian HE institutions,
the empirical results confirm that it might be possible to initiate a ‘virtuous circle’, in which relevant market orientation
and stakeholder management practices, directed toward one or other of the stakeholders, simultaneously enhance orientation
toward the other stakeholders. Unfortunately, the current situation in HE is not satisfactory, which could hinder the implementation
of development of knowledge society in Croatia.

Connecting students’ cultural and community mathematical practices to school mathematics is a critical issue in mathematics
education. The goal of the study was to identify how teachers incorporate children’s cultural and out-of-school mathematics
in instruction. Four related practices were identified, and three drew on children’s cultural or out-of-school experiences:
(a) using these experiences as contexts for problems, (b) linking these experiences to school mathematics, and (c) identifying
embedded mathematical practices prominent in these experiences. A fourth category, teacher initiated situated settings, focused
on shared experiences using the classroom as a site of culture. Findings suggest that these practices represent varying levels
of complexity and that use of this framework might support teachers in better relating students’ cultural and out-of-school

Civic responsibility as an ideal of higher education is rarely considered through a cultural and theoretical lens. Swidler’s
(1986, American Sociological Review, 51: 273–286) framework linking ideology, culture and action was used in this ethnographic study of a research university
(a) to understand dominant institutional beliefs about civic responsibility and (b) to understand how institutional culture
contributes to a unique approach to civic responsibility. This study examined campus ideologies and cultural forms that addressed
five dimensions of civic responsibility: (a) knowledge and support of democratic values, systems and processes, (b) desire
to act beneficially in community and for its members, (c) use of knowledge and skills for societal benefit, (d) appreciation
for and interest in those unlike oneself, and (e) personal accountability. The “role model” approach emerged as a unique institutional
approach to civic responsibility and aligned with Swidler’s framework. Findings are significant for both organization studies

This study examines what a Korean heritage language school means to Korean immigrant families and their children, considering
Korean immigrant mothers’ perspectives on American early schooling. As part of an ethnographic research project on Korean-American
children’s peer culture in a heritage school, seven mothers, two guardians (grandmothers), and their young children were observed
and interviewed during one academic year. The analysis showed that the heritage language school functions as a social and
emotional support system, a buffer for reducing the detachment from parents, and a safety net for the Korean-American children’s
challenging lives. The Korean immigrant mothers also showed that they felt burdened by different cultural views of their children’s
behaviors, and described how their children were often considered problematic. The social and culture barriers caused by their
immigrant status profoundly influenced their reasons for sending their children to a Korean heritage language school. This
study suggests that teachers’ deep understanding of culturally different perspectives on children’s behaviors, along with
systematic social and emotional support, can help these children attain psychological well-being. 相似文献
