China's long and continuous cultural tradition offers scholars the special opportunity for cross-cultural studies in the long-term development of science. The Partner Group focuses on an exemplary case of such long-term development, the development of mechanical knowledge in China from antiquity to the early modern period. Research within the Partner Group is guided by a number of specific research questions, in particular the question of the interaction between practical and theoretical knowledge and the interaction between domestic and external knowledge traditions over a period of more than a millennium. In order to establish a cross-cultural perspective on the emergence and development of experiential science, the research is being coordinated with the current research project on the history of mechanical thinking at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science.  相似文献

As one of the first Partner Groups which were initiated to foster scientific exchange and interaction between the Max Planck Society (MPS) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Partner Group led by Lu Ke was established on April 1, 1999. During the past five years, the group has received substantial support from the CAS for equipment and from the MPS for personnel and travel expenses. Extensive and productive collaborations between the research staff and students of the Partner Group with several professors (departments) in the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research (MPI-MF) have led to significant advances in synthesis, mechanical properties, melting and superheating of nanostructured metals. The research is well recognized internationally and a substantial number of publications in high quality, peer-reviewed journals (including Science and Physical Review Letters) have resulted. At the MPI-MF, Ke Lu has collaborated with Manfred Ruhle and Reinhard Luck on crystallization studies, with Eric  相似文献

China's capacity for indigenous S&T innovation is believed to have been hampered by its lack of homegrown research facilities. To address the problem, a pilot program for the research and development of major S&T facilities has been launched at CAS. The kick-off meeting was held on 28 March in the CAS Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry in Beijing.  相似文献

The Partner Group works on topics in geometric analysis in cooperation with the corresponding research group at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. The partnership is based on several years of collaboration between several research groups in China (the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Fudan University, Wuhan University) and the group of Jurgen Jost in Leipzig. The group plays a pivotal role in the systematic advanced training of a whole generation of Chinese mathematicians. A particular focus is on variational problems from quantum field and superstring theories.  相似文献

The MPSICAS Partner Group on the Chemistry and Physics of Inorganic Solid State Materials was formally established in 2006 by the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, CAS (SIC-CAS) and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI-CPfS). The work of the group focused on two research directions within the scope of solid state chemistry and physics, namely intermetallic compounds and inorganic borophosphates and related compounds. Cooperative work has been carried out at both sides, either through the exchange of students and coworkers or by sharing research facilities. The outcomes of the collaboration are justified through joint and partner group facilitated publications, joint contributions at scientific conferences, co-supervised students, exchange visits of members and joint scientific reports.  相似文献

A project on the development of phosphors for color plasma display panels (PDP), conducted by researchers from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry (CIAC), CAS, has recently passed the evaluation in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province. The evaluation panel concluded that the PDP was advanced in technique and especially the red phosphor is on a par with the similar products manufactured by Japan in 2001 and shows better secondary characteristics.  相似文献

Thanks to their decades of painstaking efforts, Chinese S&T historians recently saw two book series on ancient Chinese history of science and technology and astronomy in print. Coordinated by the CAS Institute for the History of Natural Science, these anthologies are regarded as the most systematic and authoritative works ever authored by Chinese scholars to demonstrate the S&T development in China's history. The era of Quaternary glaciations actually refers to the current ice age. It directly affects the entire environment where we human beings live, and its studies have a significant meaning. Over the past 40 years, a research team led by Prof. SHI Yafeng from the CAS Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute has conducted pioneering studies on glacial and interglacial cycles and related environmental cbanges in China, especially on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Their findings added a glorious record to the development of China's Quaternary science and received a 2nd prize of the National Natural Science Awards in 2007.  相似文献

This paper briefly summarizes the history of wetland research, the evolvement of wetland science, and their impacts on the understanding of wetland biodiversity in China. A marsh is the key type and basic component of a wetland. Defining the marsh and wetland plants is the basis for understanding the wetland and its biodiversity. The comprehensive multiple factorial classification principles and the multiple developmental models of the wetland are two innovative feats achieved by Chinese scientists, and their application has further promoted ecological research. The CAS Wetland Research Center has made historic contributions to the study of the wetland and its biodiversity in China. Also, the paper discusses several important tasks of wetland and biodiversity research.  相似文献

The CAS has published the 2002 Science & Society series. The series, which consists of reports on scientific development, high-tech development and sustainable development, aims to introduce the world's scientific and technological (S&T) progress and developmental trends in 2001, review the changes in the frontiers of science and technology, pinpoint the main problems in research and development (R&D), and recount S&T development in China. Through the series, it is hoped that China's decades-long efforts at capacity building of sustainability will be made clear to the world, including theoretical exploration, contents, identification, dynamic monitoring, parametric system and quantitative analysis.  相似文献
