This research project focuses on the question: Which effects do teachers' attitudes have on students' academic self-concept and students' competences? The study is informed by the theoretical perspective that competences and individual skills can be improved especially when students and teachers are confident about the possibility of change of these variables and when teachers make this explicit as a central theme. In our intervention study, we investigate whether a change in the teaching and learning setting (moving from a focus on deficits to a focus on strengths) is able to enhance students' academic self-concept and students' competences, even across domains.  相似文献

Memetics also shed new light for linguists who begin to study the mechanism of language development from a brand new perspective:the combi-nation of language learning and language memes. The current essay attempts to apply the memetics to teaching of English writing, and to helping students con-struct knowledge and develop skills of writing by recitation and imitation of language memes.  相似文献

Key to renewed concern on the affective domain of education (Fensham, 2007) and on school graduates' readiness for a world of work (DEST, 2008; WDA, 2006) is the student's inclination-to-reflect when engaged in a learning or problem-solving task. Reflective learning is not new to education (Dewey, 1933; Ellis, 2001). Since the inclination-to-reflect may not be obvious even among adults at work (Seibert & Daudelin, 1999), how much more can we expect from school students? This article presents part of a research on secondary school students' inclination-to-reflect when engaged in chemistry learning tasks. The instrument used is the three-part Chemistry Learning and Thinking Instrument (CLTI). The first part seeks to characterize students' inclination-to-reflect while attempting chemistry learning tasks and the other parts aim to characterize their learning-thinking preferences in the subject. This article shares the construction of the learning tasks in the first part and how students' reflective responses to these tasks are encouraged, scored and analyzed. Since assessment is said to drive teaching and learning, an alternative form of assessment, such as these CLTI items, may help students become more reflective in their learning habits and hence mare adantable tn the world of work.  相似文献

This paper presents a mixed methods study that explored how storybooks influence kindergarten children's mathematical achievement and approaches to mathematics learning. Teachers' observations and research stating primary grade children's lack of mathematical knowledge and negative attitudes towards mathematics served as the impetus for the study. Three kindergarten teachers taught a mathematics unit using various children's storybooks and the characters in the stories as the context for mathematical problems. The results of the study show an impact on students' mathematical achievement as well as the identification of four themes that emerged on how students' approaches to learning were influenced when storybooks were integrated into the mathematics unit.  相似文献

Mini-saga, a brand-new writing genre, is a short story with exactly 50 words, which can be instructed with process genre approach in Chinese college EFL writing classes. Process genre approach emphasizes both the knowledge of context, especially the purpose for writing and skills in using language. Guided by the approach, students need to consider how to achieve certain social purposes in context with appropriate language and structure while composing mini-sagas. Detailed instruction procedures can be designed to instruct students to work out mini-sagas, which can arouse their interest and motivation in English writing, encourage their writing innovation and originality, develop their writing skills, and dig their writing potentials.  相似文献

This paper aims at outlining the dual-focused approach used to train architecture students to work independently on re-development and re-usage concepts in an Erasmus IP (intensive programme) workshop, where English was used as the working language. The creative tasks were combined with communication skills (social and technical English, negotiation skills), which were to enable the students to present their outcome publicly in the final presentation. The underlying concept is that students work in small international groups and develop their own method to address the given problem in the form of a real project. Through the project-based approach, students search for information that accompanies their project ideas, which helps them find a viable solution. The creative work process is completed by a thorough evaluation and intensive reflection phase in order to strengthen the students' learning experience. Additionally, the interdisciplinary approach, as well as the multinational aspect that originate from different cultural and educational backgrounds of the students, shall contribute to the interactive work process. This process of interaction is based on the idea of experiential learning that sees knowledge as the transformation of experience.  相似文献

The authors investigate how disciplines at school. Interdisciplinarity can be addressing a topic that is too broad to be understanding of the topic, the process going an integrative approach can be applied to teaching of different defined as a process of answering a question, solving a problem or dealt with by a single discipline. In addition to an integrated on inside the learner interests the authors. Unsuspected abilities, development of new views of the world and new commitment may emerge. Constructivism and narration, together with the socio-cultural theory of learning, form the background of the teaching and learning processes. The curriculum will integrate between subjects and recommends work in small groups to develop students' social capacities. The collaborative problem-solving approach, while including telling and re-telling features, allows students of natural sciences to hypothesize and test hypotheses using scientific methods. The target audience of this paper is class teachers and subject teachers in comprehensive schools (Grades 1-9). The research questions are: Do students that undergo integrative education work think and problem-solve in different ways compared to when partaking in standard instruction? Can they develop a deep understanding of the topic they are studying? The authors plan to present story re-telling and visualization activities in groups concerning one theme: eggs. The topic covers arts, foreign languages, mathematics and science. Such an approach strengthens students' understanding of the disciplines themselves. It is hoped that this work can be useful for teachers that are interested in giving their students a more holistic view of their life world.  相似文献

Listening plays a crucial part in the learning of overseas students in the United Kingdom. Students can never follow a lecture or discussion in English without listening. Traditional classroom teaching in listening limits students' time and space. However, the Web-based listening course accommodates listeners a great deal, enabling them to access the Internet at their own pace. In this paper, the author would like to study on a language learning Website for developing learners' listening skills, designed by the CELE (Centre for English Language Education) at the University of Nottingham. In the first part, the author will review the issues concerning listening, conventional materials design, CALL (computer assisted language learning) and actual Websites established for EAP (English academic purposes). Through analysis, the author would develop a set of evaluation criteria in order to evaluate the CELE listening Website. These guidelines should also be helpful for teachers and students to select suitable online listening materials. By using these criteria and comparing with other Websites for similar purposes, the author would highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the CELE Website and offer suggestions for its improvement. In the last section, the author would consider the generalisability of the Website in respect of design principles, exercise types and tools, to check whether it is appropriate for teaching listening in a specific context and whether it is applicable for creating a parallel site developing reading skills.  相似文献

Implementation of information and communication technologies as well as emersion of new user interfaces and web 2.0 technologies changes the way of education system, the way of living and business transactions in general. The way we communicate, operate, produce and live is also changing. In accordance with it, the systems of education change from traditional to modern. The following changes occur: from content delivery to knowledge production, from transfer of knowledge from teachers to students towards encouragement of development and construction of knowledge, from courses and programs changing to the adaptation of the study environment, from the faculty professionalism to the quality of teaching and student learning and the early involvement of students in research work and projects. These occurring changes also affect the students' and professors' mobility. Here, the word "mobility" represents not only the student exchange programs and the easier transitions from one's home university to a foreign one, but also the way professors conduct their classes. With the development of certain software, students' class attendance no longer represents an important factor, as they can now learn from distance using the mentioned software, taking the learning process one step further. In order for above-mentioned changes to occur, the use of e-learning and the development of new tools are almost mandatory. With this in mind, the goal of this paper is to analyze quantitatively the changes that are occurring almost every day that affect the students' learning and the professors' teaching methods.  相似文献

Despite hopes and claims about benefits of computer-assisted language learning, few studies have documented actual cases about how American students learn elementary Chinese in a computer-equipped classroom. This paper deals with how to use computer as an educational tool to' develop American students' Chinese language skills. The theoretical perspective is Interaction Theory; the three types of which, Negotiation of meaning, obtaining modified input and attending to linguistic form, offer the guidance in Computer-assisted learning. By means of observations, this study tries to answer three questions: (1) What is the best way to make use of computers? (2) How can teachers initiate the students to apply computers? (3) What's the relationship between the teacher and the students in a computer-equipped classroom?  相似文献

This article discusses the teaching of life skills to urban American youths who are highly fascinated with the hip-hop culture--songs, raps, miming, lyrics, dressing and musical rhythms, especially individuals with emotional disabilities in the public schools. This is an instructional curriculum strategy to encourage positive and active participation of these students, promote perfect school attendance, encourage good behaviors, deal with anger management and motivate committed learning in the classroom. The instructors' understanding of students' culture, learning needs and styles, and using such background knowledge to educate them become imperative in this setting. These urge for innovative and leadership projects in the author's special education classroom necessitated the application of hip-hop music to teach life skills, reading and other functional skills in the classroom. The outcome was positive and rewarding to both the teachers and students. There are recommendations for interested teachers to devise creative teaching methods, differentiated instruction and appropriate classroom management practices to attain student achievement.  相似文献

At present, the purpose of middle school English teaching is to improve students' skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, the teachers and the students yield to the examinations, which result in many problems in English learning, particularly in English listening. The main causes of it are as follows: ( 1 ) Teachers and students think it's not important to practice listening in junior one and junior two. They prefer tactics for the examination of entering schools of a higher grade. (2)Listening is not taught systematically to students, such as how to choose words, make sentences, organize paragraphs, conceive the whole essay and so on.  相似文献

Motivational methods of teaching are topical subjects and much discussed issues regarding schools and education. The first question of our study covers student motivation and students' perception of their own schools' teaching methods. The second question reflects on how upper secondary school teachers perceive their roles as teachers, their thoughts on acquirement of knowledge and how learning takes place. The third question treats the subject of how school and education is organized. The upper secondary school the authors chose for the case study is a school that recruits students on a national basis and is directed towards the education of fire and rescue service personnel. The programme follows the national science curriculum and gives qualification for further studies at most universities. The school started in the autumn of 1998 and is known for being successful at working with student involvement, responsibility and subject integration. The study which was conducted during the autumn of 2007 included 32 students from two of the learning groups from the same year and started on the day of introduction of a new theme and finished with their presentation of results. The authors made observations, interviewed and through questionnaires studied how students comprehended the schools' working methods. We also interviewed their teachers and headmaster. The theoretic standpoint is Activity Theory (Chaiklin, S. & Lave, J. 1996; Knutagard, H., 2002; Vygotsky, L. S., 1986). The conclusions are that the students are encuitured into a school's activities that are similar to what students perceive as that of real life. It gives meaning and motivation to learning and makes it meaningful. They identify their own responsibility and cooperative learning as the most important parts. The teachers' own learning process and planning work is parallel to the work forms applicable to the students. They are all interdependent of each other since all the work areas are thematic. The school can be seen as an activity system where members interplay and communication develops a common culture.  相似文献

To promote economic and personal growth, higher education students' employability, ensuring their preparedness for the workforce, is emphasized. From the employer's perspective, judging whether a graduate is employable depends upon whether the graduate exhibits the attributes which employers value. Yet, with the growing emphasis on lifelong learning, it is important for higher education to re-consider and reframe the development and assessment of attributes of graduates in the context of lifelong learning. In this paper, these attributes will be explored in that context, and the issue of how assessment helps the development of graduate attributes is to be considered. Student engagement is proposed in this paper as the holistic, useful approach for the development of employability and lifelong learning. The holistic approach reflects the fact that what is required in a workforce is not the acquisition of knowledge, skills and dispositions per se, but the capability to make an engagement through which knowledge, skills and dispositions are connected as a whole. The lack of emphasis on students' engagement could lead to mistakenly selecting as important for the focus of assessment simply the acquisition of skills, knowledge or dispositions, rather than the holistic connection of these to their application in the workforce.  相似文献

Laboratory work educates students about the "processes of science". But it is suggested that students' learning level is low because of limited application of science processes in their laboratory work. Extraction experiment was chosen as the topic since it allows students to apply many of their basic chemistry knowledge, and it can be readily to gain understanding of scientific proceses required for an investigation. This study has been carried out with 40 students who are in the first year of Science Teaching Division at Trakya University, Faculty of Education. These students were divided into two groups of the experimental group and the control group, each group containing 20 students. The students of the experimental group were given knowledge about basic scientific process skills, and a procedure in detail to follow was given. But the students of the control group was given a standard procedure. The students of both groups were asked about what and why they did while they were performing the laboratory investigation. We observed that the experimental group students used the basic process skills, understood the extraction experiment, and realized what and why they did from this activity better than the control group students. The control group students did not know why they did laboratory work and they tended to focus on completing the task rather than learning from it. We considered that the experience would be helpful for students to improve scientific process skills if the students successfully acquired procedural understanding. Students" scientific processskills will develop as long as they use the skills.  相似文献

The author has undergone a major shift in the way of teaching his undergraduate computer programming courses. In the classroom, the teacher's computer is connected to a splitter and a video projector that display the computer's screen to the entire class. Using this technology, the programming language itself is used live in class to help the students learn how to program. The students are learning in a context by far livelier than those of previous methods. Teaching computer programming is not achieved by lecturing and writing the program instructions on board or by displaying program instructions to the class on transparencies or slides of electronic presentations. With the implementation of student-centered approaches, the students migrated from the state of passive receivers to constructors of computer programming concepts. Students are coached to develop a sense of exploration, individuality and autonomous thinking. The enthusiasm for technology has been facilitating and supporting the learner-centered approach. Everyone in this approach is a learner, including the teacher.  相似文献

It is very important to develop student teachers' skills and knowledge during the pre-service teacher education process. In this study, the effectiveness of the approach in which student teachers' gained skills of developing and using TGMs (teacher-guided materials) based on integration of technology on physics education in STMC-Ⅱ (Special Teaching Methods Course-Ⅱ) for pre-service physics teachers was evaluated. The study was conducted with 33 physics student teachers in KTU (Karadeniz Technical University). Student teachers were required to develop and present TGMs, which were based on principles of special teaching approaches and techniques and integration of technology through instruction. The data of the study were gained from semi-structured interviews conducted with 14 student teachers, observations of the lessons conducted by each student teacher and document analysis of the student teachers' diaries collected during the term. The student teachers stated that STMC-11 was a very helpful experience to gain teaching skills. It is believed that all these activities, which are designed and performed in the classroom by student teachers during STMC-Ⅱ course, will not only prepare them for their teaching but also help them gain basic experiences that they will need in their future career. At the end of the process, it is concluded that all the student teachers gained nearly the whole defined aims--skills and knowledge of the STMC-Ⅱ. The implementation process should be organized very well to have advance of gaining many skills together. Key words: physics student teacher; STMC-Ⅱ; the skills of developing TGMs and integration of technology  相似文献

In the process of classroom education, setting questions in class is an important teaching method, which is used in the whole teaching activity and acts as the link between the thoughts of teachers and students. Hence, creating a wisdom class and using according questions to aid the class are of great significance to both students and teachers. In this paper, 40 elementary students from the 9th grade and 10 of their teachers were studied and the result showed that learning requirements facing to the whole class and students' learning beliefs are essential principles, and questions should be set by having an exhaustive understanding of the textbook, giving previous homework, creating a thinking atmosphere, and setting a proper difficulty for the students. The proper time to set questions is when the old knowledge and new knowledge of the student conflict in the awareness of the student, when the teacher wants to spread thought, and when the teacher wants to make a conclusion.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were: (a) to identify the teaching beliefs of an ecology teacher when teaching an ecology course; and (b) to determine the influences of these beliefs on students' learning performance. The present study employed a case study research method to conduct a year-long observation, focusing on the teacher's teaching beliefs, research representations, and the students' attitudes and changes in their ecological knowledge. The present study employed both qualitative and quantitative analyses through classroom observations, teacher and student interview questionnaires, a self-administered course comprehension questionnaire, and an ecology course attitude scale among other tools. Findings indicated that the research teacher maintained teaching beliefs that were improvement-oriented and preferred to use an integrated teaching method that was diversified and provided interdisciplinary knowledge. Through the ecology course, the students were able to rectify their misconceptions, learn to view nature from a macro-perspective, and respect life. The results obtained in the present study can be provided to other teachers as a reference and learning direction when teaching ecology courses.  相似文献
