ABSTRACT

In late 1996, Kent State University Libraries began to research electronic reserves software in order to conduct a pilot project. The software chosen was ERes 2.0, developed at Santa Clara University by Philip Kesten and Slaven Zivkovic. This article describes how and why ERes was chosen and how the system was adapted for use at Kent State University. The integration with the OPAC and full-text databases, as well as the pitfalls encountered during the pilot project is detailed. Also described is the experience of learning to scan print documents efficiently.  相似文献

Abstract

The paper discusses the methodology adopted for and the results derived from a pilot project to conserve the lead and lead alloy communion tokens in the collections of St Andrews University. For the project a new conservation process, ‘potentiostatic reduction’, was developed, involving reduction of the tokens at ?1·2V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode) in 0·5M H2SO4, The aim of the pilot project was to test the effectiveness of the new process in tackling a largescale conservation problem by observing its effects on a wide range of tokens made of various alloys and suffering from varying degrees of corrosion. The results of the pilot project indicated that potentiostatic reduction is as effective as standard electrolytic reduction. Since the new technique greatly reduces the time required for the conservation of individual artifacts, there are substantial savings in conservation costs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A research project was undertaken by a university library system to develop a sustainable user experience strategy. A task force was convened to conduct a pilot project with members from both libraries in the system to assess staffing responsibilities, guidelines, processes, and data-gathering procedures. The team tested an electronic resources list common to both libraries. In describing the methods employed by the task force in their research, this article outlines the benefits and drawbacks of staffing configurations to initiate user experience practices in an academic library setting.  相似文献

Abstract

Distance Learning Library Services at the University of Kentucky provided an electronic reserves service as a pilot project for distance learning courses in the 2000–01 academic year. Distance Learning Programs, which is a part of the Distance Learning Technology Center, funded the project. Policies and procedures were formulated, an account was set up with the Copyright Clearance Center, and the service was marketed. Abstract

The development of a new method of providing instruction involves many different issues. This paper examines a pilot project in which videoconferencing was used to provide library instruction to students at remote campuses. The librarians initiating this new service confronted the issues of training, adaptation of instruction techniques to the new format, and collaboration with faculty and administrative staff. They also dealt with administrative issues such as scheduling classes and facilities and staff scheduling. This paper examines how this cross-departmental project developed and was supported, how the initial training was conducted, and how existing class outlines were adapted. Also discussed are the lessons learned from the initial sessions. Varied administrative and collaborative challenges face the library, faculty, and departmental administrators as this project moves from pilot project status into a regular and required part of the curriculum.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This presents the experience at Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries in developing a pilot project proposal for electronic reserves. The proposal served as the blueprint for planning as well as gaining the support of the library administration and library staff by discussing goals, scope, intellectual property management, budget, and timetable. Summary

The World Wide Web makes it possible for patrons to link easily to electronic journals but does not resolve problems of selection, acquisition, serials control, and cataloging. A pilot project undertaken at the University of Southern California Libraries involved creating a subject and title index to e-journals of interest to the USC faculty on the Web with links to the journals. Upon completion of the pilot, maintenance of the collection was assigned to the Serials Department in the University Library. It then became necessary to mainstream e-journal collection maintenance into the technical services operations of the library.  相似文献

Abstract

Forty U.S. and Canadian medical libraries are electronically transmitting interlibrary loans to the Eastern European Medical Library of Latvia. This resource sharing initiative is an outgrowth of a pilot project of the International Cooperation Section of the Medical Library Association. The interlibrary loans are sent free of charge using the National Library of Medicine's DOCLINE system. This article will discuss the success of this program and how it started.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In June of 2001, the University of California Libraries initiated a pilot project that enabled library patrons to direct request items held in the University of California Special Collection Units. The pilot ended the need for patrons to initiate most requests for unique items in person through the Special Collections department and allowed patrons to self-determine the need for a unique item when searching the shared UC-wide catalog, Melvyl®. The following article discusses the process used to handle the requests, includes perspectives from the two units overseeing the requests, evaluates the overall success of the pilot and offers considerations for implementing a similar service elsewhere.  相似文献

Abstract

In 2001-02, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Library tested and implemented secure Web ordering and delivery of journal articles, using Prospero for interlibrary loan, photocopy service, Circuit Librarian service, and document delivery between library branches. The goal was to deliver photocopied and interlibrary loan journal articles faster than campus mail, U.S. mail, or the courier service. In December 2001, eight staff began delivering articles electronically to one remote site as part of the Library Electronic Article Delivery (LEAD) pilot project. Electronic desktop delivery has since expanded to serve two branch libraries and UTHSCSA, San Antonio, and South Texas healthcare professionals. By reviewing the basis and describing the three phase pilot project, the author hopes to articulate the implementation of a new electronic service in a medical library.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Several library directors in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) hypothesized that charging for interlibrary loan transactions was a false economy. They suggested that if ASERL libraries implemented ILL reciprocity, savings would be realized. From September 1, 1992 through June 30, 1993, thirty-six ASERL libraries participated in a pilot project. OCLC/ILL transaction data for borrowing and lending activity among the libraries was reviewed for two periods, one prior to and the other during the pilot project period. This paper reports on data analysis and a follow-up survey of participants. The results supported the hypothesis that ASERL library directors would accept terms of ILL reciprocity that were based on standard protocols and analysis of quantitative data.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Search engine use is one of the most popular online activities. According to a recent OCLC report, nearly all students start their electronic research using a search engine instead of the library Web site. Instead of viewing search engines as competition, however, librarians at Binghamton University Libraries decided to employ search engine optimization strategies to make their Web site more visible on the search engine result pages. Although search engine optimization is used frequently by commercial Web sites, few libraries have attempted to optimize their own sites. This article describes Binghamton University's experiences in developing and implementing an optimization pilot project. The research presented in this article has importance for libraries who may be considering an optimization project for their own sites.  相似文献

In 2003 the University of Maryland's Engineering and Physical Sciences Library conducted a pilot project selling gift books on the Internet resulting in gross sales totaling $9,326, a net profit of $6,917, for only 96 calculated staff hours. This article describes this project from inception through conclusion summarizing the detailed processes needed to get started and make it profitable, while also giving step-by-step advice on running an online book sale. After 3 years of operation (over $18,000 in sales), the project came to an end when the Library Administration Earned Income Committee recommended retail sales such as this not be part of the libraries' mission.  相似文献

Abstract

Usage is an increasingly important factor in decisions about the funding of library resources. Data for electronic resources and print serials is more likely to be gathered and analyzed than monographic use data. This situation poses a threat to the appropriate funding for monographic acquisitions. A pilot project was designed at the Medical College of Wisconsin Libraries to develop and test a method of producing use reports for monographs purchased in recent years. Despite some unusual challenges, the pilot project proved that retrieval and analysis of data could be performed with readily available software. While the results from the analysis cannot be the sole or main foundation for changes in the collection development of monographs, the use reports provided new insights into the utilization of recent acquisitions and pinpointed weaknesses or strengths of acquisition patterns.  相似文献

This article examines a collaboration between academic librarians and campus IT to provide library training and assessment for computer lab consultants who work in the library. Pre- and post-tests were used to gauge lab consultants’ ability to answer frequently asked library questions using online guides. Ara Irititja is an enduring and multifaceted project that returns and collectively documents Anangu historical material and preserves it for the future. This paper explains why the archival project has been so effective in engaging Indigenous communities and what it is doing to ensure its longevity. In particular, the paper provides details about a new pilot project which has resulted in a software application entitled Ara Winki No. 1, ‘a whole lot of stories’, specifically for use on portable electronic devices, which delivers historical and cultural content of relevance to Anangu in local languages and works to connect the existing archive to younger generations.  相似文献

Objective:The researchers used the flipped classroom model to develop and conduct a systematic review course for librarians.Setting:The research took place at an academic health sciences library.Method:A team of informationists developed and conducted a pilot course. Assessment informed changes to both course components; a second course addressed gaps in the pilot.Conclusion:The flipped classroom model can be successful in developing and implementing a course that is well rated by students.  相似文献
