As increasing numbers of older adults stay in the workforce or engage in encore careers, they are subjected to diverse issues and challenges. The new dynamics of the workplace in a global market exert pressure on older workers and employers alike in which training and development has a potentially significant function for achieving greater productivity and job satisfaction. This article discusses the changing workplace and the diverse range of learning opportunities that may be available to older workers. The article then addresses selected issues of overcoming stereotypical assumptions about the capabilities of older workers, age stratification at work, and the differing perspectives of managers and employees to learning opportunities. The article argues for a negotiated process of learning where significant autonomy is assumed by workers. 相似文献

Advances in neuroscience are providing information about the brain and its development. Some researchers propose that childcare
workers need to understand this information because it confirms their importance and their use of developmentally appropriate
practice (DAP). Given the fact that childcare workers could benefit from this insight, it seems reasonable to ask where they
get their information about the brain and what they know about the brain and DAP. The purpose of this exploratory study was
to investigate these questions by surveying a group of 59 childcare workers from three different centers. Results indicate
these childcare workers prefer to get their information from workshops. They knew most about interactions and things that
can harm the developing brain. They knew significantly less about brain development. Implications from these findings point
to the importance of offering workshops with sound scientific information. 相似文献

Worker’s Faculties, which have been widespread in the Soviet Union up until 1941, combined the two goals of preparing adult workers and peasants for university entrance through the provision of general education, as well as creating a new socialist intelligentsia from among these groups. After World War II, Workers’ Faculties were also established in postcolonial countries. Based on case studies in Vietnam, Cuba, and Mozambique, we argue that corresponding transfer processes were largely driven by local actors in the respective countries and that these institutions were regarded as suitable instruments in solving problems particular to postcolonial contexts. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to better understand the relationship between employees’ chronological age and their motivation to learn, by adopting a lifespan perspective. Based on socioemotional selectivity theory, we suggest that occupational future time perspective mediates the relationship between age and motivation to learn. In accordance with expectancy-value and self-efficacy theories, motivation to learn was operationalized as employees’ learning motivational beliefs (i.e., learning self-efficacy and learning value). To test our model, survey data were obtained from 560 workers between the ages of 21 to 64 years. Results demonstrated the importance of taking workers’ occupational future time perspective into account to explain relationships between age and learning motivational beliefs. 相似文献

This paper explores the concept of apprenticeship in the context of the professional formation of knowledge workers. It draws
on evidence from research conducted in two knowledge intensive organizations: a research-intensive, elite university; and
a ‘cutting edge’ software engineering company. In the former, we investigated the learning environments of contract researchers,
whilst in the latter, we focused on the learning environments of software engineers. Both organisations have ‘global’ reach
in that they operate within international marketplaces and see themselves as international players. The paper asks to what
extent the important role of maturation with regard to the formation of expertise is being undermined by the pressurised nature
of contemporary workplaces (in both the public and private sectors). It argues that conceiving the professional formation
of knowledge workers as apprenticeship provides a way forward to improve the way employers construct and support that formation. 相似文献

AbstractThis article explores how social movement co-governance of public education offers an alternative to neoliberal educational models. The Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST) is one of the largest social movements in Latin America. We describe one of the many schools that the MST co-governs, the Itinerant School Paths of Knowledge (Caminhos do Saber), located in an occupied encampment in the state of Paraná. We analyze three of the most unique pedagogical innovations in the school: the teacher’s incorporation of ‘portions of reality’ into classroom teaching, the student work collectives, and the participatory student evaluation process. Although these pedagogies are seemingly mundane changes to everyday school practice, we argue that they represent a challenge to the neoliberal educational model being implemented globally. These movement pedagogies are likely to continue, despite recent conservative attacks, and they offer several concrete lessons for how to effectively contest neoliberal educational practices in other global contexts. 相似文献

This investigation examines the place of initial and further education in continuing education and training over the life-course of workers across Europe. The evidence presented demonstrates that in countries with a strong orientation towards vocational education, participation in continuing education and training among employees is higher than in countries that mainly provide general education. Moreover, it can be seen that the effect of the vocational orientation of the education system increases over the life-course of workers. The conclusion of this investigation is that further education complements rather than substitutes for initial education. This implies that national education and training policies meant to encourage lifelong learning should not only attempt to expand or redirect training received by already experienced workers, but also try to facilitate participation in initial vocational training. 相似文献

AbstractWhen historians discuss the impact of examinations on elementary education in mid-Victorian England and Wales they typically focus on the Revised Code of 1862. The Revised Code is famous for instituting a policy of “payment-by-results” for teachers in state-supported voluntary schools. “Payment-by-results” made government grants to schools – and, by extension, for teachers’ salaries – contingent upon student attendance and pass rates in reading, writing and arithmetic. As this article emphasises, however, “payment-by-results” was not the first, or even the most significant, instance in which competitive examination was used by the state as an instrument for establishing the pedagogical fitness and salaries of teachers. Less often explored by historians is the formative role that state-mandated competitive examinations for teachers played in developing a professionally aspirant body of schoolteachers and, consequently, the schoolteachers’ later role in developing competitive examination as a broad-scale national accreditation apparatus. But while the use of competitive examinations came to shape modern British academic and professional life in fundamental ways, the strengthening effects that they had for certain occupations and institutions, such as physicians, civil servants and middle-class secondary schools, were in fact ultimately denied to state teachers and the elementary education sector generally. With the introduction of “payment-by-results” in 1862, competitive examinations were converted into an instrument that weakened rather than strengthened teachers’ professional identity and policy influence. This article explains how the nineteenth-century English state structured examinations and examination results to manipulate the professional status of teachers in order to suit state priorities during different stages of national development. This historical narrative is framed in reference to present-day examination-based reforms of teacher compensation systems such as performance-related-pay and value-added modelling. 相似文献

Studies that examine the effects of exercise on children’s intelligence, cognition, or academic achievement were reviewed
and results were discussed in light of (a) contemporary cognitive theory development directed toward exercise, (b) recent
research demonstrating the salutary effects of exercise on adults’ cognitive functioning, and (c) studies conducted with animals
that have linked physical activity to changes in neurological development and behavior. Similar to adults, exercise facilitates
children’s executive function (i.e., processes required to select, organize, and properly initiate goal-directed actions).
Exercise may prove to be a simple, yet important, method of enhancing those aspects of children’s mental functioning central
to cognitive development.

The article reviews the strikingly divergent viewpoints of intellectuals—scientists and non-scientists—about Science and Technology. It shows that while scientists implicitly accept the difference between Science and Technology, to non-scientists that difference is irrelevant. The most important differences between Science and Technology that lie in their relative scales, outputs and accuracy of predictions are highlighted. The complexity of and difficulty in trying to quantify the contribution of science and technology to economic growth are discussed.
