I watched her draw while the dust from the country road billowed around the passenger seat window. She held the red felt-tipped pen in her slight hand like it was an extension of her self. Small squares of yellow memo pad paper were scattered in her lap. It was all I could scrounge up in hopes of keeping a four-year-old sufficiently occupied for the drive to her grandmother's house. Red suns, smiling faces and sunflowers bobbed gently with the moving car. Her face was somber and serious. I c…  相似文献

When I was nine years old there was nothing Iloved more than being chased by grownups.Nothing equaled the excitement ofit.During the long summer holidays fromschool I went out the front door of our semi-detachedtwo storey house, hoping to see some of my mates onthe road outside:What did I see only our next doorneighbour Mr Hickey high up on his ladder paintingthe frame of his bedroom window. Here,I thought, was a good chance of a chase because Mr Higgins’shot temper was known everywhere in the neigh—bourhood.Over the garden wall I climbed and stood  相似文献

Motorbike and I
My friends and I always find an excuse to ride a motorbike. I personally think it is one of the funniest things to do in Guilin. The first time I did it I had to admit I was a little bit nervous. I had never been on a motorbike before and I always thought there was a big possibility of failing off the bike, for the road was too bumpy.  相似文献

I once stayed at St Paul's Grammar School in Sydney, Australia, as a visiting teacher for two months. From the moment I got there till the time I left, I seldom felt lonely and homesick. I know that's because Australian people are friendly to us and willing to help us. My friend Patsy Beckett is one of them.Patsy, (Mrs. Beckett) is the Principal's Personal Assistant at the school. Though she is busy all the time, she has arranged my visit in great detail. The first day I came to school she took me to my homestay's house herself, and there I found some beautiful flowers and nice fruit on the desk in my room. I thought this was a nice gesture of friendship.  相似文献

Invisible Racial Disparities 隐形的种族差异 One aftemoon when I was going out to do some errands (差事),I sew three young men, about 15 to 17 years of age, standing in front of a house in my neighborhood, chatting and laughing.I took a notice of them because they looked different and kind of out of place:They were not white.I continued on to run my errands without thinking too much of it.When I came back about an hour later, there was a police car parked in front of the house where these young folks were. After I drove around the comer,I saw a second police car,and one of the three youths was in the back seat of the car, handcuffed (带着手铐),with two officers questioning him.A thought shot across my mind:Are these young people members of a local youth gang,or are they just in a wrong neighborhood?  相似文献

一、完形填空I’ll never forget the Christmas when I played Santa’s helper. Our son Alvin, who was six years old,1 a new sound system. "Please bring me a new stereo(立体声) so I don’t have to listen to my dad’s old 2," he told the mall Santa.Laura and I took note. On Christmas Eve,we placed Santa’s cookies and milk 3 the fire, tossed a few carrots on the roof for the reindeer, and 4 Alvin to sleep in our bed at the back of the house,5 the sound of Santa’s boots wouldn’t wake him.I had 6 a small workshop in the spare bedroom and spent the whole night putting together that stereo. 7,I took a break to move Alvin from our bed to his-he was afraid that Santa might think he wasn’t home and would forget  相似文献

I was driving down the 1)reeway one afternoon, sometime in 1977. I was listening to the radio when the song Magdalena by Danny O'Keefe, sung by Leo Sayer, came on.I liked it immediately. My favorite line was "Your love is like a 2)razor.My heart is just a scar." As I continued to drive down the road the thought came,I don't agree with the 3)sentiment.I was younger then.I didn't think love is like a razor. What, then, did I think love is? Suddenly,it was as if someone had opened a window in the top of my head.Words came pouring in.I had to keep 4)reciting them to myself as I drove faster and faster towards home,so I wouldn't forget them.I 5)screeched into my drive way,ran into the house, and sat down at the piano.Ten minutes later,The Rose was there.  相似文献

命运之变
When I got to where I am living now,I thought that I was going to just get a job and make ends meet.I didn't think that a person like me could get yet another chance of doing things right. But thankfully,I was wrong.I was able to make a family right off the bat.My blood turned their backs on me after I got married. The only person I keep in contact with is my mother. She lives in Ohio and shows little to no interest in seeing me.That's the way it's always been for me... no roots,no real solid ties. But the boy who saved me took me home. And they now call me their own. They have helped me in so many ways,I don't think I will ever be able to pay them back.  相似文献

Peristeri means a clove in Greek. It's also the name of the area I was staying while I was visiting my grandmother's family in Athens, Greece. Surrounded by a myriad of unfamiliar faces, jetlagged and exhausted, I tried to make sense of all the buzzing conversations going on around me. Sitting on the veranda of my grandmother's sister's home in Peristeri, I studied the faces of my relatives; I barely knew any of them at the time, and the newness of my surroundings captivated me, regardless of my knee-trembling sleepiness.……  相似文献

I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me said some- thing in a low voice, but I didn"t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if  相似文献

I still remember the words “I love Beijing, I love Beijing Tian'anmen”-which I read in the Chinese textbook when I was young. Beijing has been mysterious for me all the time. I was eager to visit her. My parents took me on a tour to Beijing during the summer holiday, 2005. It is well- known that Beijing is the capital city of the People's Republic of China and also the second largest city in China after Shanghai. It was a great journey. Now let me tell you my experience to Beijing; let us share the happiness of travelling.  相似文献

My Childhood
My childhood has gone and will never come back.Yet I still cannot forget those happy days of my childhood. I was brought up by my grandmother. She loved me very much.Every night,I sat by her after supper and listened to her fascinating stories. How I liked those tales! They always brought me to a different world. When I fell sick and had to be in bed,my grandmother took good care of me and made all kinds of delicious food for me.We also kept a little cat.He loved to run in the yard and play with a ball.I was glad that I had a friend to play with every day.  相似文献
