ABSTRACT

ARL interlibrary loan statistics and most other interlibrary loan cost studies provide only the mean and median unit cost. The author suggests that future statistical survey include marginal cost in addition to unit cost. Another important factor that is not included in the current interlibrary loan cost studies is the copyright fee, or royalty fee. When the sixth article from a journal is requested for copying by a library in the same year, a copyright fee is incurred, and it can be more than $50 per article. However, the copyright fee is not listed as a separate category in any of the current interlibrary loan cost studies. Since the copyright fee is an additional cost to the borrowing library, it is a marginal cost, not a fixed cost (such as staff salaries). Zhou's formula to include the copyright fee into the marginal cost study is presented, and the marginal analysis and the copyright fee are incorporated into the interlibrary loan cost study for the first time.  相似文献

Abstract

Virginia Commonwealth University has interlibrary loan staff members who work in a variety of locations. A review of library and business management literature and an informal survey of interlibrary loan managers was conducted to assess the extent and practices for managing interlibrary loan and document delivery staff members who work in separate locations. Data was collected to highlight common problems and challenges faced by managers who deal with this situation, and to consider the best practices used by the managers. The practices of interlibrary loan managers were very similar to those of managers found in management literature, indicating that library managers, particularly in interlibrary loan, can benefit from reading business management sources regularly.  相似文献

Abstract

Technology is rapidly moving libraries toward a self-service interlibrary loan model. Patrons currently request books and articles through OCLC's unmediated ILL Direct Request service, and interlibrary loan management software enables users to request, track, and renew borrowed materials unassisted online. In addition, products such as SFX and Serials Solutions further expand unmediated requesting. Peer-to-peer resource sharing defined by the ISO ILL Protocol and direct consortial borrowing, which has become possible following the recently approved NCIP standard, encourage and support the widespread development of self-service interlibrary loan. As borrowing from other collections becomes an almost effortless process for library users, reference librarians must find ways to encourage patron use of local collections, as well as familiarize themselves with the mechanics of unmediated interlibrary loan to better assist patrons in their use of evolving interlibrary loan technology.  相似文献

Union listing of serials on OCLC can bring about an increase in interlibrary loan and turn-around time when implemented at a university library. Formerly accessible as a subsystem of OCLC, union listing is now available on Connexion Browser as MARC 21 holdings data. Immediately following a batch load of OCLC union listing records at medium-sized Louisiana university library, it was found that lending requests sent to the library were up 10% for all materials and up 13% for serials. An increase in borrower requests from patrons at the library was also observed when interlibrary loan request buttons were inserted into citation entries found on EBSCO host university databases.  相似文献

While the ideal of a paperless library may be unobtainable, striving for a paperless interlibrary loan department is both possible and desirable. Interlibrary loan departments at smaller academic libraries are often understaffed and overworked. In this environment, streamlining and efficiency become priorities; implementing practical changes that save time, effort, and money are critical. Changes may include going paperless, improving shipping techniques, using custom holdings wisely, and training staff for efficiency.  相似文献

Abstract

The challenge to the Benedictine University Library In-terlibrary Loan Department, and too many other small academic interli-brary loan departments, is to provide items to patrons in a timely fashion with little or no budget. Techniques to facilitate interlibrary loan in small libraries are described and discussed. Efficient workflow, consortia and statewide library partnerships, reciprocal sharing agreements and leveraging existing tools in creative ways to save labor and time are also described.  相似文献

Abstract

Relais International Inc. would like to take this opportunity to introduce our latest product, Relais ILL. Instructional technology stands out amongst the array of products we have to offer as this product has been designed with the smaller library and interlibrary loan department in mind. Relais interlibrary loan combines the sophistication and automation of Relais Enterprise with ease of installation and implementation. Relais interlibrary loan is ideal for a wide range of libraries that are looking to streamline and automate their interlibrary loan operations.

For a cost-effective and integrated solution to your request management needs, use Relais ILL.

Use Relais ILL: to automatically search a range of catalogs via Z39.50 and use the results to automatically build a routing list; requests are sent out automatically, as ISO interlibrary loan transactions to libraries in the order you specify; stay in touch with patrons using predefined messages or create your own message on the fly.

The task of delivering documents between sites has always been a staff intensive undertaking for libraries due to physical distance, searching for locations for the requested document, availability of the requested document, as well as many other potential obstacles. Relais International Inc. is striving to overcome these barriers by offering swift and efficient Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan. Relais ILL's features include high levels of automation, tracking of requests, patron communication, and a plethora of possibilities to help simplify the interlibrary loan process.  相似文献

Many interlibrary loan supervisors request additional staff to handle increased demands for interlibrary loan (ILL). To make decisions, library administrators need information about productivity and staffing. This paper outlines a way to find this information. It also includes results from a study of ILL workload and staffing in the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries (NAAL). Other libraries may use these to evaluate their own efficiency, effectiveness, and staffing levels.  相似文献

This study presents an examination of the annotations, comments and notes written by Interlibrary Loan Borrowing (ILLB) staff and interlibrary loan patrons. Interlibrary loan requests were submitted on index cards, and later using the electronic interlibrary loan system (ILLiad). The research attempts to determine how the interlibrary loan process was transformed from the analog-to-electronic progression. Analysis of the notes, annotations and comments on 2,000 interlibrary loan cards and 1,975 ILLiad transaction records suggests that consolidation and synthesis of different components in the interlibrary loan process has resulted in increased efficiency. Patrons using the electronic service are more motivated to communicate with ILLB Staff via the “Notes” field embedded in the interlibrary loan request submission form.  相似文献

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is an important service point in the academic library, a channel through which patrons can ask for specific books and expect that those books will be made available to them. Examining the methods in which libraries handle those requests may reveal new workflows wherein ILL can influence the direction of the library's permanent acquisitions. ILL data is able to drive immediate purchases of user-requested titles but also more complex models of acquisition. By comparing circulation rates and expenditures against traditional book-approval plans, acquisitions departments may also measure the financial effectiveness of purchase-on-demand programs and use them to both supplement and supplant those approval plans. At the core of Lehigh University's efforts is an internal library philosophy called “Flipped Interlibrary Loan” (F.I.L.L.), by which ILL can and should inform permanent acquisitions for the library collection.  相似文献

Abstract

Interlibrary loan (ILL) services receive requests for resources that are available locally and form a major portion of canceled requests. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between requests canceled due to local availability and three aspects to identify impacts on ILL. The authors explored library service aspects such as collection format, the link resolver knowledge base, and discovery system functionality for potential influence on requests for locally available resources. Quantitative methods were used to identify evidence of different aspects’ impact through analysis of ILL borrowing request data. The most important finding was that the discovery system had impact on ILL services by improving retrievability of locally available resources published recently. The results suggest that a modern discovery system can efficiently provide more relevant results sourced from a carefully curated set of authoritative resources, save users’ time to access available materials, and reduce library staff members’ time and effort. This study will be helpful to libraries through its analysis of library services that impact the cancelation of ILL requests due to local availability and how those services may influence service improvement.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Several library directors in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) hypothesized that charging for interlibrary loan transactions was a false economy. They suggested that if ASERL libraries implemented ILL reciprocity, savings would be realized. From September 1, 1992 through June 30, 1993, thirty-six ASERL libraries participated in a pilot project. OCLC/ILL transaction data for borrowing and lending activity among the libraries was reviewed for two periods, one prior to and the other during the pilot project period. This paper reports on data analysis and a follow-up survey of participants. The results supported the hypothesis that ASERL library directors would accept terms of ILL reciprocity that were based on standard protocols and analysis of quantitative data.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Ariel files are the starting point for electronic delivery of interlibrary loan articles through ILLiad, Virginia Tech's interlibrary loan system. Despite some advantages to electronic delivery of articles to their desktops, a large majority of ILL customers continue to prefer print on paper delivery rather than electronic delivery. This fact has implications for introducing additional electronic services. Correctly choosing what services to impose on library customers, and what services to offer as value-added options, is fundamental to maintaining the credibility of libraries during these times of rapid change.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to outline the “best common practices” at Regent University Library, and share survey data illustrating their effectiveness. Also discussed is how transitioning from an entirely graduate university to a university serving both graduates and undergraduates has influenced library services. The new constituency will increase interlibrary loan transactions and test the library's practices. Providing quality interlibrary loan service to a growing academic population requires innovative ideas and practices while keeping the workflow streamlined. New programs implemented over the past several years include books on demand and providing more electronic books and journals. A growing distance education student population has led to paying for library cards for academic libraries located near students' homes and permitting them to return materials to satellite campuses.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

ILLiad is an interlibrary loan borrowing system designed and implemented in the University Libraries at Virginia Tech. ILLiad models the ILL borrowing process so as to track the status of an ILL request as it is processed, either by the staff or by software. This process approach to automating interlibrary loan is leading to fundamental improvements in ILL management and service. The process approach allows continued expansion and modification of the system, including the addition of electronic delivery of articles. The process approach results in substantial improvements in customer service by allowing customers to intervene directly in the borrowing process without staff assistance.  相似文献

As library employees retire or move on to other positions, library managers can take advantage of these opportunities to assess how well the vacant job's duties mesh with current organizational goals and needs. Positions in interlibrary loan and document delivery services (ILL/DDS) are no different. They should be evaluated and reviewed each time a vacancy needs to be filled to ensure that the expectations of the position are in line with the goals of the ILL/DDS department and the library.  相似文献
