Introduction     
This introduction highlights the speakers and their topics presented at the Libraries eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit (formerly known as the MidSouth eResource Symposium) held at Mississippi State University (MSU) Libraries on August 3, 2012. The Summit was co-sponsored by EBSCO Information Services, North American Serials Interest Group's Continuing Education Committee, and MSU Libraries. Electronic resources continue to consume library budgets while remaining critical for today's researchers and students. Libraries must demonstrate their value and continually remind their stakeholders of the importance of these electronic resources and just how vital access to this digital information is. This year's Summit presentations focused on the acquisition, access, and management of eResources, and provided attendees with knowledge of new and emerging technologies related to electronic resources and the digital environment.  相似文献

During the spring of 2010, the University of Houston Libraries Digital Services Department began an initiative to promote existing and upcoming collections in the University of Houston Digital Library and drive traffic to the online repository. Spurred by an OCLC report (De Rosa et al. 2005) that only two percent of college and university students began research by consulting library resources, University of Houston Digital Services staff sought to add content from the University of Houston Digital Library to Wikipedia in order to insert primary source digital materials into the research workflow of students and faculty. As a result, referrals from Wikipedia to the University of Houston Digital Library have increased significantly and the pilot project is now the basis for an ongoing University of Houston Digital Services program. The structure and direction of the pilot project were a collaborative effort between University of Houston Digital Services staff and a University of North Texas Library and Information Science intern participating in the University of Houston Digital Services Digital Library Internship Program. Through this case study the authors cover the evolution of the University of Houston Digital Services Wikipedia pilot project and its growth into a permanent program. The authors also outline the workflows and procedures of the project and describes in detail the challenges and successes of the pilot Wikipedia project at University of Houston Digital Services. Included are lessons learned for libraries and cultural institutions interested in establishing a similar program.  相似文献

Abstract

In January 2016, the University of Toledo Libraries implemented EBSCO Discovery Services (EDS) as its discovery layer. Administrators questioned whether users were able to find consortial material in the EDS, so they assembled a task force to conduct a pilot usability test. The task force gathered demographic data and recorded the screens of 25 students answering six task questions. Results showed participants could easily find most items except books, and for tasks that were open-ended, many students continued searching even though they found relevant material. To determine why participants could not find books, the task force consulted with EBSCO and discovered a configuration problem that was easily resolved by editing a mapping table and adding a custom limiter for print books. The searching issue was more difficult to determine, and the task force suggests a lack of library instruction may be at least partly to blame. Libraries invest significant resources in discovery layers. If users have difficulty using them or finding relevant material for their assignments, libraries need to address that issue and instruction is one solution. This pilot study reports on what the University Libraries did to make the EDS more usable for its users.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article describes the development and implementation of e-science and research support services in the Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) at the University of Minnesota (UMN). A review of the broader e-science initiatives within the UMN demonstrates the needs and opportunities that the University Libraries face while building knowledge, skills, and capacity to support e-research. These experiences are being used by the University Libraries administration and HSL to apply support for the growing needs of researchers in the health sciences. Several research areas that would benefit from enhanced e-science support are described. Plans to address the growing e-research needs of health sciences researchers are also discussed.  相似文献

In 1989, B. Anne Commerton, Director of Libraries at the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Oswego, initiated an intriguing, new concept in librarianship: "Specialized Instructional Services," in recognition of specific populations requiring services tailored to their information needs. Her decision was built upon the work of the Oswego campus community which was intent on examining, through the work of separate committees: college services to non-traditional/adult learner students, students of color, and students with disabilities. Diversity has subsequently been defied in Penfield Library more broadly than it was initially conceived by these committees. This article describes Specialized Instructional Services, a unique cultural diversity library initiative, including its background and history, evolution, current directions, examples of successful initiatives, and future possibilities.  相似文献

The survey aims were to determine research priorities in the Health Library and Information Services sector in the United Kingdom as to their perceived value for the professional and impact on user needs and to identify areas suitable for collaborative research. A 34-member panel consisting of the Chairs of professional groups, journal editors, educationalists, key organizations and representatives from the Health Libraries Group, Libraries for Nursing and University Health Science Libraries professional groups, participated in a three-round postal questionnaire survey using the Delphi Technique. Consensus was achieved for a final set of 20 research priorities. The priorities and their category groups are discussed in the context of (i) the current R&D scene, and (ii) the health information environment. Janetta Waterhouse presented “Managing eResource Processes and Projects” at the eResources & Emerging Technologies Summit held at Mississippi State University Libraries on August 2, 2013. At the time of the presentation, she was the Director of Library Systems and Technical Services at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS). Waterhouse discussed updates to eResource processes at UIS, during the time that eResource management was fully integrated into the Technical Services unit, and the projects needed to get those processes and their data and related systems to the desired state.  相似文献

As free and low-cost Web analytics tools become more sophisticated, libraries’ approach to user analysis can become more nuanced and precise. Tracking appropriate metrics with a well-formulated analytics program can inform design decisions, demonstrate the degree to which those decisions have succeeded, and thereby inform the next iteration in the design process. The Health Sciences Libraries of the University of Minnesota have been using Google Analytics as their primary analytics solution since 2005, and as Google has continued to add functionality and flexibility to the platform, the Health Sciences Libraries has capitalized on the opportunities made available. In this article the author outlines the Health Sciences Libraries strategy for using Google Analytics and describes several of the more novel methods they have developed, providing a roadmap for others seeking to strengthen their understanding of the behavior of users on their library's Web sites.  相似文献

Abstract

The University of Florida (UF), Smathers Libraries has a centralized electronic reserve service, supported by Docutek's ERes software, to serve the needs of onsite and distance education courses. At the same time, the Health Science Center is experiencing explosive growth in distance education courses, particularly in pharmacy, nursing, occupational therapy, audiology, and forensic toxicology. Because the UF Health Science Center Libraries (HSCL) did not have an electronic reserve system and the library automation system did not offer a satisfactory option, the HSCL implemented ERes for their patrons in the six colleges they serve: Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and Health Professions (Rehabilitation Counseling, Physical Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Communicative Disorders, Health Services Administration, and Occupational Therapy). This joint venture has given both the HSCL staff and Smathers staff the opportunity to collaborate, yielding many benefits for the Libraries, faculty, and students. The ultimate goal is for the Libraries to share the same policies and procedures and to have a seamless transaction for the faculty and students who utilize them. This article will not only address the issues that led to the implementation of ERes and “how we did it,” but will also discuss the positive changes of such a project.  相似文献

Every college or university has resources on career development available somewhere, and frequently in more than one place. Too often, however, students do not know where those resources are located. Even more often, once they have found the resources, students do not know how to use them effectively in either career planning or the job search. The Career Center Library (CCL) at Indiana State University has proved to be an innovative solution to this problem. Located in the Career Center, one block from the University's main library, the CCL is considered to be a satellite of the ISU Libraries system. The Career Center librarian is a member of the library faculty who has been funded by and assigned to the Student Services Division of the University to provide both reference and collection development services for the Division. Support is available through ISU Libraries and therefore, access to information resources is enhanced. CCL resources are easily accessible through ISU Libraries' online catalog. This chapter will discuss the development of the Career Center Library at ISU and will illustrate special developments which arose during the process of its organization.  相似文献

Helping Hands

Summary

Research in an unfamiliar library can be intimidating for international students, particularly while they are struggling to overcome language barriers. The Helping Hands Project translated a two-page handout into fourteen different languages to acquaint non-native English speakers with library services in a language they understand. It was a collaborative project between the Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries and the International Cultural Services Program (ICSP). The expected outcome of this project was to lessen language barriers for international students during their initial library visits, and hopefully, to help retain them in the institution. The average enrollment of foreign students at OSU per term, from Fall 2001 to Spring 2002, was 1,162. Usage counts showed that the translated library guides were estimated to serve a population of 819 students from all 14 countries, which was 70% of the total foreign student enrollment at OSU. The total handout distribution count was 306, which was 37% of the targeted population.  相似文献

A library's Web site is well recognized as the gateway to the library for the vast majority of users. Choosing the most user-friendly Web architecture to reflect the many services libraries offer is a complex process, and librarians are still experimenting to find what works best for their users. As part of a redesign of the Oregon State University Libraries’ Web site, entry points for specific user groups were created. One of these user groups was graduate students. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways other academic libraries design their Web sites for particular user groups, specifically graduate students, in order to determine how the Oregon State University Libraries Web site compared to peer institutions. This study analyzed 112 Association of Research Libraries’ Web sites and 26 Oregon academic libraries’ Web sites to determine the availability of resources and services specifically promoted to graduate students. Since graduate students may view the library Web site through the lens of new student, researcher, or instructor, Web sites were also examined to see if sites were created with any or all of these roles in mind. Nearly a quarter of Association of Research Libraries' Web sites that were examined contained a link on the homepage for graduate students, and another 20 percent provided graduate-student information at a lower level in their site hierarchy. A majority of sites had events, subject guides, or course guides for graduate students. Information for graduate students was typically framed in the context of graduate students as researchers. Ideas and examples are given for ways to improve Web site design to better serve this user group. In order to provide improved services to these students, future studies will explore what graduate students need from academic libraries and the ways these students conduct themselves in their various roles of researchers, instructors, and new students.  相似文献

Summary

The Colorado State University Libraries' instructional outreach services have undergone significant changes since the reorganization of Reference Services in January of 1998. The new organizational structure created a separate group for instruction, outreach and staff training, which includes the extended university programs position (distance learning), and a new position, the undergraduate instruction librarian. This new group gives the Libraries an avenue in which to provide focused instruction to the Colorado State University community and limited outreach to campus affiliates and the Fort Collins community. This article discusses outreach activities before and after the reorganization including services to specific populations such as African Americans, Hispanics, distance learning populations and extension services, undergraduates, and disabled students.  相似文献

Indian Agricultural Libraries are exploring new ways and collaborations to fullfil the information need of their patrons through resource sharing and delivering documents using online platform accessible 24X7. The article discusses Inter Lendig and Document Delivery Services (DDR) facilitated through a collaborative consortium Journal Gateway called CeRA under Indian National Agricultural Research System. CeRA the (Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture) provides a platform for online acess to e-journals and inter lending. DDR Services has been established to share resources subscribed by individual libraries as well as consortium journals using the web portal. The article also discusses of the use of DDR services by patrons of the first Indian Agricultural University in the country. Reports that the student community were most active in using the platform for inter library loan and document request in comparison to the faculty researchers who were less dependent on document from other libraries.  相似文献

The most essential components of the former Northlands Regional Medical Program Library Services are reviewed. Their impact is assessed through interpretation of responses to a questionnaire sent to rural institutions that had borrowed one of the NRMP demonstration core libraries. Although the NRMP had thoroughly promoted the need for these institutions to provide information services beyond their own collection, many of them were not ready to support an alternative means of educating library personnel, and had not made use of the extension services provided through either the University of Minnesota Biomedical Library or the Mayo Medical Library. A gradual change was anticipated, however, and some general recommendations are made as an outcome of this study regarding the direction of further efforts towards medical library development in the non-metropolitan areas of Minnesota.  相似文献
