Editorial
The first meeting of the Religious Education Association took place in Chicago in 1903, largely under the inspiration of University of Chicago president William Raney Harper. John Dewey and George Albert Coe were other prominent participants in those early days. The Religious Education journal emerged in 1906, primarily publishing papers presented at REA conferences. To mark this centennial year in the life of the REA and the field it has helped to define, the fall 2003 issue of the journal will be entirely comprised of papers reflecting on the past 100 years of the REA and the field of religious education, and challenges and possibilities for the future.  相似文献

Abstract

The Religious Education Association (REA) selected as its theme for its 1969 National Convention, “Our Divided Society—A Challenge to Religious Education,” addressing, among other topics, issues of race and racism. Previously, the REA presented a mixed legacy in addressing racial injustice, remaining largely silent on such issues during the civil rights era of the 1950s and 1960s, unlike the National Council of Churches, which had taken a prophetic stance early on. Thus, the 1969 convention’s theme opened up brave new spaces for the REA to address issues of race and racism in American society.  相似文献

Abstract

The 2018 Religious Education Association (REA) meeting, Beyond White Normativity: Creating Brave Spaces shed light for many on the failure of the REA to effectively confront the reality of white racial bias within its systemic and structural practices. This essay reflects on four specific ways these challenges emerged during the 2018 session and highlights strategies for how the association might continue the effort to address explicit and implicit racism in its midst.  相似文献

Religious education has changed considerably over the 100 years of the Religious Education Association (REA); urgency has increased for human communities to honor diversity. The focus of this article is realities, visions, and promises of cultural diversity. The article includes an overview of REA's recent history, exemplifying its efforts and limitations in diversity. It then turns to five commentaries on a multicultural future, drawing on autobiographical analysis, religious and educational literature, and empirical study. Authors explicate and argue for: engaging in post-colonial analysis, de-centering assumptions, searching for a story to claim, taking time, and entering deep waters.  相似文献

Abstract One hundred years ago an assembly of four hundred met at Chicago's Auditorium Hotel to create the Religious Education Association. This article traces the influences of William Rainey Harper, John Dewey, and George Albert Coe in the REA's formation, and explores social and intellectual conditions shaping this movement in its beginnings. The author highlights contributions of George Albert Coe as the leading theorist in the religious education movement from the beginnings of the REA into the middle of the 20th century.  相似文献

This article describes the involvement of Roman Catholics in the Religious Education Association during the first 50 years of its existence. It examines attitudes of Protestants toward Catholics expressed in journal articles, convention speeches, and archival material. It presents the contributions of Roman Catholics at conventions and in journal articles during this period. The article contends that Roman Catholics deepened involvement in the REA went a long way to making the association a multifaith organization. The history also documents changes in Roman Catholic viewpoints and emphases over the period of these 50 years from an exclusive concern with schooling to a broader view of the educational mission of the church and from education in an authoritarian and dogmatic spirit to one slightly more open to outside influences and cautiously willing to cooperate with other religious groups.  相似文献

The Centennial Anniversary of the Religious Education Association is a historic event that situates us at the crossroads between a past and a future. At this juncture, we are rightly called to recount the unfolding story of a movement begun in 1903 which first drew focused attention to the inextricable connection between education and religion. This history matters! And, the process of historical reflection on it is an essential one. Most especially, our reflection on the story of the REA- on the organization's story- is important because it can make possible the formation of a picture of the life course of the organization. For some this is occasion for recalling and re-experiencing our ardent participation in and contributions to the organization. For others this may provide a new or renewed awareness of a neglected past. As we read this volume, we are invited to discover what is revealed to us about the REA.  相似文献

In order that the thoughts and the fellowship of the 1950 Biennial Convention of the Religious Education Association may be shared more widely three papers and the reports of four discussion groups are presented in this issue

The first paper needs a special introduction. This is an address which Harrison S. Elliott gave at a banquet which two hundred and fifty of his friends attended in his honor at Christ Church, New York City, on May 1, 1950. This occasion had a two‐fold significance; it was a testimonial to his twenty‐eight years of service at Union Theological Seminary, where he was Professor of Religious Education and Psychology; and it was also in honor of his inauguration into the General Secretaryship of the Religious Education Association. This address was a high point in the Biennial Convention

This article tests the assumption that Horace Bushnell was the father of the religious education movement, despite the fact that at least two generations lapsed between the final edition of his groundbreaking book, Christian Nurture, in 1861 and the formation of the Religious Education Association in 1903. It contends that William Rainey Harper was both the father of the movement and the founder of the Religious Education Association, while Bushnell can be viewed as the “spiritual father” of the movement, with Henry Clay Trumbull as the link between the two. George Albert Coe can be seen as the “dean” of religious educators and a leader of the movement in the first half of the 20th century.  相似文献

One of the groups of professional workers in the International Council of Religious Education is known as the Professors Advisory Section. Most of the members of this Section are also members of the Religious Education Association. At their annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio, held February 11–13, five of these members presented papers on one aspect or another of the contributions of psychology to religious education. They were of such significance that we are happy to publish them here in symposium form.

Christian religious educators in the Religious Education Association are challenged to reclaim their theological nerve and their partnership in public conversations about the educational practices of U.S. society. Beginning with the work of Randolph Crump Miller in the 1950s, this essay traces through the pages of Religious Education the dialogue about the partnership of education and theology. A practical theology of education is offered where the teaching and forming of Christian identity is complemented with a public theological examination of educational practices and meanings in the wider culture.  相似文献

This response to David T. Hansen's 2016 plenary address to the Religious Education Association tests the viability of educational cosmopolitanism for religious education. Using a Deweyan methodology of understanding an idea through its consequences, Hansen's proposal is analyzed using dialogues with interreligious and Islamic pedagogies. The question is asked, Can Islam be cosmopolitan?  相似文献

This article consists of remarks made during a panel at the 2017 annual meeting of the Religious Education Association in St. Louis, MO. From his vantage point as a former law enforcement agent, the author explores issues of ethical dilemmas present in policing; the current situation of militarized police forces; community policing and its origins; and the shooting of a Black young adult, Michael Brown, by a White police officer in Ferguson, MO. Religious educators, clergy, and ethicists can take a hands-on role to encourage justice in policing by discouraging an us/them mentality and advocating for community policing.  相似文献

STILL TO COME
The hundredth anniversary of any organization's founding is an occasion for celebration. At the least, one can celebrate the organization's longevity in surviving for a whole century. The organization has to be doing something right to exist that long. The Religious Education Association has done many good things in its hundred years of existence. These things should be remembered and praised.  相似文献

The article suggests that Religious Education, in practice and as a field, will benefit by exploring the history and practice of Religious Education in the Black church. Using examples from the history, curriculum, and process of Religious Education in the historic Black church, the article argues that the Black church offers a dynamic educational example for religion scholars and religious educators. The importance of reinvigorating Religious Education in the Black church is discussed and recommendations for future practice are made.  相似文献
