Asserting that there is a lack of attention to operationalising and measuring institutional diversity in higher education, this paper attempts to fill the gap. Bearing on the use of the concept of diversity in biology, a model is proposed to conceptualise and measure diversity. The basic principles of three techniques (cluster analysis, ordination techniques, and calculating indices) are set out and examples are given of measurements of the level of diversity of different systems of higher education, such as the Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, Finland and the United Kingdom. 相似文献

Although researchers have examined the potential contribution of harsh parenting to child aggression, they have rarely explored how one parent’s harsh discipline could interact with warmth by another parent to affect child aggression. We sought to clarify whether the impact of harsh parenting by one parent on child effortful control could be buffered by warmth of the other parent, further reducing the likelihood of child aggression. 867 adolescents were chosen from two public middle schools situated in Jinan, the provincial city in Northern China. Data were gathered with adolescents reporting effortful control, their parents reporting harsh parenting, and their classmates nominating aggressive peers. A moderated mediation model was used to test the mediating and moderating hypotheses. Results indicated that adolescent effortful control partially mediated the relation of harsh fathering to adolescent aggression and completely mediated the relation of harsh mothering to adolescent aggression. Moreover, harsh fathering was only negatively associated with effortful control among adolescents with low maternal warmth and harsh mothering was only negatively associated with effortful control among adolescents with low paternal warmth, thus lowering the risk for aggression. The main conclusion is that harsh parenting by one parent could only indirectly impact on adolescent aggression via the mediator of effortful control only for adolescents with low warmth by the other parent. Our findings add to extant understandings on how different parenting practices by both parents may interact to influence children’s aggressive behaviors. 相似文献

The field of workplace learning lacks empirical studies that view workplace practices as places for learning and see these practices in a critical light. Accordingly, the aim of this study is, first, to describe examples of everyday shared practice and consider what kinds of various conflicting aims and demands exist in it. Second, the purpose is to explore what and how it is possible to learn through these shared practices in the area of design and development work. The empirical material consists of ethnographic observations made in two organizations in Finland. Three thematic lines were extracted from field notes and transcribed work talk on the basis of ethnographic and adapted membership categorization analysis. They suggest that the maintenance of a good atmosphere was an important component of shared practice and learning through it. Shared practice was also found to be situated and open‐ended and it contained conflicts and contradictory aims. The findings reported here suggest that to survive, everyday work involves doing and learning, and sometimes disagreeing. Conflicts seem to strengthen a team’s ability to co‐operate and to sustain functional social relations. Attention should thus be paid to the constantly changing processes of work and to situational analyses of the different options within practice provided by the various aims of the work itself and the tasks done in accordance with those aims. 相似文献

Protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitor has become the focus research field as herbicides.Seven novel N-benzoxazolonyluracils were obtained by cyclization of 6-aminobenzoxazolone derivatives with ethyl 3-dimethylcarbamoylamido-4,4,4-trifluorocrotonate and then methylation or amination, and the reaction yields were between 59%-86%. The chemical structures of the compounds were identified by Elemental Analysis, MS and ^1H NMR. Biological results indicate that some compounds exhibit excellent control of broadleaf weeds at post-emergence by low dosage 18.75 ga.i/ha, but are not effective for grass weeds below dosage 37.5 ga. i/ha. In addition, these compounds show no damage at high-dosage 150 ga. i/ha to wheat and corn, but are unsafe to dicotyledonous plants such as cole, soybean and sorghum even at lower dosage 18.75 ga. i/ha. 相似文献

“The Scientific Method” as it has been portrayed in popular and introductory contexts has been declared a myth. The variation that one finds in introductory presentations of “The Scientific Method” is explained by the fact that there is no canonical account among historians and philosophers of science. What, in particular, is wrong with “The Scientific Method”? This essay provides a fairly comprehensive survey of shortcomings of “The Scientific Method”. Included are corrections to several misconceptions that often accompany such presentations. Rather than treating “The Scientific Method” as a useful approximation or an ideal, the myth should be discarded. Lessons can be learned for introductory pedagogical contexts from considering the shortcomings of the myth. 相似文献

I respond to Zeyer and Roth’s (Cultural Studies of Science Education, 2009) paper on their use of interpretive repertoire analysis to explicate Swiss middle school students’ dialogic responses to
environmental issues. I focus on the strategy of interpretive repertoire analysis, making sense of the stance Zeyer and Roth
take with this analysis by synthesizing their argument and comparing their analysis with other researchers that have also
used this analytic tool. Interpretive repertoires are discourse resources, including mores, tropes, and metaphors that can
be evoked by speakers in support of a tenuous claim. So interpretive repertoires have rhetorical character and function. Interpretive
repertoire analysis requires looking for patterns in the contradictions in the speech of a collective of participants that
can be codified as interpretive repertoires. Interpretive repertoires provide insight into macro-structures that frame, and
are used to justify participants’ behavior. My response to Zeyer and Roth’s argument might also be thought to be contradictory
but I think defensible. In this paper, I outline why I am excited by the possibilities I can image for this type of analysis
in areas of science education research. However, I also felt the need to identify possible limitations of Zeyer and Roth’s
exclusive focus on environmental issues to the neglect of other issues, such as those associated with gender, embedded in
participants’ discourse. I argue that a critical and historical focus, in conjunction with interpretive repertoire analysis,
offer a rich strategy for analysis in science education research, especially in the study of macrostructures, such as gender,

A particular approach to epistemological action as ‘critical praxis’ is proposed where we bring together the ideas of ideology critique, self-reflective consciousness and emancipatory action. Critical praxis for educators seeks to move beyond the constraints of formal teaching, knowledge and curriculum and instead encourages communities, teachers and students to work together in producing new understandings and practices for the public good. As teacher educators, we are attempting to design a research methodology that will enable our field of practice to be theorised and to encourage a movement towards new critical understandings of teaching and learning for our students and for ourselves. This is a process of reflexive practice that endeavours to constantly and systematically interrogate our own views and to move beyond the status quo of conservative educational systems, procedures and rigidities so that knowledge is a legitimate investigation of possibility and transformation. In this article, we report a Critical Praxis Protocol to guide further development of teacher education and research. We trace our trajectory from a progressive emphasis on improving learning and professional educational practice to an emerging notion of criticality that seeks explanation with the theorising of Bourdieu. A draft habitus–field analysis is provided to indicate our current understanding of generative themes that suggest the emancipatory potential of teaching and schooling. 相似文献

The aim of this paper was to explore whether there is a gender difference in the beneficial effects of Racing Academy, which
is a video game used to support undergraduate students learning of Mechanical Engineering. One hundred and thirty-eight undergraduate
students (15 females and 123 males) participated in the study. The students completed a pre-test a week before they started
using Racing Academy. The pre-test consisted of a test of students’ knowledge of engineering, and a measure of students’ motivation
towards studying engineering. A week after using Racing Academy the students completed a post-test which was identical to
the pre-test, except it also included a measure of how frequently they used Racing Academy and how motivating the students
found playing Racing Academy. We found that after playing Racing Academy the students learnt more about engineering and there
was no gender difference in the beneficial effect of Racing Academy, however there is some evidence that, female students
found Racing Academy more motivating than male students. The implications for the use and design of video games for supporting

Our argument concerning the debate around the process of ‘conceptual change’ is that it is both an evolutionary learning process and a revolutionary paradigm change. To gain a deeper understanding of the process, the article focuses on the discourse of educational facilitators participating in a community of learners. Applying the methodology of ‘Semiotic Evolution,’ the micro‐process of learning within the group was traced. Analysis of the interaction between individual learning and group learning within the discourse enabled us to postulate a hypothetical three‐stage model of the process. The model indicates that conceptual change is an experiential change rather than a cognitive one, an intentional change of identity, a change of the person's relationship with the world. 相似文献
