The creation of the Internet Public Library Reference Division is presented in the historical context of librarians' efforts to integrate the use of technologies with reference services. The article examines ways that librarians have successfully incorporated new technologies, and makes recommendations about how these strategies can be applied to the Reference Division and to Internet usage for the reference process in general.  相似文献

This paper examines the efforts of the McGill University Humanities and Social Sciences Library Reference staff to integrate the use of resources found on the hernet with traditional reference duties. It also discusses the Internet instruction workshops designed and implemented by reference staff to help librarians and the university community understand and navigate the Internet. The relationship with McGill's Computing Centre and Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology is examined and a case is made for increased collaboration with other areas concerning Internet instruction and use. Lastly, the proactive role of reference staff concerning the introduction of the Internet to other library staff and to the university community is also discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Fulfilling the “promise inherent in the student workforce” (Burrows 1995, 85) must be a collaborative effort involving the Library administration, Circulation staff, Reference librarians, and the students themselves. Advances in library technologies have dramatically changed the way that libraries do business. Just as access to Internet resources has widened the sphere of the Reference librarian, automation has expanded the role of the Circulation desk assistant in filling the information needs of library users. Library policy and training of student desk assistants must reflect the evolving electronic environment.  相似文献

This paper offers an inventory of Internet resources on the history of medicine. Some sites are bibliographic; they supply book and journal citations. Some provide leads (or links) to more specific information, and some include full-text articles or historical essays. Because this material is intended to furnish librarians with reference direction, more attention is given to bibliographic and "linked" sites. This paper updates a previous version published in Medical Reference Services Quarterly in Spring 1998.  相似文献

Reference service has existed in public and academic libraries for over one hundred years, but as libraries move into an age of increasing technology, many traditional methods for providing reference service will no longer be adequate. By examinmg reference services of the past and present, reference librarians can learn from the mistakes and successes of their predecessors to better plan for the future. Reference librarians must be committed to retaining the most successful ideas from the past and giving up the least successful. This critical examination of past services must also be coupled with a visionary and risk-taking outlook for what is needed in the future if reference librarians are to remain a vital part of the information age.  相似文献

A survey of UK postgraduate centres during September 1997 found that almost 60% were connected to the Internet, but librarians were still the largest user group, few had more than one access point and support to users was limited. Significant progress was made during the following 18 months—by April 1999 all but one of the remaining sites had Internet access in either the postgraduate centre or in a separate library. Lack of funds and decisive policy were stated to be the most common reasons for delay in connecting. The Internet was rated highly as source of the latest research information and support for evidence-based medicine and continuing education. Expansion of the role of librarians to include assistance with sophisticated searches seemed a logical move to the majority, yet the survey suggests that a significant investment in time and money will be required to support the use of the Internet in continuing medical education in the broadest sense. It is likely that the traditional boundaries between IT departments, libraries and user groups will need to be redrawn if the technology is to be exploited effectively.  相似文献

The dramatic increase in the use of the global network is examined through statistics and examples of the involvement of many countries. Despite the explosive growth of Internet use and contrary to the increasingly frequent characterization of the Internet as global, gaps are identified in the international coverage of the network. Evidence of the participation of librarians in the global network is sought through an analysis of subscriber lists for selected library-related listservs. Findings show that representation of librarians from a few countries is very high, while representation of librarians from most countries is low or non-existent. The value of the Internet and the potential role librarians can plan in this evolving environment are discussed.  相似文献

The author describes the collections, roles, and services of the Reference Section of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress. He suggests that there is an audience among reference librarians for the publications produced by the NLS Reference Section. The reference librarians of the NLS network of regional and subregional libraries serving visually impaired and physically disabled readers are, of course, a primary audience for NLS reference publications. However, all items may be used as well by other librarians serving visually impaired and physically disabled people, the majority of whom undoubtedly work in public libraries. The author argues that as reference tools these publications may be used to answer quite specific inquiries and to make sound referrals on a wide range of questions. Librarians may request individual titles or have their libraries placed on a mailing list for any of the cited series.  相似文献

Holistic medicine and therapeutic systems are increasingly popular health care alternatives. Reference librarians, when asked about subjects pertaining to the vast field of holistic health, have found the bibliographic resources to be obscure, confusing, and inconsistent. The first two sections of this article discuss the subject access that is provided by Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine subject headings. In the final section there is an annotated bibliography of the chief reference sources for the field. Reference librarians are encouraged to work through the difficulties of finding answers in this field and to treat such queries as typical consumer health care questions.  相似文献

Penfield Library at SUNY Oswego is in its fourth year of an innovative program to bring cultural diversity to its reference services. Jointly sponsored by the Library and the Office of Learning Support Services, the Library Reference Assistant (LRA) Program recruits and instructs students of color and non-traditional students in assesting librarians at the Reference Desk. Involving these students in the process of providing reference services makes a strong statement about our confidence in their ability to succeed and to serve as role models for non-traditional students and students of color. The sucess of the LRA Program has required a strong commitment on the part of both librarians and student participants in the development and implementation of this program. The LRA Program is serving as a model for similar programs in other SUNY libraries.  相似文献

Abstract

Organizing and evaluating information available to library patrons on the Internet is a constant challenge for librarians. Academic health sciences librarians faced this challenge in an innovative and collaborative way when trying to organize and evaluate web sites providing medical information. Their project, called HealthWeb, can serve both as a prototype for public librarians trying to organize sites in other subject areas, and as a resource for patrons looking for high quality medical information available on the Internet.  相似文献

The nature of music collections and their use means that patrons have always required specialized guidance from librarians to access what they need. Currently, library patrons' expectations are growing as collections and their delivery modes evolve. Music reference services must adapt to effectively address these needs. This article examines the challenges to delivering effective music reference service, the basics of reference assessment, and how assessment models such LibQual+, the Wisconsin-Ohio Reference Evaluation Program, and the Reference Effort Assessment Data Scale can help librarians build patron-centered music reference services.  相似文献

In recent years, reference librarians have properly accorded online and CD-ROM services much attention. But the first, simplest, and often most effective telecommunications tool available to reference librarians is the familiar telephone. Unfortunately, many reference librarians do not fully utilize the great potential of the telephone as an information-gathering tool either because they lack long-distance calling capability or are reluctant to use it. Reference librarians lacking the long-distance connection are urged to work toward making it available. Examples of how the telephone can be used to expand the reference librarian's reach are provided.  相似文献

Summary

For the past twenty-five years, the Slavic Reference Service has been providing specialized bibliographic and information reference service to the community of students, scholars, and librarians in the field of Slavic Studies. This service includes the verification, location, and acquisition of rare monographs and serials, and answering both ready-reference and in-depth research questions. The Internet and e-mail have provided a new medium by which we are able to expand our services both to our traditional community of users in the Slavic field, and also to the general public. The expansion of our services has cause us to reconsider our methods of providing reference service in a virtual reference environment.  相似文献

The future will be one of change driven by technology and information. Reference librarians are finding themselves in the forefront as information specialists committed to service to their users. With clients beginning to view librarians as essential professionals, there is a tremendous opportunity to combine well-designed services with the new technology and move into the role of assisting people to solve information problems. Successful programs will be centered around a user-oriented climate and provide access to a wide variety of information and technologies.  相似文献

The Brooklyn College Library's Reference Unit developed the Library's Online Orientation Program (LOOP) to provide freshman students with an entirely online, independent, flexible, and self-paced introduction to the library's resources and services. The implementation of the LOOP gave the reference librarians much-needed time to focus their teaching on classes that require research. The LOOP includes an assessment component that was created and is managed using Sakai. Sakai was found to be effective in creating and managing the assessment, with minimal ongoing maintenance required. Reference librarians with serious time constraints can look to this model as an alternative to in-person library orientation sessions. Since very little has been written about the use of Sakai as a means of creating and managing online assessment, its benefits and drawbacks are outlined.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Reference librarians, specifically those working in academic health sciences environments, have expanded their roles and taken on new and unique responsibilities. While librarians at The George Washington University’s Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library continue to provide traditional reference services, they have gone beyond their comfort zone in many cases to become involved in activities that are outside of the librarian’s established role. This article describes the current roles of Himmelfarb’s reference librarians, as well as the way these librarians prepared for these roles and addressed the associated challenges.  相似文献

Reference librarians are persons who deal with users directly, providing services which cover a wide range of subjects and formals. Sometimes these librarians have subject expertise or are strong in certain areas. Serials librarians are also providing services to users but the nature of their contribution is sometimes overlooked, often misunderstood. The serials librarian can provide a useful link to the world of periodicals, journals, directories and other reference sources because he or she is familiar with the types of materials available, the treatment of serials, and the problems which are posed by this format's complexity. This paper presents the role of the serials librarian not only as a technical services professional, but also as a valuable associate to reference and public services. The main purpose of this discussion is to describe ways in which both reference and serials librarians can work together toward the ultimate goal of providing quality patron service.  相似文献
